  1. Do you have a pic of the longest tube and the longest barrel together? What are the measurements? I just bought a 28" 870 and am trying to decide how long a tube I can fit on it.
  2. There is an obscure universal conversion tool that will work for any of these platforms. Most kids working at the big box stores don't know what they are, but if you keep asking enough people some old timer will know and point you right to them. People look at me like I'm crazy when I'm using mine, but I've gotten used to that look. It's a pencil. ;-)
  3. Yes. One day we will look back on this time as "the golden years". I'm trying to live it up while I can!
  4. I love the old warhorses - great video! Look to the old Highpower Rifle guys if you want to get faster at loading. The good ones won't even take the rifle out of their shoulder to do it. A good friend of mine was well known for his in the shoulder reload at Camp Perry, and set several records there with it. Unfortunately, he left this earth unexpectedly before I got a chance to learn it from him. It can be done though, and done well.
  5. I have the Leupold VX-HOG and am very happy with it. It is very lightweight (8.1oz) and simple - which was important to me, and the reticle is perfect for what I do. It is a 1.4-4x, not a true 1x, but for the price and weight it can't be beat. Full review is here: http://www.falfiles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=364941
  6. Interesting - I've never seen anyone mention parallax before, but it makes sense. When you say "the less expensive options have a lot of parallax", do you mean that they are set to the wrong distance? Or is it that the more exensive scopes are adjustable for parallax? How can one scope have "more" parallax than another?
  7. No - too easy. If I'm not challenged I get bored quickly. I make a point to seek out shooters bettern than me (not hard usually!) and shoot with them, and I make a point to seek out matches that challenge me and keep practicing and coming back until I can do it. I vote for more long shots. In Highpower 600 yds is considered "medium range". ;-)
  8. I'm just curious - these seem like such random numbers/lengths to put in a rule. Where did they come from?
  9. I like the sound of this match - can you tell us more? How many stages? What type (and distance) targets? How far do we have to hump all this gear? Is it a 100yd sprint in between stages, or a 3 mile timed ruck march (or a lazy saunter from one bay to the next)?
  10. I normally use CCI, but during the last shortage could not get them so I bought a couple thousand Winchester. Same issue - failure to fire with no other explanation. I'd never had a CCI do that, so I swore off Winchester and bought a bunch more CCI the next time I saw them. I hate to hear you had the opposite problem. Not sure if this just means that every primer company is shortcutting to make shipments, or if I'm shooting more now and every manufacturer will have failures eventually.
  11. I use Berry's, Rainier, and Zero 230gr RN in my G30 interchangeably with everything else the same (powder charge, die settings, etc.) and they all work fine. Zero has been the most accurate for me.
  12. Thanks to everyone for working so hard to put on a good match. I learned a lot and had a great time, and everyone was very friendly and helpful to a newbie -
  13. It doesn't matter - whatever boots you bring will become "muck" boots! Embrace the muck!
  14. Looks like we may be slogging through the mud Friday - should be fun! How's the drainage at the Rock?
  15. So far we have 1,2,3,5, and 6 - this clears it up perfectly! ;-) So do you think it's a bad idea with my non-free-floated FAL? I've tried it a few times and it sucks - but maybe I just need to practice more. Or maybe I need to practice position shooting more and forget about the stupid barricade...
  16. When I learned precision rifle shooting many years ago, it was a steadfast rule to NOT rest your rifle on any hard surface directly as the recoil would bounce the rifle unpredictably. If support was to be used, you'd always place something soft (a bag, or even your hand, etc.) between the rifle and the support to minimize this effect. But at 3-gun matches I see people setting their rifle handguard directly on hard support all the time. I haven't done any formal studies, but it seems to be working for them. Is that because: 1. My data is outdated and incorrect, and resting on hard surfaces is fine 2. Comped .223's don't recoil enough for this to matter 3. Free floated handguards mitigate the issue 4. 2 & 3 together 5. Targets in 3-gun are so huge precision doesn't matter Thanks for you help!
  17. Are there any events/festivities Sunday, or can I head home Saturday night? I'd hate to think it's all over only to find they're handing out Benellis like popcorn Sunday morning or something...
  18. Did this start out as the 20" Hunter? I wanted to do something similar, but was concerned it might not cycle well if I cut it back to 18".
  19. Every time I shoot around the left side of a wall, I shoot from the left shoulder - because I agree that it's a good skill to have. I used to think it was awkward, slow, and less accurate - but after watching some videos of myself I found that it only FELT slow and awkward. I actually made better hits faster than my strong side shoulder. Go figure...
