  1. Actually there is third possibility. You make any required changes to the stage and then require a re-shoot for any competitors that have completed the stage before the changes. Shooter left town and can't re-shoot, unfortunate but that shooter gets a zero on the stage. Doug I agree with both Pat and Doug here. If the stage is shot 'wrong' you can either re-shoot or zero and more specifically who were you competing against? There was no peer pressure, you shot under possibly better (or worse) weather. You didn't have the disadvantage of having to wait long periods of time between stages. You maybe shot each when the light was right. No one should shoot before the RO Squads.
  2. Actually what he had was a Quad Coupler. The two center mags were loaded and were probably 30 rounds, the two outer mags were unloaded 40 rounders. He actually made it a point that it was a cool way to use mags instead of a bi-pod to skirt the rule. Had he loaded the two additional mags he would have actually been ok!.
  3. Here's one; No one, I mean NO ONE gets to shoot the match before the RO Squad! There have been a number of times where a sponsored shooter has had the opportunity to shoot the match at the completion of set-up, a day before the ROs shoot. Seems OK at first, but when full squads then shoot a stage and certain logistical or safety issues or competitive issues crop up, the match has been shot, the early shooter is not there to reshoot so we have two possibilities, toss a stage at the beginning of the match or shoot it as is. Shooting it as is has in the instances I am aware of cause that stage to be noticeably slower in resetting and set-up. No one should be THAT important.
  4. And the above is what we do at my home club(s) We have a twice monthly indoor 'Practice Match' for USPSA where in a new shooter gets about 90 minutes of lecture/classroom time with the rules scoring and history, then they get a live fire safety check to see if they can actually manipulate their firearm, in this case a pistol only, and then they are mentored through a 4 stage match. At our outdoor regular matches we can't do the 90 minutes so we do a much abbreviated version then the live fire safety check, then they are mentored through the match by the senior people on their respective squad. This has worked very well and we've introduced hundreds of people into USPSA shooting this way. Those that are not or that we are not comfortable with are not sent away, but are encouraged to shoot our various steel matches where movement is reduced or eliminated giving them the opportunity to learn to draw and engage targets. 3-GUn we only run a few times a year and we do essentially the same thing. BUT, this is at the CLUB LEVEL. we have time and there is little on the table so the shooters don't feel the burden of mentoring as they might if they were shooting for a new rifle or other prizes. Major three-gun should somehow and I surely do not pretend to know how, but there needs to be some sort of vetting of new shooters. Are you a classified USPSA/IDPA Shooter? Cowboy Action? Even maybe Steel Challenge. I do not have the answer, but while bringing in newbies is critical to our survival, so is surviving and some newbies (and a few not so newbie) could be a threat to that!
  5. I agree wholeheartedly with #2 above I would make it #1 in bold. There is little that is scarier than a first timer 'that knows everything since he read it on the internet' shooting a USPSA match except the same guy deciding that 3-Gun is where he wants to be! Compound this by not only not having shot an action match, but toss in I just got this Rifle/Shotgun/Pistol last week and haven't shot it yet. Now #1 above we can MAYBE fix with proper match management and so long as we don't scare them off with the new to shooting 'competitors'. None of us like getting swept!
  6. Before I spent the bucks for a Citori I tried out a lot of OU SGs. The Red Label was actually the first i tried. A buddy had one, I shot it and was going to just buy one. Then I started reading about fit. I'd always only ever shot Pumps and Autos. Well that opened my eyes. I picked up every OU I could remotely afford and none fit well. Then I happened on a store that had a Citori XS Special in stock. I tried it and it came right up the way it should. I hemmed and hawed a bit but in the end I decided that if I was going to spend money on a SG, I might as well get one I would not regret. So I ponied up the $$$ and bought the Browning. It has served me well. I am by no means an expert Shotgunner but I have been learning. FIT is the #! thing. Don't care about engraving, gold plating, the look of the wood. If it don't fit, it will not let you do your best. All that said, you also need to consider what it is you are planning on shooting and whether you are looking to be a 'real competitor' or just shooting for fun. Same here as any sport. If you want to have fun, an all-around SG such as a 30" Citori, the Red label, a Beretta or just about any gun that fits will do. If you are looking to go out and make this your shooting sport, then you need to look at a specialty gun, Trap? You will probably want a Trap Gun, Sleet, Skeet, SC, same thing. If I could have fit the Red label I would probably have bought it and saved myself about $2k. But if it doesn't fit, you just spent $6-700 or so for another safe queen.
