    VP9 loads

I have said this elsewhere, but a 12b spring would awesome, would sure help keep the front end from diving so much with lighter loads. May not be legal for production, but sure would be nice. Just been using 124's at about a 130 pf.
  2. I had springfield P9 in 9x21, same issue, even more back when there was a 175 pf. I can't remember for sure but either Hornady or Sierra made a 124g JHP that allowed me to load far enough out to not get overpressure.
  3. Update....wow getting a simple spring into Canada seems impossible. HKparts hasn't got its export permit and HK Europe is not very friendly. There has to be a way to do this.
  4. Happiness is....discovering a 4lber in the back of your magazine... just prolonging the inevitable switch to others, but will make the transition less painful. Interested in CFE and Autocomp as they are the most reasonably priced and available.
  5. Thanks everyone for your feedback. As I am in Canada and our dollar doesn't buy as much as it used to, going to run with what I can get. We are paying $37-$45 per pound! if you buy singles. Good 'ol Unique and WSF will be on the top of my list. The physics/chemistry seem to be the same as with a .45, PUSH a heavy bullet, rather than SNAP a lighter one. 9mm is just scaled down and you don't have to worry as much about a tiny bit of powder in a huge case as in the 231 scenario mentioned.

    VP9 Experience

I know SS guide rods are available for the VP9, wondering if anyone has any intel on lighter springs? I think a 11-12lb spring would really help flatten it out.

    Fundamentals

I started trap shooting two years ago and love the mental aspect of "not missing" something that I still have to work on in IPSC, A,C...whatever as long as it is on the paper....What I have had to learn in trap is that to be "up there" - you can't miss, but not to stress about it. One bird at a time and that is it. Translating that back to IPSC, my scores have gone up and I drop way fewer points. Two A's at a time one target at a time. Its been great, still though try and "shoot the dot" with my shotgun sometimes, but get over that pretty fast now.
  8. Thanks everyone. If you all think there is a powder shortage in the US, try living north of the boarder. Anything really good/popular lasts for about 32 seconds and people are still in "hoarding mentality". I am pretty well versed in major loading principles, going back as far as the days of 9x21. Felt/perceived recoil/muzzle blast was weighed off against muzzle rise/comp effect. Going full circle, I am going to give standard div a whirl again, but a whole lot has changed in 20 years. So here is a question: is the trick in 9mm minor to get the highest volume/fastest burning powder, or the lowest volume/fastest burning powder?
  9. Seems TG is the preferred powder for 9mm minor, and your second choice would be?

