  1. I am a big John Wayne fan and I hate to pay theater admission prices but I am going to have to see this one in the theater since I can't wait for it to hit dvd. I was at the mall shopping this past weekend and saw that "The Mechanic" is coming out in January. That was a fantastic Bronson movie with Jan MichaelVincent as his young protege. I see that jason Statham is starring so there should be plenty of action! I guess remakes are hot again!
  2. Thank you for the information. Sorry to be so long replying, a lot of travelling for work lately. I can completely understand collecting sales on new items shipped in via internet sales to keep local retailers on equal footing, but taxing a private citizen to private citizen sale definitely seems unconstitutional to me!!!
  3. While it is true that the Shadow is a production gun I think that most people on this forum probably had in mind the Shadow Custom, which also comes from the boys at the Custom Shop. The target has adjustable sights and different grips when compared to the Shadow Custom.
  4. I have recently moved to Washington state I visited a local gunstore to see about their receiving a transfer of a firearm from an FFL in another state. (of course it was an item from BE forum) The store told me that they would have to charge me WA sales tax. Is that correct? I am buying it from a private party and have never paid tax before in two previous states. Assistance from any Washingtonians is appreciated. Larry
  5. I think the same guys you are hearing about XD problems from are the ones that will tell you that you need at least a Les Bauer or Nighthawk 1911, in the $2k range. The idea that a "plastic" gun can cost $500 and run reliably must hurt their pride. My XD40 tactical has put about 12k rounds downrange with the only failures being one extraction failure when I was experimenting with bunny fart loads and had not changed the spring. After I got the power factor back in the legal range it has not had a single issue since. I did have one mag failure. I dropped it in the parking lot and did not see it until after I had backed over it. It still feeds well but the bent edge does not let it drop free. If you buy a 9mm tactical and do not like it let me know when you are ready to sell it!
  6. Remember the old adage "If it sounds too good to be true it probably isn't true." Unquestionably the best way to deal with ethanol in small engine fuel is to use it within 60 days of mixing it. If it is still in your fuel can simply dump it in your car or truck and mix fresh fuel. The cost of mixing fresh fuel is much less than a new fuel system or upper end. Ethanol is being blamed for many ills is all types of off road engines. I think you might find that much of the issue stems from the myriad of other chemicals added to the fuel today. (I say fuel because I refuse to call the crap we get from the pump now gas) If a product makes incredible claims why don't they back it up with test data from an independant testing company? Ethanol has been in the fuel in many parts of the country for well over ten years. If it is at the current legal limit of 10% it should not cause an significant issues. If you have a boat with a large built in fuel tank I would consult the manufacturers website for information on long term storage. I have seen many local dealers for all sorts of brand giving some wild advice that is based on "I heard" rather than anything factual.
  7. You will be glad you bought the Hustler rather than the Husqvarna. Hustler builds commercial/industrial mowers primarily. You just bought their introductory model but the quality of construction is there. Husqvarna is the company that builds Sears mowers up to this year when they lost the contract. To the gentleman that asked about the Deere LA135 I just bought one this spring to mow the lawn area around our property. It is great. Plenty of power, easy for the wife to use when I am out of town. It is not a commercial machine like the Hustler but in the under $2000 range it is quite nice. The big difference between a high quality machine and the low end brands like Murray and MTD is the quality of cut, especially when the grass is high.
  8. Thanks for that reminder. I am glad you are recovering. I had a kaboom in a .40 and the thought of what could have happened scared me considerably. It does make you slow down and consider things more.
  9. We took a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon from Vegas last March. It was fantastic. You see the "strip" from the air, Hoover dam, Lake Las Vegas, and of course the canyon from a lot of angles. We had a champagne and snacks when we landed in the canyon. The name of the tour company was Maverick. They take off from McCarren airport. (It was strange to hover along the taxi way lift off at the end of the runway) It was an unforgettable time for my wife and I.
  10. Is yours the Performance Center 38Super or the production .45? I like the looks of the gun and think the features for the dollar are nice. I really like the Performance Center version but if I read the rules correctly it would have to score minor in SS. I want to shoot major.
  11. My condolences on the passing of your father. It is never easy to accept. My father passed three years ago and I still feel like picking up the phone and calling him.
  12. What a pain in the A.. to have to make my house look like no one lives in it every day! Pay top dollar to have some one "stage" it so it does not look your your own house anymore.
  13. It is certainly a movie that will please the masses. Enough football to hold the guys attention but almost a chick flick storyline. I had no idea it was based on a true story when I went to see it. I will definitely own this one when it comes out on DVD.
  14. Just because a young kid appears to be able to do something does not mean they are mature enough to be handle things if something goes wrong. I think the real model for this would be NASCAR. Even they, will not allow drivers that are too young to compete just because they can reach the controls and make it around the course without hitting a wall. I have four kids, all in their 20's now, that I taught to shoot and they all love pistols in particular, but they progressed up from bb guns, to single shots, to .22's, to centerfire at ages where they were more responsible. He is not even old enough to buy bb's legally in most states!
