  1. Mobil 1, nothing but bullets down the barrel , it applies to all my guns from Infinity or AKAI custom to inexpensive Tupperware. For cleaning, acetone.
  2. My set-up includes all of those I am just trying to figure out how hard should I grip the gun...
  3. I was following the recoil control thread with interest, it seems to me that for non compensated guns everyone is gripping their gun really hard. Some people made an exception to this rule when referring to open guns. Assuming a good technique, what pressure are you using in your open gun grip? gripping like a hammer? Do you push down on the "*thumb rest [generic]*" or just lay your thumb on it? Having a dot that returns faster, has more to do with: gas, popple holes and the compensator design or a hard grip? Inexperienced open shooter wants to know...
  4. ok. no touching but close ...
  5. Sooo... If the briefing says "Toes on X" and nothing else, can I start with my hand on the gun?
  6. It depends on your set up.... I would start about 7.5 gr . I still have 12 lbs of SR 4756....
  7. Why cleared it? Anyhow. Stop the brass. Pull the handle when the alarm sounds you have 4 primers left (small primers). Cleaning? Maybe once a year....
  8. Yes, switched to open recently but same cocked and locked. Competition: Open 38sc ( my avatar) Carry 1: STI VIP .40 (don't carry very often, too bulky, com-tac infidel holster) Carry 2: Sig Sauer P938 (most of the time, com-tac infidel holster) Bug: Colt XSP (De Santis nemesis pocket holster) As you can see, only single actions for me...
  9. When I started reloading also used the Lyman manual and the Dillon videotape of BE reloading on a 650.
  10. Agree 100% Clays or N310 are better choices.
  11. Ya. At 10.5g on my Xl650 I have to slow it down a bit. I charge then try to put the bullet on b4 it indexes to station 3. I don't use a powder check. Look N see "is the case full? yep" that's it. It helps w powder spills. Loading 11g of VV N105 is really hard! Lol 10.5 is not bad at all.... Compared to the 11.6 of N105 I was using before. There is still some space left in the case, going slow and using the flat ball bearing mod under the shell plate helps. Also I am using Mr Bulletfeeder so the case goes uncovered for just one station. Reloading on an RL1050.
  12. Different chrono my first post (10.0 and 10.3) were recorded indoors with a Prochrono Digital and infrared screens. My last post (10.5 and 9.8gr) were recorded outdoors after last Sunday's match. Same brand different chrono owner. I am thinking of going with 10.5gr , in conversation with Akai this setup (shogun model) likes a PF of 172+.
  13. So we chronographed yesterday and here are the results: 38Supercomp VW 3N38 MG 124gr JHP WSRP OAL 1.235 Charge AVG STD PF 9.8gr 1325 11 164.3 10.5gr 1396 12 173.1 So it seems that the 10.3gr charge that I chrono last week was a mistake.
  14. Yes, it seems very odd, I was using 11.6gr of N105 and is highly compressed but 11.6 gr gave me more fps than 11.3gr. Why would this not be the case with 3N38? Will reconfirm this Sunday with another chronograph. I have loaded 10.5 and 9.8gr, will report back as how they behave.
  15. Thanks for the offer. I will be there.
  16. You might even try a little less than 10 grains and see if you get the same velocity. With so many holes and how slow 3n38 is, you're only going to get so much burn... I'd wager 9.8 will get you something very close to the same PF.Thanks that is a good idea.
  17. Will try 10.5 gr to confirm the trend, if PF remains at 171 will use 10.0 gr. in a couple of matches to see how it feels.
  18. Given that the primers were fine, I will try 10.5gr and see what happens...I know this gun needs a lot of gas.
  19. Frankly this gun has always shot very flat, I only shot 40 rounds and I liked the feel, I am just trying to get to the ideal load and stick with it. I am not an experienced open shooter. I just know I like how 3N38 (10.0 gr.) feels compared to 9.3 gr of HS6. I think it is flatter. It also "feels" better than 11.3gr of N105 which I shot in the same session and produced a PF of 172. Just experimenting....
  20. I am using Winchester small rifle primers.
  21. So I finally got my hands into some VW 3N38 to try in my Akai, using 124 gr MG JHP. I loaded 2 test batches: 10.0 gr and 10.3 gr.....and I got the same results !!???? Loads were weighted thoroughly in a Dillom electronic scale averaging 5 throws before loading the batch. Here are the results: 10.0gr 1394 1374 1381 1375 1371 1378 1380 1380 AVG 1379 PF = 171 STD = 6 10.3gr 1397 1374 1363 1378 1378 1377 1374 AVG 1376 PF = 171 Used Prochrono Digital with infrared led screens in an indoor range. Here is the top of the gun: Should I try 10.5gr?
  22. Anyone using Crisco... :roflol:Emm Fireclean
