  1. Welcome back I took this year off from USPSA all together because of the distances in the field courses and my need to get my legs working better. I still shoot IDPA but not with a lot of heart. To prove I could do it, I shot one IDPA major match with a revolver, one with a Glock, next with a revolver again, and soon to finish with a 1911. I still prefer the revolver to any hand gun and if things keep progressing as they are right now, I will be back to USPSA in the spring (or maybe some winter indoor stuff) with a revolver. Difference is, I never have and never will sell all my revolver stuff Regards,
  2. To answer your question, yes there is a grooved trigger. I change all of mine to .500 wide grooved and like it. There is also a narrower grooved trigger which is what I believe Mr. Michulek uses. He also advocates finger tip placement on the trigger for faster pull. I don't get faster pulls, I just get a better feel. Regards,
  3. Actually Ron, I never said it did not bother me. I said, I look for no special treatment for a minor problem. As far as going home pain free, that is not going to happen so yes, I "Bite the Bullet" and deal. The problem with IDPA in part, is elimination of the "Squat" which can be substituted for kneeling. You advocate moving the kneeling position to a later part of the stage. I recently shot a stage where it was stand and shoot while retreating, kneel behind the vehicle using cover, then traverse the front of the vehicle and shoot from the other side. Very difficult to do when the vehicle is made of cardboard so you can not use it to get up. I am no martyr, but I just don't think stages should be changed for me. It's bad enough I shoot SSR I appreciate your position and hope I get to shoot stages you design some day. For now, I just choose where I shoot very carefully and I Do where knee pads. Best regards, Gary
  4. As someone who has "Bad Knees" let me respond. If I can not figure a way to do the stage as designed, I will take a procedural. I will advise the SO of the fact I can not do it as designed and explain what I am going to do in a quiet voice so as not to cause a scene. The last S&W Winter Championship had several kneeling stages. Took me 2 days and a lot of ice paks to recover but it was a great match. The knee problem is mine and not the stage designers. Regards,
  5. Go to Gunsamerica.com and search "646" It will turn up the 2 I found for sale. http://www.gunsamerica.com/search.cgi Regards,
  6. You mean like this??? S&W 646. 2 on Guns America now. regards,
  7. A woman takes a lover during the day while her husband is at work. Her 9 year old son comes home unexpectedly, sees them and hides in the bedroom closet to watch. The woman's husband also comes home. She puts her lover in the closet, not realizing that the little boy is in there already. The little boy says, "Dark in here." The man says, "Yes, it is." Boy - "I have a baseball." Man - "That's nice." Boy - "Want to buy it?" Man - "No, thanks." Boy - "My dad's outside." Man - "OK, how much?" Boy - "$250" In the next few weeks, it happens again that the boy and the lover are in the closet together. Boy - "Dark in here." Man - "Yes, it is." Boy - "I have a baseball glove." The lover remembering the last time, asks the boy, "How much?" Boy - "$750" Man - "Fine." A few days later, the father says to the boy, "Grab your glove, let's go outside and have a game of catch." The boy says, "I can't, I sold my baseball and my glove." The father asks, "How much did you sell them for?" Boy -"$1,000" The father says, "That's terrible to overcharge your friends like that...that is way more than those two things cost. I'm going to take you to church and make you confess." They go to the church and the father makes the little boy sit in the confession booth and he closes the door. The boy says, "Dark in here." The priest says, "Don't start that shit again."
  8. If you bought it used, it is possible the previous owner changed the front sight to a .200 high front sight. Standard is usually a .250 from my experience. You can also get a .300. I buy replacements from JACK WEIGAND and have had good luck. Regards,
  9. Ray, I do not know if Ranch Products will ship to you but I will gladly act as a middle man if they will not. Here is the web address RANCH PRODUCTS Regards, Gary
  10. I also had a PC625 4". At the time I also had a Model of 1989. Shooting them both, I found the PC gun no more acurate than the older model so I sold the PC gun. I then returned the Model of 1989 to S&W and had them re-cut the forcing cone. It is now grouping better than ever. I am soon to get a newer 625 to use as a spare and practice gun. I will be interested in seeing how they compare accuracy wise with the same loads. Regards, Gary
  11. Since the tool costs $65.00 at www.moonclip.com, and I can buy 45ACP Moonclips for approx $20 per 100, I throw bent clips away. 300 moonclips will last a long time Regards,
  12. Copper, steel, lead and other metals have increased in price dramatically over the last three months. Steel pipe has about doubled. No sign of a let up either. As for why?? I can speculate but I have no proof. Copper and Steel usually go up in July and back down in September but it will probably just go up this year Regards,
  13. A quick "trigger job" is fine, I prefer to tune the entire action and have done them since 1980. If you can polish these surfaces, you should be able to repair the end shake. It is all part of the job. Although you have seen them described as the same part, they are three different things that because of their bearing surfaces and drag, they affect trigger pull. What I have written can be taken or left as is. I have learned from experience and attending schools at S&W. I do not actively repair firearms anymore except my own. People on the internet refer to many things in different ways. The terms I use for parts are what they are called at the factory where a Crane is either a bird or a toilet Try this for parts terminology it helps keep everyone on the same page: Note: All information expressed by me is worth exactly what it cost you Regards.
