  1. I run a new style Holosight on my AR and an Older style on my SV Open Pistol. I love them both. The AR has a 1 minute dot and it is very very crisp. I have various dot sizes for the pistol, with 1 minute being one of them. I use the 1 minute for Steel and 15 minute diamond for IPSC. Here is something that I learned shooting a match this year that may or may not pertain to your situation. I was shooting our sectional championship. On the very first stage as I was shooting it appeared that the dot was fading away and then reappearing. To make a long story short, I had just gotten new perscription shooting glasses which were polarized. Fortunately, I was shooting with a professional photographer (thanks Nik!) who pointed out the problem right away. We went to the safe area and proved it. I could put my glasses in front of the scope and just by rotating the gun slightly the dot would fade in and out and become fuzzy then crisp. Fortunately, I had the old glasses and was able to finish the match without issue.
  2. Just wanted to say I appreciate everyone's input on this so far. Great info. Just for the record, I have an EGW build AR with a 18"ish bull barrel (20" including comp). For serious 3 gunning, I would use it. The mystique of the AK having grown up during the '80s (cold war), plus the reliability track record seems to be unchallenged by even our beloved 1911. Not to mention the fact that up until I moved a few weeks ago, I couldn't legally own one. One of the biggest disadvantages with AKs seem to be the short sight radius due to the mounting of the sight forward of the receiver. While the Valmet and Galil have fixed this, it is odd that looking at the custom variation, such as Krebbs, that they have not choose to mount the rear sight more... rearward. Also, when speaking of the 5.45, it is something I never considered - not making minor. Still I am more likely to go with 7.69x39. Sometimes it's just plain fun to play, and not worry 'bout the competitive factor. This past Sunday I shot limited minor with my Beretta 'cause I wanted to play with some 18 round Beretta magazines I had. (My STI .40 was pissed at me.) Shooting an AK while owning a tricked AR would fit with the same mentality.
  3. Is it the double / single triggers in general, or are you specifically referring to the Taurus? In other words, does a Beretta trigger feel different/better? Thanks.
  4. I shoot SSP with a Beretta Elite II or ESP with the same gun when I forget to take out the Hartz Guide Rod Also, play around in CDP with a Colt 1991A1 that's been very Jazzed up by EGW. Have a soft spot for that gun as it's the only gun I've won in 12 years shooting IPSC.
  5. If you still have some McCormick mags in .38 Super, consider just buying the Wilson inserts (Conversion Kits). They list for $7.95 in Brownells and can be had a couple bucks cheaper.
  6. I'll have to say I'm not. I shot several major IDPA matches this year, for the first time. I am just utterly stunned at how long they take to post the results. One of the IDPA's "Better than IPSC" points is that the scoring is so much easier. Then why do I have my IPSC results generally within 24 hours after the match, whereas with IDPA I wait close to a week.
  7. Note that all candidates have appeared in 3 or more movies. (Attempted ordered by appearance).
  8. I think Michael Ironside deserves honorable mention. Not as big as some of the other actors mentioned, but he seems to be a bad guy in every movie he's in.... even when he's cast as the good guy. (Edit) Personal quote from IMDB.COM "I like to play bad guys, since good guys are always beaten up several times during the movie. Bad guys are beaten only once, in the end." Oh, let's not forget Ahr Nold in the first Terminator!
  9. I am looking to purchase an AK-47 to play with in some three gun, tactical, and well just to have one. Which country makes the best AK at a reasonable price. Although I'd love a Valment cost is too much and I'm really looking for the "traditional" AK. I notice there are a lot of Romanian versions available, but I understand not to get one pre 2000 and to make sure the gas block lines up. A see a few Hungarian models available and some Russian ones. My though was that the Russian models may be the better models, but I was also considering be nostalgic and getting wood hardware. Most the Russian models seem to have plastic these days. What about Egyptian models? I head rumor that they are built well. Anything else I should look out for?? TIA!
  10. Big difference though, as the 11 rnds rule is actually being enforced. No one seems to care about the tungsten mag wells.
  11. I just read the rules and the FAQ on the 1911 society web site. I could not find two very important issues. 1. Are Trigger Jobs allowed, including an aftermarket (flat) trigger? 2. What about Beavertail modifications? Even though many higher priced "stock" 1911s come with them these days, my Colt 1991A1 had the traditional "tang" which was replaced with the Ed Brown high ride Beaver tail. This required modification to the frame and I'm wondering if it's allowed?

