  1. mag pouch......you have plenty of time for mag changes. WHen you use a mag pouch, you load like loading a pistol....finger extended goes where you point your finger. When you load cinched mags, where is your finger??? AND you will tend to fumble your reload more often......why??? becasue we never practice. You have more experience, loading from a mag pouch.....buy one....use it.
  2. didnt see it on their website....maybe I am blind.
  3. Probably been posted before.....I just can't find the info. So where on the net can I get these?? Thanks in advance!!!
  4. The stock hammer will work just fine with the JP trigger......you may need to use the stock hammer spring....however, you will still achieve the same crisp trigger, even if it is a little heavier (4-4.5# vs 3-3.5#). If you rework the stock hammer and trigger.....you will probably get less pull....but will probably 'feel' all the take up. And with no overtravel stop, feel a very mushy trigger. I would rather have a heavy crisp triger anyday than a light trigger with 'creep'
  5. Yes....JP does now carry a gas block that will fit under the hand guard....something else they need to get in the website (Yes, I am diggin and poken at John Paul....he doesnt read the forum.....but he'll find out). Actually, I understand that he is in the process of upgrading his website now. As for the PIC above....yes, that is the first design of that handguard, they ended up going to a nicer 2 piece design. NO.....I do not work for JP
  6. OK.....best of both worlds here. Call JP....order the Carbine Handguard.....and then ask them about the extention they have for their carbine handguard, that they are NOT advertising on their webisite yet. This way, you will be able to use your post sight AND have a full length Handgaurd AND have picatinny rails!!! JP seems to think of just about everything......just maybe a tad slow getting it on the website Tell them Tim sent ya!!
  7. My mistake.....wide bodies look as though they can be used......just not the SVI's, STI's oops.
  8. Can you say Hesse Arms??? Stay away
  9. True dave....BUT.....the rail is lower on the sight block than the reciever......and at the 45 degree offset, not only with the front sight be lower, it will be off in windage as well. Hopefully you will have enough adjustment to compensate for that.....if not.....I would go off the tube instead of the front sight.
  10. You are correct......the front and rear will need to be the offset the same or you will have problems out at varing distances.......with any AR sight, you already have to compensate for height on targets at 10yards vs. 40yards.......would be a pain to throw in windage at those distances as well. It is a good concept........maybe someone needs to make offsets to correct the alingment issue.
  11. Looking at the pics you have Dave......is the front sight centered over the bore??? it appears that it is not.
  12. looks like a spendy set up for a short range sight intended to be used for less than 50yds. I did a lot of shooting with the JP sight and even though some feel it is too low to the bore, the concept was for a quick aquisition sight for short range targets. I currently have one on my He-Man rifle, and am then able to use precision iron sights for longer targets. That being said.......for targets out to 50yds.....what precision is needed before you need to go to your primary sights? Keep in mind, the name of the game here is speed for short range targets while keeping an acceptable accuracy. I have done some testing shooting larger targets out at 100yds and found that offhand using the short range site, I was able to hit a 10 inch target very consistantly......something I would not recommend using in competion (using a short range sight for 100yd targets). but at targets out to 50yds I was able to keep all shots in the "A" zone. at shorter distances and at wide open targets I was able to use the sight as more of a reference point and get the speed up between targets and shot to shot. It just seems to me that for optics shooters.......why would you want to put a peep on as your secondary sight for short range targets as opposed to a notch and post? i say this only because when I am shooting my iron sights (primary peep sight) I went to a notch and post to speed up target aquisition for my secondary sights. As for sight radius.......I am not sure if that is THAT much of a factor when dealing with what we are talking about here. YES.....longer sight radius does mean more accuracy, however, again....we are talking targets out to 50yards max for this sight system and you are shooting a much more stabile weapons system than a pistol. I guess if you are looking for longer sight radius, thats cool.......and we could argue that one all day. I think though that the choice of a rear sight can and will affect the speed at which you aquire targets. I opted for the JP as it is very light weight, and a little low profile......I also use an ace butt stock with out the foam so I can get my cheek down that extra 1/8" inch lower. There many ways to skin a cat, thats for sure......some one came out with a similar design only longer, higher and a little more weight. This yankee hill concept seems very doable over all.........but SPENDY!!! And for what you are shooting at......you may want to look at the costs involved and just what IS acceptable accuracy/speed at short range targets before you would use your primary sighting system. Just my $.02 worth........not to argue.......just something to think about.....your mileage may vary and probably will. Whats great is that there are lots of options out there to fit many needs.