  14. Trigger return spring at 15# is what I find necessary for a good trigger recovery. It keeps it from being sluggish. As far as reducing trigger pull, lighter springs may make a lighter pull, but if the trigger does not return fast what good is a light pull?? There is a lot more needed to reduce trigger pull than springs and playing with the hammer. You need to polish the surfaces of the cylinder stop, the bolt, the barrel of the yoke, the face of the yoke needs to be square and polished, the locking bolt needs to be polished, the rod needs to be true and on and on. There is a lot to it. It ain't rocket science, but it's close Regards,
  15. Switching the springs to Wolf reduced power with 15# return help. If the trigger pull is heavier it will help when you get to your competition gun as it will feel even lighter. Regards,
  16. Nelson, Sorry for the delay. S&W Will work on the gun but make sure you advise them it is a competition gun and request they leave springs as is. As far as the "Dirty" response. That is a very good diagnosis. You asked about testing for end shake, cylinder closed (and unloaded) hold the yoke tight to the frame with one hand and see how much movement you have front to back with the cylinder. A little bit is OK but enough to hit the forcing cone is not. Check on all cylinders. Then check front to back movement of the yoke. I like the cylinder a little loose and the yoke tight. Regards,
  17. I would look at loose or bent extractor rod or excessive end shake in the cylinder. My first check would be the rod. Send it back to S&W for a tune up. They will fix it Regards,
  18. Well, I think most Master class revolver shooters can shoot my gun as good as their own just from the skill level. I had the chance to dry fire Mr Miculek's 625 and no doubt about it it is smooth and light. Trigger is standard width serrated. I use a serrated trigger for a different reason. I have very little feeling in my finger tips and need it. I use a .350 serrated and have for a long time. They are getting harder to come by so when I see them I buy them. They can be fit to MIM equipped guns with no problems. If any of you are shooting S&W Next week, Jerry will be shooting Saturday. Regards,
  19. Before you buy, be advised Moon clips are very pricey for this model and there are only a few making them. The 610 offers more options on a heavier frame that will also shoot 10MM. Original 646 was a Performance center gun and I felt it was too light for competition shooting but you may feel differently. As far as a holster etc for this, contact Mike Benedict at Talontactical.com and see what he can do. I have several of his holsters and I have been very pleased. Best regards, Gary
  20. Now the short answer. Not correct I have bobbed a lot of hammers and never had a problem. Regards,
  21. Back to revolver basics with trigger control and grip. I feel the sights should be the last thing you adjust after the grip has been adjusted and the trigger pull is consistant. Regards, gary
  22. Don't discount the 500 without trying it. I recently had a chance to shoot one and was surprised that the recoil was not as bad as the killer reports we have all heard. I can compare it to a 44 Mag with full loads with a 4" tube. The one I shot was also very accurate. 25 yards 5 rounds silver dollar size group. I can't wat to try the 4" version coming soon to a dealer near you Regards,
  23. Actually this is the best answer added to HTRN answer. As far as IDPA in Michigan, it looks like there are 14 affiliated clubs in Michigan so pick the one closest to you. http://www.idpa.com/clublist.asp?state=MI Good luck,
  24. Thanks Rhino, but when driving 6 hours to and another 6 hours back, paying over $500 for a weekend and then not being welcome, I know I won't make that drive again. It is true, I enjoy shooting. There is a social aspect to this game that mkes the trips a type of vacation. As far as the local level, I take the ribbing there also but know where it comes from. The ones that usually talk the most are the flat sided bottom feeders that can not beat a revolver. This year I will take some time off from revolver. I will shoot the area 7 in Harvard with a revolver but probably no others. That Harvard group is a great bunch and only a 2 hour drive. Maybe I just need a change but I know I will always go back to the revolver. S&W IDPA Championships is next and I will shoot SSR there. Regards,
  25. After shooting the AWARE match last year and being told by more than one RO that "Revolvers don't belong in IPSC" I began to rethink why I attend and shoot with a revolver. My legs don't carry me fast enough to win (I ended up walking two stages at area 7 before trhe ice paks came out) I have made a decision to stop shooting major matches. I enjoy it too much to have these hot shots ruining my day with their disrespectful comments and condescending attitudes. I probably wasn't much "Competition" but I paid my money for these matches like everyone else but when you are not made to feel welcome, you stop coming. I see the revolver class a little different I guess. It will die not grow and that is not good for the sport. Regards, Gary
