  1. +1 on the Pro Chrono......just used mine yesterday for the first time....EXCELLENT unit....did everything it promised and more....I apparently need the Bluetooth attachment so I do not have to go to the unit and change strings. Someone else also suggested replacing the metal rods for the diffuser with wooden dowels as to prevent damage to the machine....anybody have experience with this??
  2. Thanks.......does this Blue tooth attachment work as advertised???
  3. After reloading 5-6K 9mm rounds , I figured it was time to pull the trigger on my own chronograph...yea I know...late to the party. After my due dillagance and research.....everybody has good and bad to say on all the popular models, I purchased a CE Pro digital model. I took it to the range yesterday on its maiden voyage. Got a new tripod , instruction absorbed??...set it up about 10 feet from the pistol with a back up target . I shot 12 different strings of different loads .....the machine preformed FLAWLESSL!!!!!!....Not only were all the shots recorded , but the summary data at the end of each string was excellent. The Good: I would recommend this unit to anyone looking for an occasional pistol Chrony. The instructions are straight forward , the machine is simple to use , and you can actually see the data from 10' away. The Bad: I did not realize you have to physically go to the unit to advance it to the next string. This is a royal pain....I'm investing in some device to eliminate this. The other bad news .....I am now the proud owner of 1200 rounds on 9 mm that barely make Minor power factor. Well I will use this stuff up and increase my charge for a better margin of error. I primarily use 3.4 grns. Of Vih. N320 with an Xtreme 147 HP from an STI Edge. Will increase to 3.5 - 3.6 for security . I'm sure this is all old news to you pros .....but I found the whole process fascinating and the machine is excellent. Just my experiences!!
  4. Any thoughts on loads for my 9mm Edge??....I'm currently running a 147grn. Xtreme HP over 3.4 grns. of Vih N320. this combination seems to be working out well in this pistol . After receiving some feed back about my COL I increased it to 1.14...from 1.135...I guess this seems like a minor adjustment. I really enjoy the hand loading aspect of this sport and always searching for peoples experiences, good and bad, with different combinations , especially different results with different COL.. I want to stick with the Xtreme 147 bullet..I know this narrows the field down considerably , but any thughts are greatly appreciated. Thnaks in advance.
  5. I would strongly suggest an NRA metallic reloading class ....was the best thing I did. It saved me a lot of time and money before jumping in. I also read the ABC's of reloading ....great starter book.......
  6. My 2 cents...I asked the same question about the debris you showed in the empty case...I cleaned a batch from the range and was surprised to see this "waxy" substance inside the shell....I actually, cleaned them again to no avail. One of our brilliant members told me its sealant used on some ammo to act as a waterproofer.....asked and answered. I load 147 Xtreme HP ove 3.4 grns of Vih. N320 in my edge....very, very happy. I use one of the 100 round case gauges and test EVERY round I load......I've found the every once in awhile I will get a group of range brass that is a really tight fit in the gauge and then load 500 that ore ok...I have attributed it to the downside of using range brass to reload...I have no choice until I get enough to start recycling the ones I have ....hope,this makes sense!!!?.lol
  7. In my defense........I have done absolutely NO modifications to my Edge.....the mag problems are inherent with the conversion from 40/45 to 9 mm by design. If the mags were worry free Dave Dawson would not make a video on STI mag tuning and repair. Replacing the barrel after 50 rounds is not operator error. Failure to peen the rear sight is not operator error. An extractor going bad after 2000 rounds is not operator error. I am beyond anal with the cleaning and maintence of all my firearms. The mag problem is inherent to this design. I run 11 stock STI 9 mm 140 mags and have had problems with failure to slide lock and tilting followers with EVERY mag.i change the springs regularly...they are cheap . Recoil spring and firing pin spring changed on a regular basis. I have spent hours perfecting a " perfect 147 grn load for,the pistol ...and feel I've done a pretty good job.imho. I have come to the conclusion it's the Ferrari syndrome ...a finely tuned machine needs additional love. I switched from using to G34's....one IDPA and one set up for limited USPSA........these pistols are bullet proof guns...hands down....many modifications done to the limited gun....each improving its ability. I hope I'm not cursed and am the only one having problems getting the Edge "Tuned"....... I find it very difficult to believe I am......just my experiences....good and bad....thanks for the replies.....
