  1. No, it's not tri-topped. Must be the lighting. The top is .400" wide. It's probably casting a shadow..
  2. The dovetail cut ended up a little deeper than planned. Luckily, I discovered the "rescue" sight.
  3. Yea, what's up with that? I thought that you were talking a class? I think I was sick or asleep the day they taught that! Seriously, for a split second before I put the end mill in the chuck, I thought it might not be a good idea. Then I rationalized that since I was only taking small passes it would be ok. I promise I won't do it anymore! That's what I get for posting pictures- caught in the act.... Thanks for sharing the pics mr1911. I've had a backup gun bail me out twice at major matches. I never leave home without it.
  4. want2race, I deliberately went with the Gold Cup trigger because I wanted it to big for the frame. I don't like sloppy loose triggers so I'll fit this one to my liking. After a lot of thinking, I decided to tackle the flat top again. I decided I wasn't happy with how it turned out. So with the advice of Matt and others, I paralleled the slide by indicating the slide just off to the side of my previous cut. It really took some doing to get it right on, but I think it came out ok- all things considered. I ended up taking off 40 thousandths to get it reasonably close. The dovetail is 75 thousandths deep and the dovetail cutter nearly went through the slide. You can see a dimple in the middle of the dovetail and you can feel it push through from inside the slide. I have an idea how I'm going to fix it, but I am open to suggestions. After I finished the flat top, I finished the front dovetail and first cut for the Bomar. I had to call it quits for the night. I normally would not have taken the flat top that deep, but I think it looks pretty bad a$$ now!!
  5. Sasquatch, The trigger is a Gold Cup series EGW trigger. It's heavy though, and it will require a lot of work to get it competition ready. Joe4d, Thanks for the offer. That was very generous. I bought a staker tool, but I'm sure I don't have everything yet. What else do you have laying around??
  6. Thanks guys! I appreciate the photos. I'm still pondering....
  7. I'm not sure what I'm going to do at this point. At first I was pretty pissed, then thought it looked kind of cool. Now, I'm having second thoughts.
  8. I made it to shop class tonight to do some work on the slide. I decided to do something a little unique with the flat topping. I hope the pics turned out ok. I ran out of time so I'll have to do the dovetails on wed.
  9. Matt, Thanks a million. Chris
  10. How do you cut a slide to accept a Bomar sight?
  11. Good Lord!! Are you serious? They can break in half? I've never heard of that happening, and I've had some weird things break before. I'm planning to cut the dovetails tomorrow night. Thanks for the encouragement everyone. I appreciate it!!
  12. Thanks for the link. I learned something I didn't know.
  13. You have got to be Sh&*ing me!! Anybody want to buy a set of swenson thumb safeties that have one half of one side partially polished?
  14. So far, I'm not impressed with them. I've read here that they are a "pain in the a$$" to fit. The package they came in had patent information on it. I'd hate to see how these things would turn out if I didn't clean them up a bit before the final finish. edited to add: Are Swensons legal in SS and/or CDP?
  15. I had some time today so I decided to begin cleaning up the swenson thumb safety I bought. These things are NASTY. I'm starting to rethink my plans for a thumb safety.
  16. That was the project I enjoyed the most. It took me ten hours to make them, but it was incredibly rewarding!
  17. I hope you guys enjoy this! I'll get some "action" photos in shop class. You won't believe the machine shop we have here in Davenport, Iowa. If you're interesting in classes, you should check out the Blong Technology Center. I challenge you to find something better. Plus, the instructors are gun crazy like us.
  18. I'm done with my course work. Now I get to work on my mill project. Luckily, my instructor is a gun enthusiast so when I suggested I do a 1911 build, he was all for it. Here is some of the work I've done with a Bridgeport.
  19. That's not a bad idea. I am a little worried about the frame's weight. I love living close to Brownells- except for the sales tax I didn't use to have to pay. I ordered the dovetail cutter yesterday. It arrived today. Monday night. 5 PM. Shop class. It's on now........
  20. Not without some extra-special attention. I'm going to get aggressive with the slide and see where I'm at with weight. I'll probably have to remove some weight from the frame to be legal. Zhunter is correct, this is a SS gun- and I should get voting-member status just for posting this thread. Hell, I should get a board member position. Mark, thanks for all the help! I have two more packages arriving tomorrow via FIL courier.
  21. rvb, I'm not getting your point. When has there been a big enough difference between GM's that would justify a Great-Grand-Master division? I'm not sure if you're saying that I'm being silly, or you're trying to be silly, or who is being silly? Huh? What just happened? USPSA has six classes, IDPA has five. I don't see what the big deal is with adding another class to IDPA.
  22. I've been planning this build for a long time. I am going to start with the slide- as soon as my cutters get here from Brownells. I'll post pictures of the project as I go.
  23. I couldn't AGREE more. The Extreme Engineering kits are fantastic!
  24. Shooters that LAMR before verifying to themselves that the range is clear. Not checking to see that hostages and No Shoots have been pasted when it's your turn to shoot.
