dauntedfuture
My nearly new Springfield loaded 9mm 1911 is having problems. Material is being shaved from the back of the primer and its blocking the firing pin. It's consistent after 6-7 rds or so. Factory and mild hand loaded ammo. You can't see firing pin indentation on back of primers, it's filled with material. Help please. Edited March 5, 2014 by dauntedfuture
yoshidaex
An extended length firing pin may help with the issue you're having but if you're using factory loads or minor pf hand loads, there might be other issues causing that primer "wipe". On a related note, confirm the opening of your firing pin hole. Springfield firing pin hole size might be different compared to other manufacturers. Steve RA
Sounds as though it may be unlocking early.
bountyhunter
Check the firing pin hole in the breech face and verify that it is "radiused" out gradually, not a sharp edged hole drilled through.
dauntedfuture
It's got a nice sharp edge.
Kingman
Look up peening firing pin hole.
pskys2
What loads are you using, one issue would be over pressure rounds, unlocking early, FP hole too large/sharp.
jimbullet
Are your loads "hot"? Sounds like primer flow. An extended firing pin will solve this
dauntedfuture
its not ammo. factory and hand loads that bearley make PF; SOLO 1000 and 147 FMJ.
yoshidaex
Sounds like a early unlocking situation. What recoil spring and main spring do you have installed in the gun?
dauntedfuture
Its the factory recoil spring, what ever that is and its not overly light or worn out, and i believe that i put in a 12 or 14 lb mainspring. yoshidaex
12/14 lbs mainspring sounds a bit light. Have you tried using the original mainspring and confirming if the primer wipe is still there?
Steve RA
Do the cases appear to have scratches on the case head and is there sort of a trough going outward from the firing pin strike mark?? That light a mainspring is probably allowing for early unlocking which would wipe the case head across the firing pin hole. As pointed out above, put the stock mainspring back in and give it a try. Then post what happened.
bountyhunter
It's got a nice sharp edge. That's what shears off the riased portion of primer leading to the wiped look.
ebg3
Hammer spring or main spring should not be 12/14lb(too light). Try a 17lb hammer/main spring. An extended firing pin will reduce primer flow.
dauntedfuture
Thanks for all the help. I called and talked with springfield and i sent the gun back to them. I have not experienced anything like this in my other 9mm,.40, .45 or .38 super 1911/2011 guns in the past. I wonder if they might have drilled a .45 firing pin hole and not the propper 9/38 super for the firing pin.
