  1. For adjustable sights, I have become hooked on the Williams Fire-sights. I need not just an FO front, but FO rears too, and these things are bright. Picture is under room light, but outside they're great.
  2. Knowingly how many rounds are in your gun = gamer tactic? :-P The earlier rulebook had a bit of a description on why they believe that, but it's gone from the new rulebook. Now it's just "the way it is". (something to the effect of "in a real-life situation, you wouldn't be counting rounds") Glad that's cleared up for me. Not much of an issue for me though, since I'm using an M&P Shield, and I'm pretty slow with it. However, while researching the rules, and found something I missed. In the 1st Qtr Clarifications, my previously "illegal" S&W 1911 Performance Center 45 is now legal, slide ports and all! I was using it last year, and was told to put it away if I wanted to be scored. Started using the M&P's.
  3. I can accept the argument about not wanting to "count rounds", as this is a gamer's tactic; eliminating the slide-forward process. Must be the USPSA in me.
  4. I would say that that the "LIVE" word is being applied to both nouns, because a comma is missing. The grouping would be ... live [ ammunition or ammunition carrier]. It makes no sense in intent to retain an EMPTY mag. Who do you contact (at IDPA) for clarification?
  5. This rule 3.7.2 (quoted in whole below), says LIVE ammunition or ammunition carrier. Also, this is a description of a process, not a specification for penalty. 3.11.2 is the defined application of the penalty, and in this context, LIVE or LOADED has the same meaning. I still believe it is NOT a penalty if there is no LIVE ammunition or LOADED magazine left on the ground. 3.7.2. Loaded Cylinder/Chamber Reload (also known as a Tactical Reload or Reload with Retention) Loaded Cylinder/Chamber Reload – recharge the firearm when it is partially loaded while retaining any live ammunition or ammunition carrier.
  6. I just recently took the RO seminar with Carl Schmidt. Great class. This topic came up, and his opinion is that if a RO asks about movement, it would obligate the shooter to perform the specified movement, rather than having the option to change his/her mind at the last moment. Best to try and be prepared for all possibilities.
  7. The topic of stowing an EMPTY magazine has me confused. If the magazine is EMPTY, why stow it? I looked at the rules, and cannot find anything. Rule 3.11.2 seems to say no penalty would apply unless the magazine was LOADED. What am I missing?
  8. I have encountered two different ejectors on an M&P. On my Julie G. FS model, the ejector design is such that the pointy end (which contacts the shell) is slim and basically square. On my newer models, the extractor is L shaped.
  9. This last Sunday, I must have tapped the sight on a port on my first run. Second stage, I went blind. The FO insert came flying out. Really screwed the stage up for me. I did find the 3/4 length fragment to melt back in.
  10. I have the same Williams adjustable FO sights on a 9L, 9FS and 40L pro. Other than the CORE models, they are the same.
  11. Then why does KKM make a .40 to 9mm conversion barrel? This picture shows that there is a dimensional difference in the breach face fitment. Doubtful if its a safety issue, but does have some affect on accuracy at longer distances.
  12. In the end, just for looks. If you have seen an original 9L (not CORE or PRO) versions, the profile is like this too. Orignally, along with the ports, it all was done to lighten the slide, although lightening may not be all that effective.
  13. For 2014, the CA Penal Codes were updated to make the above link from 2008 obsolete. This is the verbiage now. As a Nevada resident, I cannot cross state line with my 20 rd mags in possession. Going to have to buy 10 rd mags. PENAL CODE SECTION 32310-32390 32310. (a) Except as provided in Article 2 (commencing with Section 32400) of this chapter and in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section 17700) of Division 2 of Title 2, commencing January 1, 2000, any person in this state who manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, lends, buys, or receives any large-capacity magazine is punishable by imprisonment in a county jail not exceeding one year or imprisonment pursuant to subdivision (h) of Section 1170. 1. For purposes of this section, "manufacturing" includes both fabricating a magazine and assembling a magazine from a combination of parts, including, but not limited to, the body, spring, follower, and floor plate or end plate, to be a fully functioning large-capacity magazine. 32311. (a) Except as provided in Article 2 (commencing with Section 32400) of this chapter and in Chapter 1 (commencing with Section 17700) of Division 2 of Title 2, commencing January 1, 2014, any person in this state who knowingly manufactures or causes to be manufactured, imports into the state, keeps for sale, or offers or exposes for sale, or who gives, lends, buys, or receives any large capacity magazine conversion kit is punishable by a fine of not more than one thousand dollars ($1,000) or imprisonment in a county jail not to exceed six months, or by both that fine and imprisonment. This section does not apply to a fully assembled large-capacity magazine, which is governed by Section 32310. 1. 14. I have the Peltor Tac version, but after I RO'd a shooter with a comp, I'm wondering if I need something more. Maybe a blast shield too. I swear my lips were flapping like a dog in a car every time he pulled the trigger.