  8. Started out with Federals.....had some issues....went to CCI SP......10,000 later very satisfied !!!!.....plus I really like the way they are packaged ....almost a perfect " flip" lol........Federal packaging sucks big time.........my opinion !!
  9. Rob, it's a blessing and a curse. My bride gave me this 9 mm edge for Christmas..always wanted one..to,cheap to pull the trigger. Upon receipt of the pistol and 50 rounds down the tube shell lodged in barrel slide locked up. Finally got it freed up returned to STI...bad barrel, replaced,. 2 weeks later pin from rear sight gone, was never peened. 2 weeks later new pin received....as opposed to paper clip. Next failure to extract....called STI discussed problem sent me a new extractor....had to file and try to make it fit.oooops! Part 2 ........slide became very slow after 4-500 rounds...FTF common. Sent the Edge back to Dave Dawson whom she purchased the gun from initially . Also send 6 of my STI mags that simply would not function . Mr. Dawson replaced and fitted new extractor, went over the whole pistol and reworked the mags. Upon receiving the pistol back from Dawson....it ran like a scolded dog......the great tech guy at Dawson's instructed me in the absolute proper cleaning and lube procedure for my gun!!!! After an additional 4-5 k rounds thru it the gun works great ! Hope I'm not cursing myself!!!!!, but some of the mags are starting to fail to stop side again...I guess I'll have,to live with bad mags from STI? This pistol has been a very interesting experience coming from 2 limited G34's. I absolutely love, this darn pistol....it fabulous . I think STI has some major, major quality control problems. The Tech folks at STI are first rate and tried to help,me as well as possible. The Dawson team really stepped up to the plate. I have purchased a darn large amount of stuff from Dave Dawson over the years for my glock and this STI. They had,me return the Edge and made it right and did it fast . It a pleasure to,deal, with Daves company every time .Would I buy another Edge......call me crazy ....yes......from Dawson's !!! Sorry for the long response.........
  10. Mine was the roller handle.......this is funny....we all can have the same problems........put a shot of Teflon spray on both ends of the roller......
  11. I settled on 1.13-1.135.....147 Xtreme HP.......had any problems with you mags or pistol in 9mm???????? Thanks.
  12. I had the same situation arise with my 9 mm Edge. I thought...how can this pistol get this dirty after 5-600 rounds...slide would " slow down" as yours. I dropped any and all CLP products.....clean the gun with Gunscrubber/ brake cleaner oil gun with SP10. I carry a small bottle of oil in a needle dispenser in my bag and put a few drops on barrel and slide during a heavy shooting session....problem eliminated so far .....and keep an eye on the recoil spring...they are not that expensive.......my experiences....
  13. Youngeyes....Thanks for the search results.....just read the first 4 pages of the gun cleaning post and more confused than ever......this thing ran the gammet from I clean my pistol every time I go to the range to my Les Bear has 100k rounds through it and I cleaned the barrel once in 1976.......Fascinating how different the experiences and responses are from shooters based on multiple backgrounds...lol....John
  14. Thanks for the replies...I got enough of Brian's Slide Lube to last me the rest of my life...lol....I do shoot competitively and what I consider a fair amount, 2-3 k 9mm a month. The essence of my original question, which I'm sure, was not phrased properly....Is there any advantage to totally cleaning your material and then lubricating as a separate operation? I know how much cumulative wisdom is here and was just wondering if you guys buy into the CLP theory.....or if it really doesn't make any difference one way or the other.....I appreciate the feedback !!!
  15. This is a very informative thread....THANKS......I've settled on 3.4 Grns. On Vih N320 with the Xtreme 147 HP....in an Edge....seems to be be best trade off of power/ perceived recoil....I really like the bullets.....