    VP9 Experience

Just got a sfp9, and actually think the mag release is going to cure me of a problem I have had with 2011's. I hit the button and then get the gun sideways too fast sometimes and the mag hangs. Bad technique I know. In practicing with my HK, and since I have pretty long thumbs, the mag paddle isn't that big a problem and it forces me to maintain less side motion. Sure do love the way the mags eject too.
  11. Hey that is great. Just got one myself and going to give it a try. "getting back to the roots of the game". As I am sure you know you can get a SS guide rod assembly, and have pondered the same question.
  12. Hi All, Having shot IPSC open for almost 20 years I am revisiting the "p" in practical and giving production a try. Wow a lot has changed. Blade-tech and Comp-tech seem to be good choices, but I would like to know for sure what is legal for IPSC. I am pretty long in the arms and have had several shoulder injuries so hauling out of a bet ride/concealment type holster just isn't going to be fun. Thanks, DL
  13. IMHO the best .38 super powder other than VV is now gone. Has anyone found a good replacement? Will there be a replacement. I have heard about the latest copper fowling reducing powders, but they don't seem to replicate. H6-dirty and a bit sharp in the recoil pulse Longshot - meh, and drity Autocomp....hear good things ? Silhouette, seem ok in my 9mm major, but a tad snappy Sad, down to my last 4lbs of 4756 knew this was coming. I am sure others have felt the same. DL
  14. Yea, been shooting IPSC for almost 20 years and dabbled in other rifle sports and getting a "nice" shotgun to shoot sporting clays was always on my bucket list. I liked the idea in principle, golf with a shotgun and so I sent out my tenticles into the ether and a good 'ol fellow responded to my add for "wanted nice o/u shotgun". He offererd to take me to a little trap range to try out a 525 he had for sale. Gun didn't fit, but I sure had fun and I loved the mental aspect. Who would have thought that such a seemingly boring sport could be so engaging. And yea for some the reasons noted, it sure is an efficiant way to get some trigger time in. No fiddling about with target stands, brass, tape, timer and a heck of a lot easier on the 'ol arthritic joints. Prett soon I had a Win 101 sporting that I was doing "ok" with, but I was quickly realizing that there was a very good reason for the high rib on a dedicated trap gun. Next thing I know I have a Browing XT and discovering that cases of shotgun shells are a lot harder to smuggle into the house undedtected by the wife A round of trap is like shooting 25 one round stages and you have to always shoot an "A" - love it!
  15. lol.....well as much as I liked the 101, it wasn't a trap gun. Found that I wasn't able to keep my head up as much I would like with the lower rib and there is indeed a good reason for the high rib of a dedicated trap gun. Sooo sadly parted with the 101 and now shoot a Browning XT, 32" with adjustable comb. Had the intereting experience of thinking I was missing, but was just smoking the birds and nothing to track!
  16. Sooo I ended up with a like new Win 101 sporting.... First time out did 21,19,23,21 at 16y. Old timers were like "hey, what is that, I used to have that.....kicked like a mule". I think it has less recoil than a 525, points better, is straiter and in my research for something under 2k represented the best value. What I hope for is some head game training as I am/always have been my worst enemy when shooting IPSC pistol and I am really liking the challenge of keeping it all together while shooting a round of 25 trap. Thanks for the advice. DL
  17. Ok I know these have a reputation (at least where I come from) as being beater guns for the back of the truck or cabin, but I haven't heard anything catastrophically bad, and they seem well enough made. For less than $1,200 I can get a fully fitted new gun which seems almost too good to be true? Is it?
  18. I completely agree with this. Task-shifting is possible but usually both efficiency & accuracy suffer. "Full attention" is a dying craft. I've done 10-hour shifts as pharmacist-in-charge where I take everything as it comes (continuous interruption & re-direction of my thoughts), and shifts where I clump similar tasks into small piles and then jump on one pile at a time till it's done. Long lists of patient home meds, always riddled with nurse transcribing mistakes, get pushed to last. Checking IV's and hazardous drugs gets pushed to shortly before their delivery run-times. Text messages from nurses pile up at my printer until there's about 6-8 of them or 30 minutes goes by, whichever's first. Clinical dosing gets done when it's quiet or gets handed to the other clinical person if there is one. Brand new 1- and 2-line orders from MD's go first, they go fast, and they keep the work-queue looking manageable rather than dire. Newborn's, kids, and ER orders jump the line, those interruptions get allowed into my brain, not much else. Stubbornness about process and flow really pays off. Seen the numbers (we're a for-profit hospital, I have no choice) and the results are not even close. I accomplish far more and have fewer mistakes & do-overs using the triage/clumping method. In my experience the people who brag the most about multi-tasking are the ones who play with their phones and gadgets way too much. [rant: off] Thank you ! Very well put.
  19. Ok this is why I think 3 gun is really cool. I hope *please* that it doesn't get taken over by rules that insist on expensive gear thanks for posting !!!
  20. True, true, and true.... It just seemed like a slightly more elegant solution to slide mount.
  21. I have just joined the GSG club, and have an itch to build up a "nice" steel challenge gun. Wanting to know if anyone has any real experience with slide mounted sights or if I should just stick with the tried and true frame mount. IMHO I can't see how 32 grams will slow down the slide that much and seems to be a better option than adding almost 4 times that much to the gun for a cmore system.
  22. I ran a 9x21 back in the 175 days so am pretty sure I know how to read for pressure thanks. And yes with 9x21 loose primer pockets did occure, but when they did it was really easy to feel, and in most cases (as mentioned) the primer would just fall out. I do like the shake 'em up in a bag trick, hadn't thought of that one. Shooting mixed brass, so that is probably issue #1, and indeed loose pockets is the prime suspect, though on my 650 I am not feeling any difference between cases. Just wanted to see if/how common this was in the 9mm major world.
  23. I have a growing suspission that I have primers backing their way out in my 9mm major loads. Has anyone else experienced this? Any particular flavour of brass that is more prone to this than others? All loads are close to 165PF @ 1.165 with 124's so I am sure its not a pressure issue.
  24. Now that is a VERY interesting theory! Thanks, one more thing to check out.
