  1. And it'd be a good use for those 10-rounders from gun-unfriendly states. Or 5-rounders made to keep the DFG happy.
  2. My original vision was using a steel target and a spotter, and the RO could just make tic marks to track the number of hits. Front load the iron sight guys in the squad, and repaint the target after each squad. (The club I shot at in TX used bright orange construction marker paint on the targets. Great for irons, and it comes in bulk packs.) I like your scoring idea.
  3. Actually, my original concept, to make it closer to the original British army drill, was to have the shooter start with 10 rounds loaded, and with 5 rounds in their extra mags. They can stack as many 5-rounders as they want. 5 rounds in the mag is easy enough to to a visual count. Or you could acquire a bunch of the limited capacity hunting type mags. That takes away any advantage for the guys with the big mags.
  4. Great feedback guys! I don't actually build stages for my local matches (I live too far away), just an idea that popped into my head. I love the variety of ideas that different people come up with, too. I did go and look it up, and the record is actual 38 hits , set in 1914 by Sergeant Instructor Alfred Snoxall. That's with iron sights of the non-aperture variety (the proper term for which escapes me.) I do find the idea that a 60 second stage is a long (time wise) stage. I think the shortest stage I've ever shot at a local match had a 45 second par time, and I've shot bunches with par times up to 300 seconds at CCC in TX.
  5. Was reading about the Enfield rifle and thought it might be an interesting idea for a stage, but can't quite figure the scoring. Setup: 12" circular target at 300 yards. Rifle starts with 10 round mag loaded, all reloads must be 5 round mags. (This simulates the Enfield's 10 round max capacity, and 5-round stripper clips.) Shooter has 60 seconds to hit the target as many times as possible. (IIRC, the record, with an Enfield rifle, is something like 36. That's shooting right there.) But how do you score it? Obviously, the more hits, the better, and everyone will have the same elapsed time. Ideas?
  6. I've been running a 1-4x for over a year now, but still, my best moment in 3-gun was at a local match running my Garand. 600 yard target, hearing PING! "HIT!" BEEP! all in a row, just like that. Damn that felt good. (Felt even better when only about half the squad hit that target, and I did it with a surplus gun, shooting surplus ammo and iron sights.)
  7. Because the guys who write the rules are old farts with weak eyes? (For the record, I will be officially over the hill in 5 weeks, but the eyes are still holding out.) Or because the standard .mil infantry weapon is a carbine with an M68 CCO (Aimpoint)?
  8. One of the local matches I shoot at is like that - the first squad to shoot a stage is good to go, those following are iffy at best. I recall one stage last month where, due to stage design, each of the long targets would get hit 4x per shooter (assuming they didn't just take the FTN). I was on the second squad to shoot that stage, and one of the targets (an MGM flasher) was totally invisible without a scope, and even then dang hard to find. The kicker? They were less than ~300m downrange. I would have been happy to run down with a can of paint, especially if I was shooting irons. (Of course, I'm evil, and use international orange construction marker paint, which tends to blend with scope reticles at times. Great for irons, though.)
  9. One thing I have found that works is paint the targets black and put a white backer behind them. You won't have to paint nearly as much as if you paint them white without a backer. Pat Totally agree, Pat. Heck, that's the same presentation they use at Camp Perry at 600 yards. Good enough for me.
  10. I have, in the past, shot a match with my M1 Garand...simply because I could. Because it was fun. I had an AR, with a 1-4x scope. Or an EOTech, if I wanted. Once I replace the firing pin, I'll probably bust out the Garand again, because it's fun. Even though the local club doesn't have any 'special' rules for He-Man/Heavy Metal (i.e. .30 cal rifle/.45 pistol only need 1 hit on cardboard). Why? Because PING!, that's why. Added: Oh, and .30-06 M2 ball works great on spinners.
  11. I may have to put that on my Wish List then...maybe a present for myself if I make the LTC promotion list in June.
  12. I know that CZs don't have near the user base of the 2011...but can anyone who has used both compare a 2011 to, say, a CZ SP-01 tuned/tricked out to a similar cost level? (I'll admit to having a soft spot for CZs. Of all my pistols, my favorite is my CZ-97B, aka "The Beast," which I plan on using in He-Man eventually. When I can afford .308)
  13. Careful with RIOs. You want to try a box before you buy them in bulk. They will not run in either my Nova or my Versa. The hull and metal casing are so thin that they expand into the large extractor groove and lock up in the chamber. The RIO buck and slugs seem to run fine in my guns. Just not the bird shot. I've run them just fine in my CZ-712 (and my 870, if that matters.) 7.5 and 8.
  14. So it looks like CZ has decided to make a 3-gun version of the -712. No specs given, but looks like a 22-23" barrel and a 9 round tube. http://www.gunnuts.net/2014/01/27/czs-new-3-gun-ready-shotgun/
  15. The OP said, in the first message on this thread, that they expected to post it 1 Jan, with a mail-in date of 1 April. Since the web site still has the 2013 application up, I was wondering.
  16. Sounds promising. Were the Remington 1145 or 1300? Were the Rio 1150, 1250, or 1280? In looking back through this mega thread I couldn't determine which recoil spring you are running. I realize my mileage may vary, but I am planning to order a variety of rounds to test with for when the new parts arrive. Thanks for the info. Checked the garage. Remingtons were 1200. Rios 1150. The two rounds of Remington SureShot Long Range #6 high brass also worked just fine. I use those for spinners.
  17. The Remingtons were cheap ones from Bass Pro that my kids gave me for Christmas. Not sure about the Rios. I'll check when I get home. When I first got mine, I went and got a box of just about every kind of target/skeet/trap I could find at the local Academy, Gander Mtn, and Wally World, plus Federal low recoil buck and Fiocchi low recoil slugs. Lubed the snot out of it with Slipstream lube and it ran everything with no issues. The one time I've had issues was with a box of Winchesters (white box, not AA) that I'm not sure where it came from, and I was just trying to get rid of it. Even those ran OK after I put more lube on.
  18. I ran 50+ rounds of Remington Gun Club shells through mine last weekend with no issues. I haven't had any issues with Rio's target ammo, either.
  19. Ran another 75 rounds through mine this weekend. One stovepipe, again with Winchester. Target loads from Remington and Rio both ran with no issues, as did the few rounds of Rem Sureshot long range #6 I used on the spinner.
  20. When I'm firing that much, I prefer to do it with a belt-fed.
  21. The beauty of driving...more ammo, spare guns. And if you're really cheap, you can sleep in your vehicle.
  22. TNGrumpy - I've checked the list. I'm #30. What do the symbols next to some of the names on the squad list mean? Division?
