  1. For all your experience is there and advantage or disadvantage to reloading plated bullets , FMJ with exposed base or plated FMJ?????...and the concave base bullets any advantages ..I reload 147 grain for practice , IDPA and USPSA. I've been trying the XTREME bullets and they seems to be satisfactory ..just loaded some test HP to try.......I'm not that good a shot to get excited about absolute accuracy...just a good all around 9 mm round.....thanks in advance.
  2. I just went through this problem , but all my primers were seating high ......we explored all kinds of possibilities .....after help from a fellow poster I found my primer seating assembly had come loose.........it drove me crazy......removed , cleaned and tightened up ......off and running.....
  3. Rboyes.....you are the big winner!!!!!!!.......the primer seating rod was not fully screwed into the base...first round perfect!!!!!!!! As always, thank you guys for helping a poor dumb a~> on their way....this was driving me nuts.....more FMJ tonight !!!!!!!
  4. Thanks for the guidance.......all the brass are cleaned reloads....even tried some new brass to eliminate bad brass..the anvil rises to the bevel on the shell plate ...that looks ok.......I'm applying the same pressure as all previous reloads. Apparently the primer anvil rod has a stop underneath so there is only so far it can come up......it's almost as though the casing is rising up not allowing the primer to be seated all the way up. I have cleaned and adjusted the shell plate every way possible to create minimum rise when the primer is inserted ....this is an interesting predicament .......possibly the shell plate is damaged?????.....it goes on.....
  5. Thanks for the kind replies about the previous primer problems....cleaned and seems ok...now another primer situation is occurring ......primers are to high in the casing.....adj. she'll plate to exact specs, cleaned and lubed...even tried CCI primers instead of Federals for hardness. All the primers are perfectly to high.....Dillon is on it , but wondering if anyone else has encountered this situation??? And lesson learned about short stroking the press and the resulting crushed primers....live and learn! Thanks............
  6. Was running a large batch of 9 mm yesterday and had my first primer go in sideways....powder went everywhere . Started checking the next couple of primers and they looked like they had "dimples" in them and were distorted.......first time. Readjusted the shell plate and while I was at it short light compressed air under and around the plate...a surprising amount of powder came out. Is it possible that powder was lodged under the plate or around the primer disc causing primer problems??......After readjustment and cleaning primers seemed ok. Thoughts ??? And while I'm boring you guys........I had my first " bad " run on primers on a previous load session. Using CCI sm .pistol primers on 9 mm reloads and I thought I checked all my reloads in my100 round case guage. When I went to the range I had a 40% FTF.......primers were all screwed up....most sitting to high but most were FTF and the primers had a good clean strike.....this was depressing....my worst run ever.....what did I do wrong...bad primers, improper seating, not holding my mouth right, music to loud. Testing a new run tomorrow........thanks .........
  7. If I can relay my experiences....I'm 62 and near vision was going fast....long distance improving....go figure. My experience has been with reversed bi-focals for lack of a better term. My newest set is from the Rudy Project. They inserted a prescription insert into the top of both lenses which was a variation from my reading glasses to compensate for the distance to the front sight.....it is a truly amazing effect. No offense to the above poster , but my theory is the front sight is everything to me, now it's crystal clear while allowing a total comprehension of the target in the distance and side views. Is this an expensive process???...well relative to the cost of ammo...I say absolutely not. Now the bad news...it's useless in long gun shooting...the top insert distorts the red dot and forces one top hold their head back to utilize the lower clear part of the lense.....I'm trying to figure this part out...and I will...Thanks
  8. Any guidance on powder replacement for Vih N320......shooting 9mm in a 2011. Downloading 147 FMJ for competition . Choices between w231 and Titegroup ????......the N320 has been really a joy to load and shoot but it is simply not available in NOVA......very sad.....thanks in advance...you guys are always a great resource !!!!!!!
  9. I load only 147 9 mm on my Dillon 650. I would strongly suggest finding an NRA metallic reloading class and attending before you get to far along. I took the class before I started getting serious and it was the best thing ever....many, many questions answered..Its part of why we are members. Ditto on borrowing a chrono after you reach that point. Reloading is a great hobby. I'm not convinced there is that much of a financial gain , but the ability to completely control my loads are worth every moment....my2 cents worth
  10. Finally got my dream pistol...STI Edge in 9mm....I shoot 147 grn. assorted bullets........any suggestions on min. recoil loads??.......thanks to everyone here for some really good ideas in the past!!!!
  11. I don't like using large bins. Especially if you are trying to go fast. If you run out of primer or powder, or have some random quality problem, it is a lot nicer to have to sort through 100 cases vs sorting through 600. Imagine your seating die loosens up, and your oal drifts too high. How many cases do you want to sort through and measure? an out of powder and you drop a squib round in a bin of 400. This is an excellent point.......not that there is any chance I could screw anything up!!!!!!.......to kinda nreak things up I also have a 100 rounds case guage from Brian Enos that I recheck every round before it goes in the range box....yea OCD slows things down...thanks for the suggestions..............
  12. Thanks to all for the input.....several observations : One must have a bullet feeder to haul ass like that .....I do not...but thank god for my case feeder!!!!!!!! I will pre-load all my primer tubes prior to making my large run. I will also figure a way to hold more finished product in a bin as opposed to the factory smaller one Everything else I think I got prepped prior to going to work... That being said...I will still recheck powder loads on a random basis and also measure total bullett specs. randomly as well. Thanks to all for making me smarterrer...........I think !!
