Trigger Thumb surgery

Recommended Posts

After having carpal tunnel surgery on both hands I now have "trigger thumb" on the right hand. So far cortisone shots not doing much. Have you had the surgery and what was the long term outcome? I've been told to expect to lose some grip strength and dexterity.

Thanks

Paul

Hey Paul,

I have had Carpal Tunnel release in both hands and a follow up on the right hand for Median Nerve damage from the first surgery. (Changed Doctors for the second surgery)

I am seeing my hand surgeon Tuesday 02-17 to have the new problem of trigger thumb right hand checked. I am on crutches from other surgeries (Been a tough 26 months) and figured the trigger thumb was caused by the crutch grip.

I am hoping injections will solve the problem. I will be watching this topic and will update when I have more news.

Saw my surgeon yesterday. I have the start of trigger finger on left ring finger where I had a dupuytren's nodule removed in 2012 and severe trigger thumb right thumb. He injected both which he said is the normal course of action.

I got immediate relief in the finger. Today was the first day I didn't have to pry it straight when I woke up. Thumb is better but still not great. Will see him again in 3 weeks.

To give you some insight on the surgeon I see here is a link to his MGH page.

Read the biography.

Had surgical release for trigger thumb last July. Surgery was a hoot. Minimal post-op pain. I have full ROM and it is now one of the few fingers on my hands that doesn't annoy me one way or another. I've got an index finger that is heading towards the procedure next and frankly kind of wish it would get bad enough soon so I can get rid of the locking and pain I have now. Totally recommend the procedure.

World famous. One of the best there is. Taught the one who taught me.

Plus he looked over the Xrays from my Ankle Fusion done 12-12 and we talked that over. Real nice guy

Saw the doc Friday. Got the second cortisone shot. Not much relief from this one. Called a PT friend and discussed with her. She said that her experience with it is the the shots work maybe 50-60 % and the rest get the cut. In her view no downside to the surgery so while I will be trying the stretches and massage I anticipate getting cut sometime after March 15.

Update: Three weeks after second cortisone shot pain and knot on tendon both almost gone. Doing cross fiber friction massage three times a week per a friend who is a OT hand specialist. See the doc next Friday.

  • 2 weeks later...

1 week post surgery tomorrow. Trigger thumb right hand feels better than it has in a long time. Even with stitches, I am able to work on my grip.

Trigger finger left hand is a little sore in the knuckle but I keep stretching the hand and it gets better every day.

Very glad I had this done.

Good to hear. Try gripping some booty and see if you can hang on to it. ;)

Are you trying to live vicariously through me?

No thanks.I got enough trouble living through me. :)
