  1. To open the division up to as many guns and competitors as possible without feeling they need to kit up with a race gun. I'm especially thinking of compact guns and states where 10-rd mags are the limit. Also, some guns only come with 10-rders stock (my CZ75, or KT P11 for example) even though higher capacity mags will fit.
  2. Thanks everyone for the quick reply. I left a message for Chris. If he doesn't answer in a day or two or is out of stock, I'll probably go for the gunbroker one. Edit: Chris is out of stock, supposedly being shipped 5 in January but he has a waiting list of 7 people so far Reedsammo is out of stock too. I just bought the gunbroker one! No answer at Gundealeronline and gunbroker was just a few bucks more anyhow. sinnsyk: once it's on the way you can expect a big parts/mag order from me. Offer any discounts for benos or uspsa members?
  3. Anyone know where I can buy an EAA Elite Limited in .40? I'd love to have one, and I got the bucks, I just can't find anyone with one in stock
  4. If you want to see if a tungsten guide rod helps, couldn't you just temporarily fasten 1.5oz of weight to the front of the gun and see how it behaves? How you fasten it, I dunno -- duct tape? Use one of the scope mount holes and a jerry-rigged bracket?
  5. So on these "land mine" type of stages, how does the RO get through without interfering with the props? I've thought of doing a stage like this, but I can't figure this part out. As an RO, I wouldn't want to have to be focusing on my feet -- I'm supposed to be watching the competitor and his gun.
  6. Just for comparison, at the same Area 1 match I chrono'd 176.7PF w/ 4.4gr of TG, 1.135 OAL and 180gr Rainiers out of a USP Expert (polygonal barrel). The same load chrono'd at 174PF at nationals last year. My chrono shows 170-174PF depending on the temperature. I can go down to 4.2gr and still make major, but there's not much, if any, fudge factor left.
  7. Last month I had surgery to fix tennis elbow in my weak arm that I've been battling for 2-3 years. It was most likely repetetive strain from work (typing), and the problem preceeds my getting seriously involved in shooting competetively. Anyhow, if anyone has had this surgery done, how long before you were up and shooting again--both practice and competing again at close to your prior level? Thanks. Tom
  8. Browning Hi-power recoil springs work on the Cz75, got that tip off of czforum.com. I have a BHP reduced power progressive spring in my 75b and it works great. It's a 75b in .40SW that came wit a factory metal guide rod, not sure if that matters but it dropped right in with no mods. It's actually easier to reassemble now, and easier for my wife to work the slide.
  9. I hope you get better soon. I'm also down for the count, elbow surgery on weak arm 2 weeks ago for chronic tennis elbow (been figting it 3 years). I'm one handed for 2 more weeks, so I can't even reload. Probably won't be shooting again until at least Feb. The good news is that I purposefully waited until the season was winding down.
  10. Nice find on the gun! I live 3 blocks from NW Pawn and visit it regularly. This one slipped by me since i've been out of town.
  11. The rules say you have to use the same ammo for the whole match, so changing calibers is a no-go. By the rules you can't even bump him up to Open. In a local match I would let him continue to shoot and even score him so he can see his comparative standings, but he would not be eligible for prizes/awards and we wouldn't send in his classifier score. I may even put a note on the posted match results noting as such so his peers know that comparing scores with him may not be equivalent for this match. The way I see it, he paid his money and wants to have his fun. It's not a safety issue, so let him shoot but not as part of USPSA.
  12. I tried a few 165gr loads in a carbine (a Kel-Tec Sub2000 if it matters). 7.5gr: 1321fps 7.8gr: 1347fps (also got 1147 out of a 5" bbl if you're curious) Loaded to 1.135 OAL Heavy recoil, even in the carbine. Lots of muzzle flash in the 5" bbl gun. I haven't shot the carbine at night or indoors so I can't say how the flash is with that. No signs of overpressure, although Hodgdon has reduced their recommended max load to 7.5: http://www.hodgdon.com/data/pistol/longshot/40sw.htm
  13. A pic is worth a thousand words (or about a thousand bullets in this case): $3 in the pet section at Fred Meyer's.
  14. I have an injury to my weak arm which makes it impossible to hold up a gun weak hand only, I just don't have the strength to grip it or lift it reliabily (by reliabily I mean there's a >50% chance of dropping it if I try). Watching me shoot freestyle you may not notice this, it still works well enough to help direct my strong hand and to reload with. If I were to shoot a classifier which requires weak-hand only and I chose not to, what would the penalty be? In the past, I just shot freestyle and RO's have given me a procedural for each shot and I just took it, since a hit and a procedural are better than a mike or dropping the gun and getting a DQ, but I just noticed the following rule: 10.2.11 Special penalty: A competitor unable to fully execute any part of a course of fire due to incapacity or injury may, prior to making his attempt at the course of fire, request that the Range Master apply a penalty in lieu of the stated course requirement. 10.2.11.1 If the request is approved by the Range Master, a minimum of one procedural penalty, up to a maximum penalty of 20% of the competitor’s points “as shot” (rounded up to the nearest whole number), will be deducted from the competitor’s score. For example, if 100 points are available in the course of fire and the competitor actually scores 90 points, the special penalty is a deduction of 18 points.
