  1. I was keen to try this to shoot Open Speed Steel with low PF 9mm rounds in my 38SC Open gun, but have been waiting to read more about others that have tried it before I try it myself...
  2. A friend of mine had his factory STI slide crack in the same place. When we asked him about it, he said he put 20k rounds through leading up to the World Shoot, and often would shoot 100rnds at a time wihtout letting it cool down. He reckons that he may have re-tempered the metal by letting it get too hot.
  3. After reading part 2 and a small amount of dry-fire, I dropped from an average of 6.09s to an average of 4.80s!! Thanks Brian - now I just need to incorporate this between ALL targets I shoot!!
  4. Can you elaborate on this a bit more - or do you have any hints to help me search to find it? I understand the concept of hit factor, but how do you estimate it? By watching other shooters? Or should I know roughly how long each of my actions take (i.e. 2 shots on 1 target moving 5 steps and another 2 shots, should I know my splits, transitions, movement speed etc)? Cheers, Ryan
  5. Tried this out today, only got three runs in before the rain set in! I know three is not quite enough for a proper benchmark, but it felt as if they were representative of my current ability. Run 1: 5.40s, 1 down, 5.90 total Run 2: 5.72s, 1 down, 6.22 total Run 3: 5.66s, 1 down, 6.16 total Average = 6.09s Average transition time = 0.501s PM sent!
  6. I'm in a similar boat, and looking to improve. I shot a club match last weekend and asked a mate to video me - turns out I slowly jog to the next shooting position, rather than sprint (which is what I thought I was doing)! So I realise I need to practise moving aggressively between shooting positions - I'd say get video'ed on a few stages and see where you're losing time.
  7. In NZ most of us pick up our brass as the cost of components is rediculous!! You're talking the equivalent of roughly USD$180 for 500 cases of 38 Super Comp!! But - most people tend to mark their cases, and everyone picks up everyone's brass and returns the brass to the rightful owner. However - shooting takes priority - followed by stage reset - so once the stage is reset the RO will clear the range and not wait for people to pick brass. This works well, and we tend to get 75% or so back from a match.
  8. Thanks guys - man this forum is awesome - so much info and so many helpful people! Cheers
  9. IMO - as long as you call the 2nd shot on the target you can move to the next during recoil - if you call a poor hit or a miss then settle the sights and fire a third.
  10. I've just been doing a bit of reading on this - agree with the earlier comment about head spacing off the case mouth - sounds dangerous should the 9mm slip forward off of the extractor and leave a gap between the breech face and the case - ruptured primers etc. makes me less keen to try it. Foxbat, how many rounds have you done this for?
  11. This sounds like an awesome idea for shooting Speed Steel using minor 9mm in my 38SC Open gun! Why does the extractor miss the rim on the 9mm? 9mm has a bigger rim than 38SC?
  12. Hi All, I'm currently away from home at university, and am looking for ways to practise without having my pistol with me. I am currently working on general fitness, but I'm wondering whether there is anything I can do specifically to improve my shooting. I have thought of eye exercies etc to try and improve vision; anything else you guys can think of? Any help would be awesome. Cheers, Ryan
  13. This is an awesome thread - anyone else think it would be a good idea to collate the links in this thread (and I'm sure there are others, dry fire comes up a lot!) into one thread that can be easily found? Those links are brilliant
  14. I like the idea - make people think a little bit about how to shoot it - carefully and slowly or blaze it and maybe miss... At the end of the day everyone shooting it is in the same boat (except maybe the .45 guys!) so the competition is fair. Just my $0.02...

    So, I'm an idiot

+1 on this. More trouble than it's worth on a competition gun. I found that if I got my grip nice and high on the beavertail I was actually disengaging the grip safety! Pinned it and now it's sweet. One less thing to go wrong.
  16. Thanks all for your input. Am keen to try the 115's and maybe back the powder off a bit. Will let you know how I get on once I get around to doing it! Cheers, Ryan
  17. Sorry to ressurect an old thread, but I am after advice on this rule. I have a flip out lever on my scope mount, like the 3-in-1 Double Alpha mount for table starts(I don't have enough posts to post links). I was recently informed (by a jealous non-open shooter!) that under this rule it would not be allowed! Am I allowed to use this? Cheers, Ryan
  18. Hi All, I am looking to load some 38 SuperComp rounds at a low power factor for speed steel. Up til now I have been using my 165PF IPSC Open loads! I have an STI Open gun, with a 3 port comp, and want a load that will make lots of gas to work the comp but want less recoil than my 165PF Open load. I have a recoilmaster so lighter loads should work, can reshape a different firing pin stop to help with slide speed if need be. My question is will I need to change powder and/or projectiles to load it lower, or will less VV N340 do? How empty can I fill the case and be safe? Cheers, Ryan
  19. Any tips on how to properly tune the internals of the mag?
  20. That was an excellent stage, If you tried to get an advantage on one part, you lost it on another. You definitely needed to know your strengths and weakness. Probably one of the best stages I have shot Do you have a stage layout that we can see? Always keen to try the interesting stages! Cheers
  21. +1 chirpy I had the same issue at our NZ Nationals 2 years ago. Had no idea what was going on - turns out the gunsmith had forgotten to put the dimple in the slide stop to catch the plunger. Pulled out the Dremel, added a little dent in line with the plunger (not too deep or else it is very difficult to use the slide stop when you need to) and had no more problems since. Ryan
  22. Hi All, My name is Ryan, I am 23 years old from New Zealand. I have been shooting IPSC Open Class for about 4 years now, and currently A grade by NZ standards. I have a background in Engineering, and I'm actually on here looking for information about machining my own STI 2011 style frames and slides. If anyone has done this before, or knows anyone who might have any help or advice, it would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Ryan PS. See you at the world shoot in Florida 2014!
