  1. What length are you reloading to? It depends on the bullet. The shortest is 1.07" for some TC's up to 1.16" for some RN's. Then I have about 0.015" clearance between bullet profile and leading. I determine max OAL by using a casing with a cut mouth and inserting a bullet in it. Then I check at what length it turns freely in the chamber and subtract 0.015".
  2. Thanks for that. He should know what he's talking about. Seems I'll have to live with the short freebore and OALs.
  3. On my Tanfo, like many others, I have to load quite short. Shorter than I like, would like to be able to load 0.02-0.04" (0.5-1.0 mm) longer. How hard is it to ream the throat? Can I do it myself with hand tools, or is a lathe a requirement? What is needed?
  4. I've tried both Henning and the Xtreme FO front sight. I actually prefer the Xtreme. I have no trouble seeing either, both light up fine. However, the Xtreme has longer sight radius (7 mm) and better fit.
  5. Nice photo! They really look great with the black Xtreme grips. Just wish my hands liked them better.
  6. I don't think you can modify grip panels and still be production legal Yes you can IPSC Production: No sanding or modifications to grips allowed, aftermarket grips are OK if they are unmodified. Grip tape is OK.
  7. Could be a lot of reasons. High primers, too hard primers, firing pin block friction against the firing ping, ammo not passing plunk test, too short firing pin... I'd check the ammo first if they are reloads, then the gun. I'd buy the Xtreme firing pin as the first thing for the gun if I didn't have it already.
  8. Option 1 seems a better deal, but not by a lot. I'd go with what finish I liked the best since that's the most significant difference.
  9. Good news for small frame owners! I asked, and Henning has a small frame version of the contour grips in the pipe for 2016. :-) I suppose the more people that ask for them, the quicker they will be available.
  10. OAL is depending on what kind of bullet is used. Without specifying a bullet, is there a point to the poll?
  11. Choice of oil and cleaning has a big effect too. Cleaning all the moving parts with brake cleaner and using thin aerosol oil increases trigger weight a lot. Using moly paste/grease gives a buttery smooth pull and the lightest pull, but on the expense of the crispiness when SA breaks. I've noticed the weight decreases as the gun gets dirty, I think the carbon remains from burnt gunpowder reduces the weight as it binds to the oil/grease. Cleaning the gun and using a thin oil before competition with a minimum trigger weight test is a good way to avoid DQ, in my experience. I'm looking into making more positive sear engagement as Nealio proposed. That would make it possible to have the lightest DA setup and still qualify for SA minimum weight.
  12. I've noticed the same thing, Tanfo parts being pricier than CZ parts. On the other hand, slide stop failure seems much more rare on Tanfoglios whereas every CZ 75/85 owner should keep one spare all the time for when, not if, it breaks.
  13. Primer seat depth is also a possible culprit.
  14. The jury is is still out, I think. The rule does say "profile and contours", not just "contours", Appendix D4, 17.3, IPSC rules for Handgun (Jan 2015): "Aftermarket grip panels which match the profile and contours of the OFM standard or optional grip panels for the approved handgun and/or the application of tape on grips (see Appendix E3a) are permitted. However, rubber sleeves are prohibited." I asked a IPSC Production shooter, and he had made a cut-out in factory grips. He claimed it was legal and he had competed with those grips without problems. I then mailed the question to Eric Grauffel, this is his reply: "Regarding grips, I had the discussion with Vince. You can use any grip you like, factory or not but you just cannot modify it.. So adding grip tape it is ok, but removing material to add grip tape is not legal" The reply from Eric seems to be the one most consistent with the phrasing of paragraph 17.3. However, it seems unfair that it is legal to use aftermarket grips that may fit some better than others, but not modify them to fit an individual shooters hand if the fit is poor. And what exactly is "aftermarket"? How many needs to be sold before it could be called "aftermarket"? Anyone can make grips and sell them...
  15. I was just told that it was legal..? http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=225562#entry2514011
  16. First try, gonna get the feel of this for a while and then see if I want to remove some more. Will probably also put some grip tape on top of left panel to add some friction for strong hand. As you can see I made mag release and safety more available on left panel. On right panel I made some clearance for the trigger finger. Used a dremel with rotating sand paper for removing the bulk of the material, then 120, 240 and 400 grit sand paper by hand. Finished with a dozen or so layers of Scherell Extra Dunkel stock oil.