  13. I just glanced at an older post where someone claimed they were loading pistol at a rate of 1000 rounds per hour. Can someone explain the logistics of this feat to me......I'm using a 650 with case feeder .....do you preload all your primers and dump them?.....I get the part of monitoring your powder and cases.......but this rate seems really above my ability...... Loading primers seems to be a time killer for me ...plus I will load 100-200 rounds ...take a break and guage them and give then a once over.....breaks up the monotony a little.....any input appreciated ....
  14. I have the reverse bi focals.....they are in safety frames and seem to work ok...my near vision is getting to the point where the front sight were a total blur. I tried the insert model with the clip in optic....hated it...... I'm looking at the Rudy Project glasses....any experience????? The safety glasses I use now are a traditional frame and they constantly fog up in hot humid weather....I've tried every remedy to eliminate this problem....when it happens I'm screwed... The Rudy frames seem to offer a more tradition sport frame I'm hoping will protect me but let air move around the frame......thanks...any input on Rudy appreciated....they ain't cheap.
  15. After assistance with kind folks here...I laddered my 147's....from 3.0-3.4.........the 3.0 was a diaster in my Limited 34......I'm sticking with 3.3 with Titegroup and 3.2-.3.3 using N231..... It's very interesting to experiment with the effects different powders and loads have on rounds. I'm having trouble discerning any substantial difference in similar bullets though..........
  16. Rob...got all of the above....I will be loading some today and try the reduced spring...thank much for the information....John
  17. Hope you guys don't mind me keeping this thread going!!...Red Ryder...I'm currently using a 14 lb. spring (new) in my 34... Would a reduction to 12/13 lbs make a substantial difference with a lighter load??...just trying to get smarterrer............thanks
  18. Once again thanks for the replies...if anyone's interested.....I loaded 4 different loads with the V320 using 3 different 147 grn. RN bullets. Zero, Delta and Ranier. Experimented with 3.4 , 3.3 , 3.2 and 3.0-3.1 grains...kinda searching for a reduction in recoil without sacrifice in accuracy.........it was an interesting experience , first time for me, noticing what a difference the deviation of powder load and bullets really made....the bottom line from my limited experience I really did not notice significant difference in the projectiles....but the powder was a different matter. I feel the 3.3 grn load was best for me overall. Just as a majority of folks told me it would be. The most interesting was the 3.0-3.1 grn load...this is where things went south fast...FTF , stove pipes and feed problems...yikes..so much for my first visit to "Bunny" load land. All of these rounds are from my Limited Glock 34 . I am goin to experiment with Titiegroup in the 3.2-3.3 range and see if the results are different. Sorry for the long post ....but this is pretty interesting stuff to me.....and once again..thanks for the precious data!!
  19. First.....thank you for the kind replies and data on the 147' s with V320..... In my defense....Vithavuori does NOT list proper data using N320 with 147 RN bullet.....I would not ask the question or bother people If the data were apparent....and no I did not search the reems of data on this list.......you guys need to lighten up on a simple question....takes the fun out of it......
  20. Wondering if anyone can assist.......trying Vih. N320 with a couple of different 147grn RN bullets....Delta, Bayou.......I cannot find correct load data with the N320 and 147rn.....am I missing something????....Thanks in advance.......John
  21. I am never ceased to be amazed at the level of quality, customer service and attitude of all the folks at Dillon Precision. I was having very strange alignment problems with my 650. After trying to solve the problem for over 2 hours on a Saturday.......yes Saturday...the service advisor sent a shipping label and I returned the unit.... Not only was the unit completely repaired...but the die set was returned and reset to perfection. I have had multiple contacts with the Dilllon company over the past year regarding replacement parts , parts I screwed up , and an alignment tool..N.C.......and every experience is the same...Excellent . I wish some of the overpaid CEO's of other companies would explore the Dillon philosophy of doing business and apply them to the screwed up companies they manage. Enough already...... I wish everyone and Dillon Precision a Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year.....and thanks for all your help!! John
  22. 650 with casefeeder.......Dillon is on of the finest American companies I've ever dealt with.....the no BS warranty is exactly what it means..........and believe me they have saved me on more than one occasion ........it's amazing the stuff these guys have done to help me.......there really is no decision to make...if you don't get the 650 you will kick yourself later....voice of experience.....Happy Holidays to all !!!!!!!!!!
  23. Whatever it's worth.....I purchased a three door metal storage cabinet at Harbor Freight on sale....stores powder, primers and cleaning supplies perfectly........its a 3 beer job to assemble this erector set, but it really works well and has locks on all 3 doors......just sayin'.
  24. I was referring to the older style..non-carbide ??...dies......now if Brian will make a video on aligning the 650....us dull wits would be grateful. Happy Holidays to all the interesting people that support this forum !!!!.......John
  25. Always late to the party..finished watching Brians video on the XL650.....This should come with every press...simple, well explained and clearly photographed. however , this video is now almost 23 years old...YIKES. Any chance of seeing an updated version????...some stuff has changed greatly.... Does anyone still subscribe to lubing your reloads and then cleaning them off after reloading....this was new to me. If you get a Dillon 650...BUY THIS VIDEO...it makes life easy