  7. You mean I have to clean my Stoeger?
  8. Just my opinion, but dry ice is probably too cold and one does have to be a bit careful not to touch it. A cooler with a couple cold packs if it gets really hot. Usually just keeping the Nooks and Timers out of direct sun. When in use it doesn't seem to be a problem, the issue is usually when the Nook and Timer are left lying out on a table just baking. On a few occasions when we have had to, we've started up a car, turned up the A/C and held the offending piece of electronics up to the blast. That has the ancillary effect of also cooling off the attending range officer.
  9. We have a Plastic 'Ammo' box for each stage. it has the stapler, tape, a pen, a wrench, staples and a few odd bits and pieces. We ask people to 'PLACE' not 'TOSS' the Nook and the Timer in the box when they are done on a stage. Keeping the units out of direct sunlight seems to do the trick for the most part. Two biggest issues we see with the nooks is DUST and water. If your Nook is acting funny, you touch the 8 and get a 1 and similar, try lightly blowing it. Just put it up to your lips and blow along each edge, your Nook will love you for it. As alternative, I have purchased some small paste brushes, the kind used for soilder flux and also some slip on erasers like we used to use in school to slip over the opposite end of the brush so as to allow its use as a stylus. And with this I am done. (for now)
  10. Shade! and if there is an issue, icepacks.
  11. Thank you all. I think this only occurs on the original group of nooks so I'll see if I can't follow Cha-Lee's instructions to put tis back to sleep Funny thing is that it never popped up before.
  12. To elaborate a bit more, what can be seen if the NST is held at the correct angle is an X in a circle to close the menu and a couple of arrows. I have not played around with this since the match, I may try over the weekend just to see if I can call it up and also what it does, My question is, has anyone else seen this and why does it occur? It only happened on two of the NSTs, but it does keep you from running PS until it is closed and I think I had to reboot to get it to stay gone.
  13. OK, never saw this before. When attempting to enter scores a 'Ghost Menu' appears about 1/2 way down the right side of the screen. I think it is something to do with a 'super user' but it is only barely visible, has to have the NST held just right to see it. There is an exit 'X' that will close the menu, but it kept popping up on one unit. When visible 1or active you could not enter scores, it kept bouncing you around the screen. It appears to have ceased after a reboot, but I will look at it again tomorrow. 14 hour mach day, I am too tired to put out the gear. newest version of PS 1.2.30
  14. 962000014 70230 UNIVERSAL SLUGGER FIRE SIGHT $ 27.05 from Brownells This is a 'Universal' sight that clamps around the rib. It fits several rib widths and is adjustable for windage and elevation. When I get around tuit I am planning to send my Stoeger out to have a sight milled in, but for now this works very good.
  15. Based upon a couple comments in the past few... 4MOA Targets to a maximum 18", this is a Metric USPSA target. It would cover targets out to 450 yards. Full size Metric at 600 yards is a doable shot, but it is only available on a limited number of ranges. Fail to neutralize a target, Zero a stage? A little rough, but it would be fair. You might loose a number of competitors due to this. Bonus targets are a bad idea as is too small a penalty for misses. They encourage leaving targets unengaged and deliberate missing. This is not what the sport is based upon. As for the crews resetting targets, FNH does it, but I can assure you, none of the crews looked remotely like College Girls.
  16. FNH Championship. Targets may not be painted, but ALL resetting is done by Staff! I know, I've Ro'd and CRO'd all but the first match. Great venue, great schedule for shooters.