  13. Having shot He-Man with whimpy loads and all......I guess I would have to say, lets keep it He-Man (I no longer do the whimpy PF stuff......but gaming IS my nature). I guess the thing that concerns me more is that there is a growing inconsistancy between the big 3 gun matches as far as equipment goes. I would have thought the opposite would have happened, personally As it stands right now......for a guy to travel around and shoot He-Man at these matches.....he need to change his equipment out to be 'competative'......a single stack pistol with no bull barrel with 8 and 10 round mags, maybe a double stack and an array of magazines. A pump shotgun, a semi-auto.....note....some rules state start with 9 rounds, some state 9 round capacity. Even the rifle.....as far as the comp goes, one match allows these to be bigger than 1" dia. Also, keep in mind...this is not limited to the He-man division alone for these matches So whats the simple answer???? Vote? Talk amoungst the MD's? Maybe a new organization? Hmmmmm....wonder what direction the thread will take now Tim
  14. Not only is the 590A1 faster to reload.....you can grab 6 shells at a time as well......and dont tell me about haven little hands......those that know me, know I dont have the biggest hands on the block but I can load the 590 blindfolded I did put a +1 extension on my 590A1 and, mine did come with screw in chokes, so I was able to use Ruger extended choke tubes (I think those are the ones that fit). I had it all legal for the old rules of the 21" barrel tube 1" beyond and I could hold 9 in the tube which I personally thought was a plus....but it appears the rule is going bye bye. I also put ghost rings sights on it......but if I had to do it again, would just go with rifle sights. One other thing about the 590A1........smooth the action. and open up the area that you stuff the shells in with a file, dremel tool or if you can mill it, so much the better. You can REALLY open it there to make reloading easier (actually, you should do that with any shotgun) Tim
  15. Well put Sledge, I know it was a hard line to say. And thank you Mr. Moderator. I suspect JP is aware of any problems and working to get them resolved as well. I've helped behind the scenes at the last 2 matches, was just going to shoot this year, but couldnt make it in the end. However, next year, oh who knows what I'll be doing for the match......but I will be involved. This match will survive Joe....you guys made sure of that this year. Tim
  16. Being color blind......I have found that the rose colored (pink or what ever color they have been called) work best for me. I shot alot of sporting clays as well......and the lens really make the orange birds stand out like flames. Also......I would hesitate to get a dark lens. The way I understand it is this can make your iris (the black part??) larger and can actually increase your reaction times.......and I need ALL the reaction time I can get. NOTE......I am NOT a doctor.....so if some can better explain this, please do. The cool thing about the lens I use, I can wear them in any light and have worn them in dark houses as well with out any problems. The brand I use??? Bolle' Limit with a perscription lens, and had to really shop around to find a place to cut that color for me in the small town I live in. They seem to be a great wrap around style that I can also use for 3 gun with no problem. Tim
  17. The Tri-Gun Challenge was great. The staff at DPMS went over the top again this year setting it up. The RO's were nice, helpful and kind. The RM did an excellent job as well. Overall a very good match. I believe there was only one DQ, due to a round being put over the berm....pretty cut and dry when that happens. I pretty much pooched the entire match, but had a good time anyways. Found out this old man can still run (there was a stage where you had to sprint about 75yds). I rather liked that! The COF's were simple (not not easy!!!)........the shooter provided the challenge and I rather liked that as well. No one on our squad complained at all.....and over all it seemed like everyone was having a good time (out side of maybe the way they were shooting). I will be going back next year for sure. Tim
  18. Well......Mike.....your assumption may just be corect. Their mag did infact hiccup today (made a brown spot in the bed, if ya know what I mean)......no, Daniel Horner was not shooting it at the time. So they went to their back up mags and seem to be doing well.
  19. Hey.....the Army team is shooting one squad ahead of us and yup, same thing......all 3 using the same mag......no graphite ( well not much anyways). Working fine, no hicups (so far). I saw this post before the match, so when I saw them all using the same mag I had to aske some questions......no they have not taken it apart and when I asked that, the one guys eyes opened up and said, it was NOT to be taken apart I also asked if they ever put graphite in it......and they replied, every once in a while, the thing is sealed, where is all the excess graphite go? in the bottom, we shake it around, it gets to where it needs to go. Well......3 or four matches.....all 3 guys using the same mag..no hiccups....whose gonna argue with that???