  16. Been cleaning firearms for 50+ years and have some questions/observations of my fellow readers ?? I started out with the Hoppes solvent / Remoil lubricant syndrome. As time progressed and I thought the quality and composition of cleaner- lubricants improved greatly I switched over to the CLP mentality....clean, lubricate and protect in one easy step. After years of applying various products to my weapons.....I kept noticing my bore pads and rags, q- tips etc were really dirty......after cleaning, lubricating and protecting. I have tried switching back to my original cleaning procedure......which has become Gunscrubber and FS10 oil. I am now somewhat convinced that this CLPtheory of doing everything at once did nothing well !!........I'm not a scientist , and am not qualified to comment on any magical coating left on parts from CLP? However....I'm am now of the thought that I clean all the items completely , Gunscrubber, and then lubricate as needed, SP10' I'm ahead of the game. I'm specifically using an STI Edge as an example, the SP10 was referred by Dawson's . I like the stuff a lot...?.As suggested if I'm doing a lot of shooting, just add some more lubricant at the range, barrel , slide, etc. and keep on a shooting. Seems to be working very well. I know with the thousands of products available for cleaning it can be overwhelming with all the claims. My thoughts for the day ...comments welcome.......never to old to learn from others. John
  17. Thanks for the cleaning input....I learned the hard way. Cleaned several loads of 9 mm in my Thumblers and the stuff was soooo clean they hung up on the dies. After this I returned to dry tumbling with Flitx and Dillons case polish in my Lyman's. The brass is clean, stays polished and has a " lube" effect on each one. I still SS wet clean my rifle brass...I think it's a pain personally.......
  18. An update on the station one shell problem......well I tried all 3 of the suggestions!!..... I adjusted the triangular block forward to ensure seating, a dab of grease on the lower side of the shell plate and re- centered the de priming die on station one.......don't know who to give the prize money to ........but I'm seem to be humming along smoothly again. I've said it before....THANK YOU for all the helpful suggestions I'm actually reploishing some 9 mm brass in a tumbler with polish to see if it helps with this dry batch of Stainless cleaned cartridges.
  19. Good thread !!...... I'm 61 and found my near vision was presenting a severe problem with pistol front sight clarity....after several attempts with modified glasses I bit the bullet and got a pair of Rudy reverse prescription glasses. The near adjustment is on the top of the lense with no correction on the bottom. The GOOD....perfect front sight picture , light comfortable and fully adjustable frames. The BAD.......cannot use for anything but pistol...I have a cheap pair of normal bi- focal for long guns. The trade off is the Rudy's do blurr the target , but I have concluded the front sight clarity outweighs the distance problem. It's a whole new world for us old folks......thanks to Rudy and my eye doctor for several modifications to the lenses along the way.....my experience !
  20. Thanks will try adjustment The additional problem is when the case is seated in the plate as I raise it up the casing is loose and hits the de priming die , thus a lock up.... Must adjust it by hand to proceed . Only happens maybe 1 in 5 shells Thanks!!!!
  21. Thanks for your input. Reloaded some more 9 mm last night. The problem I'm having is intermittent ,,,when the brass is being pushed into the shell plate it hangs up. Either requiring jiggling of the handle to seat. Once seated it appears loose , and then it is NOT aligned with the de primer die, and hangs up,again.. What a pain !!!!.......I have throughly cleaned and adjusted the shell plate, greased and even replaced the ramp, and rechecked the brass.....I'm a slow study......but am confused. Once my bad boy is working it's a wonderful machine....and can knock some 9 mm out.....just would love to figure this first stage thing out!!!!....thanks in advance....if you guys think it makes any difference...this brass was cleaned wet with stainless. Most all my other is dry tumbled with polish....the only wat I will ever do it again....the SS is Tooooo clean?
  22. Been loading 9 mm 147 Xtremes for practice and matches. A couple of interesting developments. I'm noticing some very fine brass shavings around the plate. Perhaps it's always been there but seems to be a little more prominent. Second....new casings are intermittently hanging up when being inserted into the shell plate. I have re-adjusted the shell plate to Dillon specs. ????.....and still happens ....this is a pain in the butt.....powder spills , etc. Shell plate always cleaned and lubed, ....it is possible I'm not adjusting the plate properly".....everything else is perfect......except not ordering enough bullets at one time....lol Thanks in advance......this site is the best....on many levels!!!!!
  23. I must admit...I was very surprised at the results from 3.0 grns........I though they would be considerably lower......I was struggling with 3.0 in my STI Edge.....I'm settling on 3.4 now for dependable results. It interesting how different loads react in different pistols....yes I'm a master of the obvious!!!!
  24. Yep.....primer punch came loose on mine....also clean primer assy. Thanks Dillon tech.support.
  25. Blue Jacket.......I agree with everything you mentioned......and yea, I still carry my G34 just in case....lol.