  15. Yep! It does not get much better than surfing BE while watching NASCAR! Go Mark Martin!
  16. I am going to have to tape some glasses and try this. It is certainly less expensive than going to Open! It was amazing to me how quickly my focal ability went in the past two years. Fiber optic front helped a lot but the time it takes me to refocus is killing me.
  17. I really appreciate all of the info and pics. I knew there would be a lot of great ideas out there and I prefer to borrow ideas rather than come up with my own. One more question which I know will be very subjective since not too many people have more than one gun safe, but is there any brand to really stay away from? I love the pistol hangers on the door so durable metal there would be a big plus.
  18. If you are near Hamburg be sure to set some time aside for a boat cruise on the canals. More canals than Venice and the city was not destroyed in the war so there is still a lot of history. I thought that the remains of the Berlin wall were still pretty moving. The Brandenburg gate will stir a lot of memories. A sign of the times was that the last time we were there (two years ago) the young tour guide was more interested in pointing out the hotel balcony where Michael Jackson dangled his baby than the Freedom Arch.
  19. I searched several ways but did not find a thread on this. I would love to see photo's of the inside of your gun safe. Particularly how you are organizing your pistols to take maximum advantage of space. I am about to buy a safe and want to make sure I get on large enough to hold everything (plus a few more in the future of course!) I have seen some safes that have a lot of pouches on the door similar to a shoe rack but I know some of you clever guys have probably come up with some ingenious home methods.
  20. My first real gun would be a Montgomery Wards bolt action .410 shotgun given to me by my uncle. I still have it. I have taught 4 kids to shoot with it. I was in 7th grade so I was either 12 or 13. I made a dent in the squirrel population for a while and was able to pay for shells shooting pigeons on a friends great aunts farm.
  21. I just took 60 people to Cabo in December. It was a great place! Much safer than anywhere else in Mexico, and cleaner. We stayed at the Crowne Plaza, just 200 yds up the street from the Intercontinental Seth mentioned. I had gone down there last January to check out hotels. We chose Cabo San Jose because you can get a very nice all-inclusive hotel for much less than in Cabo San Lucas. During the day you are probably going to hang out at the pool or on the beach anyway so where you are does not really make a difference. We saw whales right off the beach in front of the hotel. That does not happen in Cabo San Lucas because you are in a harbor rather than the Sea of Cortez. For night life you have to go to Cabo Wabo and the Giggling Marlin. Night life doesn't start until at least 11PM. Really dangerous rip tides in most places so no real swimming off most beaches. Jet skis are available at most hotels. Good off-road adventures on ATV's or actual Baja Race Buggies if you are so inclined. The biggest lure to Cabo for sports is Marlin fishing. Book that at that marina to save a few bucks. Remember you really should haggle with everyone in Mexico. The village in Cabo San Jose is a neat place to walk around with many nice jewelers and restaraunts and it is more like a real village rather than a resort town that depends on the cruise ship business like Cabo San Lucas. Oh, did mention the Crowne Plaza is an all-inclusive so when you lay by the pool and suck down Pacifico's they are free!! I will be going back on my own dime for sure! P.S.- Just say no to the time share hawkers. They are very aggressive.
  22. It is easy to fool yourself into "needing" a 650. I started with a 450, upgraded it to a 550, then sold it and got a 650 with case feeder, powder check, etc. I just sold it and I am going back to a 550. The 650 is a bit faster, but like many others have said I tend to load a few hundred rounds at a time rather than thousands. I think the 550 "keeps my head in the game" better, which is a good thing when reloading. I also want to inspect each piece of brass again as I place it on the reloader. I had a case head seperation and don't want another one! Ever! Loading the hopper takes that step out of the process. I think that there is something to be said for the simplicity of design of the 550 and the compact space it requires.
  23. I am moving out there soon and was just out there checking things out. If you go to Pikes Place market you have to visit the original Starbuck's of course, but almost as high on my list would be the cheese shop about 3 doors down from Starbucks. I forget the name but you will not miss it. Always very busy. They make cheese on premise. I will be a regular when I get out there. They make a lot of exotic cheeses. They had a Jamaican herb cheese that I loved! You should also go to Iver's for Salmon. Go to the original restaraunt, not one in a mall or the airport. Get the sampler platter with three types of Salmon on it. I am a dedicated carnivore but I would put two of those pieces of fish up against most filets I have had! I did not get time to check out any gun stores. (my wife was with me)
  24. It would have to be something manly like a sander to explain a vibrator in the reloading room! My wife already wonders why I spend so much time down there!
  25. Wow! That was a lot of information in a short time! Thank you to everyone for all of the help. I do plan to live on the high ground in the trees.
