Garlic for days! Have your shooting hand chopped off, or sell all your guns and never own another one for the rest of your life?
  2. I use ELS and like it. My best advice, get on the classified section and start looking for discount cards/codes for safariland gear. They used to have 50% off cards and I believe 40% cards are running around. You can use it on your belt system, mag pouches, holsters and even a slick 3-gun bag. Sometimes people will give them to you, sometimes they will sell them to you for a nominal fee, but it'll save you hundreds of dollars on your set-up. (which can be used on ammo.) Also, if you can find an experienced 3-gunner to show you the ropes, someone that'll take you under their wing, that's gold. It helped me a lot to ask all my silly new guy questions to just a couple of guy instead of being embarrassed to ask random people all of the time. This forum has also been valuable as well. Good Luck and welcome to 3-Gun! G

Waffles! (Making me miss Waffle House now...) Drowning or Burned to death?
  4. I don't want to high-jack the thread, but I've had minimal work done to my Versamax. Just the port opened up, extension tube and switched out safety, bolt release etc. I would love a list or as many ideas of things that can be done to a Versamax. I wouldn't even know what to ask to have done to my shotgun, or what to tell friends to ask for that they should have done. Do you typically request work done (this seems obvious), or can you literally send someone your shotgun and tell them to trouble shoot problems and make it shoot magic unicorns? Any things you guys could share to consider having done (non-cosmetic) would be really cool to know! Thanks, G

Depends on visual appeal, firmness, shape etc. But natural almost always. Jellies: Grape, Strawberry or a Berry? (raspberry, black etc.)
  6. 5. NFA firearm ownership can be idiosyncratic. They are NOT treated like 'standard' firearms in several important ways. Yes, please expand if you have time. knowledge is power. Also, what happens when people pass away with NFA stamps/rifles? Can they be passed onto family members? if so, how? If not, what happens to them?

Yes. I love me some pizza! some chains are better than some local, some local better than some chains. Depends where you go. But for my location and ease of acquiring said pizza...typically chain pizza. Sandy beach or snowy mountain?

Waffle House...no question. More valuable...or possibly less valuable. A Stag Arms AR or an M&P with stippling and a Cerakote paint job?
  10. Nordic Components 18" barrel in .223 Wylde, Black Hole Weaponry makes a decent barrel as well. 14.5", 16", 18" are all fine. Any of these triggers :AR Gold, Hiperfire 24C, Giessele, Timney, CMC Flat Trigger (Probably your best buy) Compensator: Miculek compensator (Best buy) SJC Titan, Triangle Sports Rolling Thunder, Seekins ATC Comp, Carbon Arms Gas Hog. For something that works pretty well and LOOKS really cool. (A lot of these actually look cool.) but I like the VG6 Precision Epsilon. It's really cool looking IMO. Warne Scope X-Skel Mount (It's a one piece that's the correct height and just works.) Lots of good gas blocks. I would do something that fits under the hand guard. If you have to spend your money, do it on the parts above. Magpul furniture is more than fine, I have a few handguards I like, but there are so many, it really depends on what you want to do. I'm sure other people will chime in soon. There are so many options, you could go all mil-spec for what you want to do, but for competition, it's fun to have competition-type toys on the rifle. For those itty bitty groups, you'll want a better barrel and trigger. Good luck with the build! G