    Gun Lube

Might as well chime in too. FP10 is all I use anymore. Great stuff and very consistant. You can use it all year long (hot, cold, whatever). I bought what very well may be a life time supply at the 2002 Tri State Championship. The FP10 guy was there, nice guy and great prices.
  13. I really love my Bianchi holster. I have the regular model. It holds my SV open gun, single stack open gun (stock) and my long wide limited gun and 1991 .45 (using the arrendondo limited platform). It's nice to be able to easily switch from Open to limited and Modular Frame to standard frame by simply replacing small parts with no tools required (thumb screws).
  14. I guess it depends on if the Long Wide dust cover is considered an "Advantage". See rule 5.2.6 and 5.2.6.2. Even if it is, you should still be able to go from the Long Wide to the Standard dust cover if a gun breaks. At the 2002 Factory Gun Nats, my STI was hammer following so I wanted to switch to my friends backup. I had to notify the Range Master, then had to go to Chrono to make sure the backup was making major with my current ammo. The "backup" gun had a lightened slide where my original did not. It didn't seem to matter, though my argument would have been that I saw the lighter slide as a disadvantage for me (no competitive advantage). If I found it to be advantageous, my gun would have it as well.
  15. I wonder how many people have shot the Limited Nationals over the past several years with these "illegal" modifications?? I am sure most (if not all) were unaware of any infractions.

    Hurricanes

Yep, Hurricanes are bad. Not to mention that it hit during the Open Nationals (again) and people had to rush home to damaged homes. I can sympathize with them. I had to leave the Open Nationals in 1999 when Hurricane Floyd hit my home.
  17. Simon, Some suggestions: I'd try a NON long wide (standard frame .40). I think lighter may be better. Also, if you want to give a try at IDPA you should be able to use it in ESP division. You may need shorter mags (but you'd only need 3) and perhaps take off the magwell. And for IPSC, if you decide you like the long wide better, the short is still a viable backup. Also, I'd stick with the .40. Even for steel, you'd be amazed at how light you can go and how soft it can shoot. As for difference, I don't think the weight will throw you off hardly at all. They are the same grip and same angle type, so the difference in feel is minimal. Sights, I'd stay with the Bomar. Fixed sights are for combat guns, adjustable (when available) are better for competition. What is appealing to you about the fixed sights? The Bomars are generally wider, which is a disadvantage, but it is not big deal to have them trimmed down. BTW: I wish my STI was not a long wide anymore. The standard frame .40s I've tried handle better and are less front heavy. -- Bucky.
  18. Can anyone share approximate price per mag? How about turn around time? TIA.
  19. Anyone know what is different between Beretta and Taurus 92 models (92FS and PT92 respectively) such that they take different magazines and are not interchangable? Different mag catch cutout? If so, anyone know how different? Can one be modified to fit the other? TIA.
  20. I tried the search again, this time removing the space at the end of the number (copy paste error) and it came back. Unfortunately, they are sold out.
  21. Thanks for the tip. I do a search by that part # and nothing comes up. I try to do a search. Depending on what I put in the search criteria, either it is too narrow and nothing is found, or I get a message that more than 200 records returned and prompts me to narrow my search.
  22. Well, a ramped barrel is something you want in a .38 super. It allows a more fully supported chamber than the traditional frame ramp. It also seems to feed better with the smaller round. I think the problem is the 17 pound spring! Hell, that's more than I run in a .45. Way back I was running a single stack springfield .38 super in limited. I was shooting a 145 PF and using an 11 pound spring. Even for heavier loads, I'd suspect 17 to be a bit much.
  23. G23?! Shooting a compact model at that. Talk about Macho!
  24. The gun actually came with "Target" Grips. Darn grips are about the same as you would find on an early S&W Model 29! They're bigger than the gun. I thought the stock grips for this were small and outlined the frame. Now it has the Pachmayar's, but still they hang down about an inch lower than the frame. Looks like EricW's advice may be the way to go. Don't have a belt sander yet. Maybe dremel and hacksaws.
