  1. AR gets my vote you could build a lower with two uppers for that price. I've built real basic M 4 type AR's and sold for $650, that's a basic entry level. I built and sold a DPMS Mini SASS clone for $1,200 . You could pretty much build what ever you want in an AR for $2,000.
  2. Wow I fell off track on this topic. I just took a peek at 3gunnation.com which forwarded me to beta.3gunnation.com and was going to come post how awesome it looked. LOL I got beat to it. You guys are FAST! I checked my DVR too and it's set to record... I am such a dork!
  3. When logging in, there is a check box that says "remember me" or something to that effect. I logged in every day last week, with that box checked by default, but it never remembered me. Finally a day or two ago I decided to uncheck the box and recheck it and in doing that, the website has now remembered me. I just thought I would pass that along. ie8, windows Vista
  4. Turning down work is a very hard thing to do, especially when it's paying work. It's not so hard when it's "next to free". However comprimising ones' injtegrity is a slippery slope of which it's nearly impossible to recover.
  5. Welcome. I am in the same area (Niles).
  6. Sorry. I wasn't necessary trying to argue, just trying to point out that contractors aren't all living high on the hog. I'll butt out now. I'll definetly stay away from this section of the forum in the future since I don't agree with that rule either.
  7. I got my iPad for free and it's worth what I paid for it. Garbage, Junko. Sorry I don't have any advice but it is a soar spot for me right now. First thing I won my whole life and I would have been happier with a can of garbage American beer.
  8. I run a roofing company. I can tell you that a $300 bill is cheap. I mean think about it for a second, Sunday's and Holidays are over time. For service calls I charge a minimum of 2 man hours. The part may be $25 but what about shipping and/or transportation of the part to your location. At the end of the day, even if they ripped you off, what for maybe $50? In my area a normal hourly rate for a M.E.P. service tech is about $90 an hour and $1.5x on over time. Materials are usually marked up anywhere from 20-100%. I understand, you probably had that $300 ear marked for some other project, I am right there with you buddy, money is tight! But seriously $300 aint that bad.
  9. I have the Burris Fast Fire and I like it but it is very small for the AR and I just found out they make a shield for it http://chicagogunsmith.com/catalog/picatinny-protector-fastfires-p-43339.html I don't intend to use it for competition however. FWIW I am in love of the Eotech with FTS magnifier for some reason.
  10. Tom for me closed membership is very bad news. Personally, not trying to be mean or crude, but I think it's stupid. How else can you grow your membership if you don't let new people try you out. I'm even willing to pay a premium for use of the facilities, but to each their own I suppose. I'll try to check you guys oout for one of the matches though.
  11. Darnit, the forum is acting up and my reply got eaten. I am not a "professional" gun smith in the fact that it's not my full time job. Though I try to think always like a professional, and do gunsmithing as a side job, real basic stuff, AR's mostly. I give each customer a claim form when they leave the item with me. On that form it says I'll keep it for 60 days after completion of repair and after 60 days storage fees will begin to apply. I don't think that is unreasonable. Any repair shop of any item would do similiar. I think that after a fair ammount of time the business should be able to liquidate the item. It's not realistic that they should hold onto the item a year or forever. Square footage of real estate costs money and beleive it or not a firearm laying around takes up space. I beleive that the customer must be made aware of this policy upfront however, and should be printed on any repair/claim forms. FWIW I have never had to hold onto anything I worked on longer than a week after it was done. Most people pick it up the next day. If I had a higher volume this would be a bigger concern. Personally i would think 120 days is more than reasonable, but I am glad to know there is an ATF law and will try to find that if I can.
  12. I'm always open to trying new things and new ranges. I'll make it a point to give you guys a try. Is this a membership only club? Are you open to the public for "plinking"? I went to McMillers shooting center, was a long drive, I liked the facility, I hated the drive.
  13. I've been checking the 3gn website too but no posted 2011 tv schedule or even I don't think many event dates. I also have been checking my tv schedule for ATT Uverse and Uverse has no information for it. I'm anxiously awaiting its' return. I really wonder why they are so far behind on the website update?
  14. That's excellent information. I had a similiar problem with one of my Pmags not catching on a closed bolt. Come to think of it it's always happened on a full mag and I didn't count to see if there were 31, just loaded until it was full, often removing a round has fixed the problem so it's good to know. Next time I'll pay more attention and see what the real cause was if it happens again. I just assumed the mag was defective.
  15. IL resident here too. North side of Chicago. I gotta drive an hour to get anywhere good to shoot Excellent site Less. I'm bookmarking it! I'll be at the Bristol Action shoot August 7th if I get a holster and extra mags in time.
  16. Welcome and congrats on the kid. What part of WI? Yeah diaper changes, about 10 times daily for the next 18 months, I'm right there with ya.
  17. Hi from Chicago IL, I'm new to firearms competitions, but not new to firearms. I'm gearing up right now as money allows and hopefully will be ready to shoot my first 3 gun next month. It's all just a matter of what the funds allow. I live in the Chicago area, actually literally right across the street from the Chicago border. My profession is a State of Illinois Licensed Roofing contractor. Happily married, Father of two, and future Champion! (LOL JK)
  18. I don't put my social on anything really as a rule of thumb, unless it is mandatory, and even then sometimes i still don't, until they ask for it. Just bought a shot gun a few weeks ago, no social, no problem. As for buying 6 guns in a year, it is my understanding that information is not supposed to be tracked except by the dealer. They run an FBI check, but the FBI is NOT supposed to be making records of the purchases/checks. This is an issue of concern in the Southern border states right now though as the ATF is trying to pass a law that requires tracking and reporting if someone buys more than X guns. I hope it doesn't pass because if it passes there, it'll only be a short ammount of time before it's a national thing.
  19. Thanks for the primer! It was very informative. For those that can't read it. Right click on the link... Save Target As save it where ever and open it manually.
  20. I read this post start to finish, which is highly unusual for a 5 page thread. Thanks all for the good insight.
  21. You need a damned lawyer to read and re-read and cross refrence all the articles just to understand these rules.
  22. "3 External modifications that are allowed: " is exactly how the rule book reads. There are no examples listed. http://uspsa.org/rules/2009RifleRules2-5.pdf page 77
  23. Plenty of others floating arond for the same price. Try Surplus Arms and Ammo. Usually some on Gunbroker too.