  15. My EGW die came in a Lee box with Lee instructions. My guess is that EGW has Lee make them. I had to adjust the expander on my powder drop (using Hornady's powder-through-expander built-in) to put a hair more of a bell on the case to reliably get the bullets in without scraping off the plating (Rainiers), and then readjusted the taper crip die to .420-.421, enough so that a pulled bullet just barely doesn't show any signs of deformation from the crimp. I fired some of the EGW-U created rounds yesterday at a match. Nothing like trial-by-fire No problems. I think I'll be sticking with it. I am concerned that the extra amount of resizing and flaring will shorten the life of my brass, but I'll keep an eye on it. Generally my brass gets lost before it wears out
  16. I agree about my HK, it's never had a problem with ANY ammo that I've ever thrown at it. However, my wife is going to start shooting USPSA too using my CZ-75b (which I think is now HER gun, she likes it that much), which might be a different story. I also have an income-challenged good friend who shoots an XD and I frequently toss some of my reloads his way. I'd like my ammo specs as close to industry standards as possible since I use it in multiple guns. I use the Hornady taper crimp die (LNL-AP press) too. I had a lee FCD on an older press and the Hornady taper crimp works just as well.
  17. That's good to know about the hourglass shape being a "good thing", thanks everyone for the info. I believe I'll keep using the U die.
  18. Another +1 for Titegroup. Economical, consistent, not very temperature sensitive, soft shooting... 4.4gr w/ 180gr Rainiers at 1.135 make 172PF in my USP Expert. It is a little sooty, but not smoky at all when fired. The soot wipes right off, I really don't find it to be a concern at all and IMO the issue is overstated.
  19. I buy a lot of (almost exclusively) once-fired .40 brass for my loads, and most of it has been "Glocked". After reading about the EGW Undersized die here I thought it sounded like a good idea and a reasonable precaution, even though my USP has never had a problem yet with any of my reloads (a couple thousand using Hornady dies). What I found is that the rounds with the EGW U die come out a little undersized, even slightly hourglass shaped. I measured a bunch of cases and found the measurements to be pretty consistent. Which of the two scenarios do you think is preferable? EGW-U Hornady Crimp .420 .420 Mid .415 .420 Base .420 .423
  20. From what I've found the sporting good store type of pads require you to take your shoes off. If you want quick on/off pads, try some meant for construction from Sears or Harbor Freight or somewhere like that.
  21. FYI, This exact question is in the latest Front Sight. Answer given is exactly as posted here.
  22. I hate waking up to pee 20 minutes before my alarm is set to go off. Grr.
  23. Yup. And no real pattern to them, unless you count the 180's on stage 7, where the stage design tempted right-handed shooters to reload while moving to the left. I noticed that there were 3 or 4 "oh crap!" DQs in the mix, too. 3 people got the sequence wrong on "turn, then draw...", and one person apparently didn't drop the mag before showing clear, resulting in a "bang" on "if clear, hammer down..." ymmv B The RO on stage 10 mentioned that he had one DQ because the shooter did his LAMR facing uprange (start position). I had a good bit of downtime to talk to him after one of the poppers broke clean off at the base for me. I saw one DQ the first day where he thought he unloaded and showed clear and it wasn't---bang. I almost DQ'd on the roundhouse by breaking the 180 reloading, and I intentionally went left to right to avoid that. Stupid diagonal 180 line... Much later another RO wanted to DQ me because of finger in the trigger while reloading, until the assistant RO assured him that yes, an HK mag release is really on the trigger guard and since I was releasing it with my trigger finger it was impossible for my finger to be on the trigger.
  24. One of the guys on the Open super squad did cheerleader type splits I don't know 'em well enough to say who it was by name. Another went left leg forward kneeling on right, so did the young lady on our squad. I had a fun time. I agree that Roundhouse Redoubt can die a burning painful death. I had a major senior moment on stage 18 (the classifier). I stopped and reholstered after the reload, thinking it was two strings. I did better than I thought I would, placing about in the middle of the L10 C pack. Since I'm a D shooter that just got classified as a C (by 0.25%) due to one freakishly lucky classifier.
  25. So what's up with stage 1? It looks to me like there are tunnels to crawl through with a fault line at the mouth of the tunnel--so that you can't get out and it also looks like you couldn't see the targets from there?