  20. Just got home from the first day of the match......pretty much pooched Stage 6 (battlefield) which consisted of 14 paper rifle targets, 6 rifle plates....5 pistol paper and snot pot full of pistol steel at the end of it all......simple course, but challenging. Daniel horner smoked it in 46 seconds and some change I believe. Stage 7 (atv trouble) was also a rifle/pistol stage (that I also sucked %$# on as well) 17 rifle paper and 15 pistol paper. Ya know.....maybe I should pick up a pistol a little more often than once every 6 months. The neat thing about stage 7 was it was run between 2 bays with a little bit of running involved. Stage 1 was a shotgun stage, and I am sure you will hear alot about it......bottom line is.....it was a fun stage and the shooters definatley provided the challange. There was a bunch of ways to shoot it. even though you were standing in one spot the entire time. It was my best stage of the match so far and I believe I will be about 80% of the winner for that stage, so I am happy. I have 2 more shotgun stages to shoot tomorrow and then more rifle after that. IF my pistol and rifle rocked like my shotgun, I'd be really happy.....again....think maybe I should practice or is it over rated??? So far I am having a blast!!......Randy and the guys from DPMS did a great job settig this up and Bob Mills and his RO staff are great as well. Everyone has been up beat and the atmosphere has been great. I'm sure more will chime in as the time permits......but so far......hats off to DPMS for a great match.
  21. Ok....I'll chime in here. I know that if you buy all the parts to make a JP upper.......then you have all the parts that make a JP. However......you did not have the craftsmen at JP put that assembled upper together. I know anyone can put together an AR15 from parts........BUT......there are few tricks of the trade that those guys from JP do that makes their assembled uppers stand out from ANYONE elses assembled upper. There is a reason why JP will not sell a stripped lower to anyone. JP Rifles are not kit guns....never have been, hopefully never will be. Be rest assured (by the way) if you ever buy a JP Rifle, be it a JP15 or a CTR-02......it is a genuine JP Rifle. I am somewhat suprised that someone is putting together upper assemblies using complete JP parts, save the upper......it is infact a heck of a complement to JP Enterprises, IMHO If I had the choice of buying a complete upper assembly made from JP Parts vs a complete upper assembly actually made by JP and for what amounts to very close to the same price.......I will go with the JP Factory built upper.......it would be well worth it. As to what is better? the JP-15 upper or CTR-02 upper......hmmmmmm tough one. Depends alot on what you want to do with the upper. Do you want the strongest aluminum upper on the market? with the ability to mount an ACOG right on the upper with the built in interface? Do you want the best damn looking upper on the market??? then your choice is clear.....the CTR-02. Do you feel you need the forward assist (an overkill for a long ago problem) and a dust cover? Not going with an ACOG? Want a mil-spec upper.....again, your choce is clear......the JP-15. As for accuracy......either are the same, both are put together with the same diligence for fit of parts and for overall down range accuracy.....both use the same barrels, both can use the same bolt cariers. When you are talking JP......its all about choice......and you WILL get the best upper availible on the market. Sound like a shameless pitch from a guy that works for JP???? Yeah....it does, only I dont work for John anymore. But I still know how things are done there and still use the equipment and still have complete confidence in the product.
  22. No brass deflector??? Do you have like one of the first ones? The CTR-02 comes with a brass deflector. I have an 18" light wt model with the aluminum LMOS.....shoots like a dream, very accurate out to 300yds and beyond. Now I have a 1x9 twist and if I was to do it all over again would get the the 1x8 twist. OK.....those that know me, may know that I am also a little biased on the Rifle as well. But you are getting a very well built piece of equipment that is VERY robust and able to be configured into just about anything need you have for 3 gun very easy. Tim
  23. Bob is a great guy. He will do VERY well as the RM for the Tri-Gun challenge. One of the top shooters in Minnesota, president of one of the local clubs. Has worked numerous large matches including the 1st Tri Gun Challenge and the 2005 RM3G. He has a lot of experience and is an extremely fair person. The guys at DPMS should put on a great match this year!!! I am switching over to tactical scope, as i am getting old and the eyes are havin problems seeing them itty bitty targets out at the farther distances. And....good to hear Cheryl and Rod will be there too!!!