  17. Stages should be set up so that in what might be expected to be the worst lighting and weather conditions, the targets will be visible with the naked eye and able to be engaged with iron sights. Generally this would mean any of several of the ideas posted above, essentially the 4MOA limit and arguably paint between squads, although the other side of that is never paint, shot targets usually are gray, so start all targets painted gray and go from there. If one can see the 16" gray target posted out at 400 yards without binos, then we are good, if the targets are visible only because you can see the flash card above it and you are simply aiming under the card, your targets are technically not visible and therefor should have no penalty attached! This is a sport or a game, you can define it either way. it is not real, it is a one way range. So competitive equity comes into play. I would almost stand for a rule where there is an upper limit to range. Yes many people do shoot rifles with scopes that would allow for 600 yard and longer shots. Most of the competitor pool cannot practice at those ranges, many have never had the opportunity to fire even one shot at 600 plus yards. There are matches where precision shooting and finding your target is the name of the game, 3-Gun is NOT that game. We are a 'Run-N-Gun' sport, some short stuff, some middle stuff a bunch of medium long 250-300 and a couple shots out to maybe 400. After this you are now talking DM and Sniper match. Maybe a side match might be offered for those that want to try their hand at especially long range targets and being able to locate targets spread out in a field with no markers, but it isn't 3GN, or any other brand of Multi-Gun I am aware of. I'll now retreat to my bunker and done my flame suit.
  18. So, where does one get a Wi-Fi router that will cover a range? I would really like to be able to sync every 10-20 minutes as the day progresses. From our stats trailer it is probably under 100 yards to any location that the nook is likely to be in, but only just under. Also we would not have internet access, only our local wifi. And just to make it a little more interesting, we have a solar array charging a couple 12v batteries, no 110 power unless I add an inverter and a couple more batteries.
  19. If you can find them, Nook Simple Touch is great. VERY LONG Battery Life. Only issue we have had is Dust. Get yourself some brushes to clean the edges of the screen and no problem, Actually you can just hold them up and blow across all four edges.
  20. There are some really fantastic places to visit, but I have to admit, I stick to the main areas, get in and get out. Rockefeller Center The NY Public Library Bryant Park Grand Central Station The Museums The new and much cleaned up Times Square Macy's at Christmas Radio City, take the back stage tour. See if you can do that when you can get to the actual stage workings. Not really a place I need to or want to be in more than very occasionally.
  21. 1.2.30 I need to update 14 Nooks and get then all on the same version once again. Am i good to go on .30? BTW apparently my IPad updates and doesn't always tell me. The newest version over on IPad seems to work well, has a different look but I think I am liking it.
  22. NY and NYC are two different planets in two different dimensions, sadly both ruled by the same evil overlords. Upstate NY is a beautiful place with wonderful people. NYC is actually a nice place to visit and has some really nice people, The museums and much of the architecture is worth the pain of going there. Sadly the 5 counties plus the bordering counties and parts of CT overshadow the rest with their utopian/socialist/extreme left viewpoints and Upstate suffers. If one could only cut along the dotted line and tow the City (and certain parts of SW CT and NE NJ) out to sea. So the answer to your question, New York Maybe? Is WHY?????
  23. If you need a pair of good binos to call the hits, the targets are too small to be engaged with iron sights! One could make the argument that all targets should be full sized Metrics and that when they are up close, they represent targets that are up close and when they are far away, they represent targets that are far away. If every match venue had the facilities to run stages out to 500 yards this would maybe be OK, but we do need smaller targets for essentially two reasons, first is that most ranges can't hold 500 yard shots so we need reduced targets to simulate distance, second is that all wide open full size targets frankly wouldn't be very challenging. 6" plates at 100 yards are a challenging shot be it with Irons, a Dot or a scope. Especially if they need to be engaged offhand after a short run. This brings us back to the 4MOA target. 4" at 100 yards is not an easy shot! and 16" at 400 yards is at least doable. AND seeable! Just my additional $0.02 here.