  12. Thanks Stlhead. The first time is the hardest. One day at a time... right?
  13. Tales from the Gear Whore... OK, I admit it SingleTracker, I'm THAT guy. I like the coolest crap, I gravitate toward threads that start with "What's the best...?" My wife works in the firearms industry so sometimes I get "perks". If I had paid for everything on my rifle (including the fancy paint job, which I wouldn't trade for the world for sentimental reasons) my rifle would cost two to three times what my skill level deserves. I do have my budget limitations, I run a glock but there's a point to my story. LISTEN TO WHAT EVERYONE ABOVE ME WROTE! For all my fancy shmancy part of my rifle, I would need to be a pro shooter to even notice a difference. I'm most definitely a middle of the pack shooter. Practicing is rough. Life has thrown my family a few curveballs, but more importantly, ammo costs money. Being a gear whore, I LOVE every part of my rifle, but at my level, when the timer goes BEEP I can't tell the difference between my Geissele trigger on my .308 and my Hiperfire 24c trigger on my .223. I probably couldn't feel the difference between my really cool compensator that I have and any other compensator out there. I'm barely good enough to know which reticles I like on my optics. Admitedly, this is pretty lame of me, but the ability to feel those subtle differences comes with more time behind the rifle than I have at this point. What I should do... is shoot 40,000 more rounds and do 20 more matches. I SHOULD HAVE listened to all of the smart people on this forum. Cool stuff is fun and it's SO SO tempting to learn about it and buy it. I love learning about it for knowledge. I could pick parts to build top end rifles in 6-10 different configurations, but I didn't need to know that to shoot a match, I didn't need to know that to have fun shooting matches and I won't need to know that until my skill level gets about 500% better. Learn from my... I wouldn't call them mistakes, but not very efficient or productive choices and build something affordable, get an Armalite (great rifle for the price, the handguard is super light and the compensator looks cool and is tunable.) or build something fun and affordable...and spend the rest on ammo and match fees. I will echo what other's have said about what makes a good 3-gun rifle, I would say a good barrel, trigger, compensator and an optic that you understand and can use effectively. These have varying weights of importance depending on the match you shoot, the distances etc. But the best answer, also stated above, is a good shooter, so make sure you save enough in the budget for ammo and save enough time to practice. I also found that having a good friend/mentor to walk you through things in the beginning is invaluable. My name is Greg, and I'm a gun-gear-a-holic.

  15. I've been kicking around the idea of building an SBR for fun and for something lighter that my wife can comfortably use. What's the basic process in building one. Doesn't have to be detailed, but I don't know some things. Assuming we made a trust for the SBR so we both could share responsibility etc. 1. Can I buy all the parts and then do the paperwork before it gets put together? 2. Do I have to buy the lower and designate it SBR before purchasing any other parts? 3. If I just build an AR pistol and wanted to throw on a stock to transition into an SBR, is that legal? 4. 7", 10.5" is that personal preference and what consideration are there to make in deciding. 5. Any other tips or tricks or words of experience you want to throw my way before I do this? Anyway...a quick 411 on the basic ins and outs of an SBR would be great. I didn't see any threads about it on the forum. Thanks in advance! G
  16. I will be getting a 43 for concealed carry and was wondering if the dot was overkill. I'm a decent shooter at best (Shoot 3-Gun and am probably a C class shooter when I have time for USPSA) and with a 2 and a 3 year old at home, practice time is limited. Optimally, I would be a grandmaster with the gun and will certainly make sure I'm proficient with it before carrying, but comfortable and proficient might be as good as it gets for the immediate future. So... Under the circumstances of having to actually use it, and the pressures and stresses that come at you if you had to do so, would the dot be beneficial, be in the way, too large for the gun, not matter? Silly way to drop some coin? Or tactically useful? What say you? G
  17. nice. a good start. Thank you. So upgrade one (If I so desire) is slide and spring. Upgrade two, nozzle and mag valves? No barrel upgrade? I've heard the 6.01 barrels help fps.
  18. Looking to start training at home more and wanted to try airsoft. I'm a complete airsoft noob and was looking at the 5.1. I know this is a good pistol, but is there anything I'd want to do to it for pistol training that is good for pistol training? Upgraded hopup, barrel etc.? I see there are a few variations of the 5.1. Hi-kick hi-grouping, gold match and some "custom" versions... Anyone have a quick 411 for the new airsoft guy?

  20. That's a fantastic deal on the Nikon 3-12 scope, but that link isn't showing me a discount and it looks like the reticle is different. Is there a code, or am I doing it wrong?
  21. I know people that clip the spring at 12" past the end of the magazine tube uncoiled. Sometimes, that risks there not being enough tension to feed the last few shots reliably. I originally cut my spring to 13" past the tube and sometimes, after a bunch of matches, I experienced that exact thing. (Which, admittedly could potentially be a carrier dog spring problem or another problem that escapes my mind at the moment.) You can stretch out that spring to get more mileage out of it, but I don't have a master's degree in spring tension and I'm not sure if that actually helps, or if it just makes me feel better because a few pro shooters told me to do it at one point in time. Keith Garcia recommended to me a 14" past the tube and that is what I currently run. It's not too tight to load 2 and I figure taking off more is easier than putting it back on... Long story short, somewhere between 12"-14"+ as long as you can smoothly throw your last 2 shells in the tube. I also use the Nordic Component springs. Not sure if there's any difference in spring tension between the two. Happy Thanksgiving!