  17. Thanks for the clarification. I wasn't sure what "contour" meant, if it was just the outline or the shape and I assumed the worst. I'll go the route of modifying my wood grips, starting with making clearances for mag release and safety. Then I'll try to customize the grips to fit the shape of my hand better. :-)
  18. I have small hands too, but the Xtreme grips were too thin and flat for me. I had air between the palm of my hand and the grip with the EG Xtreme grips... Currently running the wood grips. They fill my hand and have a nice palm swell, but would like to have easier access to the magazine release and would also try something between the wood and xtreme grips in thickness. However, would also like to stay legal for IPSC production and if I read the rules correctly only factory grips are legal. Can't modify the wood grips or use the Henning grips.
  19. You can do a lot just with springs too. The plunger spring did a lot for me, although I used it to actually increase trigger weight. Go easy with the dremel and polish if you're going for Production. Those things can put you in Standard... I just do "fält" and bullseye atm, but I'm going to get into IPSC and try out PPC as well as soon as I get the opportunity. The intro courses are pretty far between up here in the north...
  20. I'm also a Swede and my Tanfoglio purchase was not overly easy. I ordered a new one through my dealer, on order he checked with the factory and they said they had them i stock and promised 2-3 weeks delivery. 8 weeks later they say, sorry we don't have them in stock, but we expect to send one from a new batch out to you at the end of January. All according to the dealer, I don't really know... Anyway, I canceled and hunted down a second hand one instead. Same model as yours, Xtreme trigger, guide rod, fp, sear, Titan hammer, Dawson FO front sight etc but original wooden grips. Ordered and tried the xtreme grips but they were too thin and flat for me (never thought I'd say that). What disciplines are you shooting with yours? I see you're using the mediums springs. I managed to keep above 1,36 kg SA trigger with the light springs, but have only shot some 50 rounds since so jury's still out on reliable ignition.
  21. Thanks, great answers as always. They should update the info on ericgrauffel.com, besides being incorrect (the xtreme rod not being 10% heavier than factory), it doesn't even mention the possible wear on the frame with the standard guide rod. Another thought, if the factory rod is so bad for the frame, the xtreme rod should be standard and the factory rod should be discarded as an obsolete design.
  22. My Stock 2 AU came with the xtreme guide rod installed. Reading the description, it's supposed to be 10% heavier than factory and is thus supposed to help with recoil management. Comparing the Xtreme with the factory guide rod that also came with the gun, I see that the Xtreme is fluted toward the front and it is a bit thicker to the rear where the spring seats, meaning that the factory guide rod should have more of it's weight towards the front, where it the weight should be the help keeping muzzle flip down. Also, when measuring the weights I notice that the weight difference is no more than one (1) single gram (my scales have trouble measuring these low weights) BUT it is the factory one that is the heavier! The weight actually is 26 and 27 grams respectively, so it's really negligible, but any difference seems to be in favor of the stock guide since it's both heavier and balanced towards the front. What am I missing? What's better with the Xtreme Guide Rod?
  23. Nealio, that would be good to know how to do. Is this possible to do with a hand file? It would also be very helpful if there's a picture that would show how the angle should be changed for a more positive engagement. It would be very good to be able to use the light hammer spring while still be on the safe side with SA weight. I've managed to get comfortably past 1360 grams of SA by changing to the original/factory plunger spring and tweaking the sear spring, this is with the xtreme medium hammer spring. Now I can even (barely) lift the 1360 gram weight with the xtreme light hammer spring installed, which gives a much more pleasant DA pull. A more positive sear engagement or a hammer spring with strength between the xtreme medium and light would take me right where I'd like to be.
  24. Now I have received the inserts. Well... I ordered the inserts that are listed "EAA Witness small". I received inserts marked "CZ 75/85". And they don't fit. They are clearly for another gun/frame. If I would use them as is, I am certain I would damage the frame of my gun. I will have to remove quite a significant amount of material to make the Tanfoglio frame fit into these inserts. I called Ransom Rest and was told that they have new owners and new personnel and according to their "cheat sheet" the CZ and Tanfoglio/EAA small frame are the same. So they use the CZ inserts for the Tanfoglio/EAA small frame. The only solution they had was a return and refund. So, if anyone wants ransom rest inserts for their small frame EAA, this is what you can expect.