  15. Now all you need a satellite dish, 15" flat screen (solar with battery backup), and a cooler (sandwiches and drinks (no beer)) for in between stages. Hmmm, maybe a golf cart with .....
  16. Based on the spirit of 3.3.1, there will need to be a revised 3.3.1, which states that ALL divisions must now be limited to the lowest round count governed by any paid USPSA member's legal jurisdiction. Since we now have the NY 7 rd limit, all divisions will be amended to Open 7, Lim 7, Lim 10-7, Production 7, SS 7. Revolver's are exempt. FYI: 2 Martinis on board.
  17. Wow, quite a thread. Too bad it got so heated with a few people. Now that PC 32310-32311 has been updated, there is NO legal way for a non-CA-resident to bring hi-cap mags to any California match. It is the "importing" clause that is important. So the 3.3.1 rule will basically bring everyone to O10 or L10, if such person competes. Guess I'll have to buy some 10 rd magazines now. Dave PENAL CODE SECTION 32310-32390 32310. 18. The difference is the California legislative changes passed in 2013, which became effective Jan 1 2014. It is now illegal for anyone to bring a LCM into California. Only CA residents have a pass, under specific circumstances.
  19. I'm a Nevada resident, but live close to the California border. Taking an RO class in California in a few weeks, and checked some laws new for 2014. From what I have gathered via research, a non-CA-resident may NOT bring a magazine with more than 10 round capacity into California. CA residents have different treatment, as CA residents that already owned them prior to Jan 1, 2014 may keep them. There are a few more exemptions, such as people owning LCM's prior to 2000, LEO's and such. The key is however, no one may IMPORT. (Prior to 2014, this was phrased IMPORT FOR SALE..., but no longer). The point is, NON-Residents have NO exemptions. How will rule 3.3.1 be applied in this case? As most California resident competitors may still legally use "hi-cap magazines", it would appear that all out of state competitors cannot (felony). It seems to me that "out-of-state" competitors will not be welcome. Dave
  20. 8.1.2.1 8.1.2.2 Learned something new. So this opens up a question. Is the lowest capacity rule based on what the manufacturer makes for the model, or based on what I will bring to the match? The Shield uses and comes with both a 7 and 8 rnd mag from S&W. So if I bought a couple more 8 rnd mags, and left my 7 rnd mags at home, would that follow the rules? 8.1.2.1. All magazines must be loaded to division capacity at the start signal throughout the match except in the following cases: 8.1.2.2. If a magazine is used that holds less than division capacity, the shooter will load all magazines to the capacity of the lowest magazine throughout the match.
  21. I used my Shield (EDC) for the first time this past weekend. Used both 7 and 8 rounders to "plan" my reloads to go into slide-lock at the right time when possible. Didn't do any worse than usual. The thumb safety was a bit of a hassle, but an eye opener for real carry.
  22. First gun was the SW1911 Performance Center .45. Was told its not legal under any division, because of the ported slide (even though it was from the factory that way). Got an M&P 9 FS for IDPA since then, but also shooting a modified 5" M&P 40 Limited gun in USPSA. This is confusing me now cause they feel the same and I cannot seem to stand still on reloads. My next IDPA will be with my Shield 9. Might as well use what I really carry. I'll have to stand still to reload since that thing is so small.
  23. It was something my wife thought I should have for fun (x-mas present), but it turned out to be quite an eye opener. What I thought I was doing, is not what I'm doing. Shows what needs work. In essence, its a training aide.
  24. The point that was made in John's statement indicates the FRAME is not the definition of the model. Serial number is not relevant. It is the sum of the components which make the model. For all the M&P's other than .45 and Shield, the slide assembly is the ONLY model specific portion of the pistol. There isn't any rule indicating that a pistol must remain "as sold" in the box. That would certainly make this a whole different situation. To do so would complicate matters greatly when it came time to replace certain parts that are serialized. And for the record, the original pistol is a 9L CORE. Dave
  25. The GoPro I have is wireless, both with a remote (inc), or by use of the iPhone/And app in wireless mode. (The GoPro becomes a wireless hot-spot to your smartphone). You can live preview, start/stop, playback, delete, and make all the setting changes while wearing it. The app has a menu driven interface for all the options. Never have to handle the camera during a match. The Pivothead is however much more suited for this particular use, as its POV is dead on. You will have to deal with the GoPro's bulk, but with my ear muffs on, I forget its there after a few minutes. I'm going to change out the waterproof case for a lightweight skeleton one, which will cut the weight in half. Adding a press-on lens protector too. The benefit of the GoPro is that it has many more video recording options, and can be used in other venues where you might want to mount the camera to your snowboard, dog, car, drone or whatever. Saw a cute toy at CES this year where a little tracker (button) is worn by you, and a device holding the GoPro will keep it pointed at you real-time as you move around. Dave
