  1. Has anyone cone across sti mags crimping the 49cal rounds too much and what might be causing it and any solution to it? I've just installed the bolen 11coil springs and follower. With ipsc wedge pads , I get 17 in really tight but noticed that it is crimping every round.
  2. Is this for a 40cal? What internals did you use to achieve 20 rounds?
  3. For what its worth if you want the same feel as with the recoilmaster. Use an 11lb variable power Wolff recoil spring. The measured spring weight of the Heavy recoilmaster is 11lbs. Thanks for that. I am planning on getting both a 12lb and an 11 lb to see how they feel for me. Cheers
  4. I never thought of the huge impact spring length has. From reading the thread, the reverse plug should actually touch the head of the guide rod when fully compressed, otherwise this results in the reverse plug getting battered. Thanks for the heads up. I now wonder why these spring manufacturers just dont then make the correct recoil spring length in the first place for a 5 inch pistol...
  5. Would a shokbuff or something similar (aluminum buffs) have prevented the slide cracking though? To me it sounds logical for the shok buff to get really battered before anything else goes. That is why I have one always on my pistol
  6. Yup thats the one. So there is a bevel on it apparently. So I wonder if the FLGR that I get does not have that, will it damage the pistol or otherwise?
  7. Sorry to hear that this happened twice. Im also interested on what would be causing this. When you say the head of the guide rod, are you referring to its back end, near the barrel link area? Sorry could not put an image in my head but if that is the one, that wont make contact to the slide though and it would only be the reverse plug that gets banged in which case I would have thought that it would be the reverse plug that would firstly fail before the slide does...or at least I thought.
  8. Thanks, so the dimensions inside are that of the traditional 1911, at least in the area where the barrel link is. I will make sure to drill a hole on the FLGR if the one I get doesnt have it.
  9. My understanding is bull barrels are more accurate as you dont have an additional piece in between the slide and the barrel which is the bushing. In theory, the lock up is tight providing better accuracy.
  10. I couldnt find any online photo of the Dawson's rear but is that bevelled at its rear or is it contoured as all other traditional FLGR ? The Dawson tool less looks great but can I get away with say a traditional FLGR without any bevel on the rear head, and not cause damage
  11. Sounds like it is a matter of preference then on whether one likes the thump at the end or have it at the beginning. I'm thinking of giving ISMI a try. Are ISMI springs then considered variable?
  12. Hi New to the STI Edge, I noticed it has a recoil master on it. I have been reading a few things about them in this forum, some good and some bad. Anyway, I want to replace it with a traditional full length guide rod so I can tinker with the recoil spring weight that suited by taste in felt recoil based on the loads I have. Having owned single stack 1911's before, these were a simple drop in part. My question is, can I simply buy any FLGR and just drop it in? I noticed there are products now that have a bevel on the rear part of the FLGR located near the barrel link lug at the base of the barrel (hope I have described it well enough). Should I be concerned whether the replacement FLGR has this bevel or not? Can I get away without this bevel without damaging anything? Cheers Jim
  13. I've been looking for replacement recoil springs for my Para P16-40 and while I typically went for the variable rated Wolff recoil spring, the gunstore I typically went to ran out of them and but told me that they have the standard Wolff recoil spring in the same spring weight. Their explanation was the variable is that if it is say a 12lb spring, it actually starts at a lower weight and increases to 12 lb once fully compressed whereas the standard Wolff spring is 12 lbs all the way from uncompressed to fully compressed mode. This is the first time I've ever heard of this. Is this true and if so, how will the gun behave differently?
  14. Sin Ster, Im curious in iron sights for a bill drill you have described, what would be a likely acceptable time? I would imagine it would be above the 2's as red dot and comped guns would likely achieve it faster?
  15. I bought one arredondo spring and the follower clipped on it unlike the Brownells springs which easily fell off and would not stay on. Despite this however, after putting the 17th round in the para tube, the arredondo follower flipped inside the tube causing one of the cartridges to wedge between the follower the the mag body jamming the entire magazine. I think what happens is that because the 17th round is no longer supported by the ribs on the magazine tubes as these ribs taper off close to the bottom of the Para mag tube since originally the para mag tube was designed to hold 16 rounds only, this is where the arredondo follower fails as there is more room and tilts, which is no good. The original para follower are better in this aspect allowing me to load up to 18 rounds without a flaw. However when firing the pistol and it is on its last couple of rounds left in the mag, the last two remaining cartridges gets wedged which will not allow the remaining two rounds to go up further and feed into the pistol. I have deburred the inside of the mag for any sharp edges, applied silicon and cleaned the mag tubes but only after a couple of full magazine firing, the 3rd or 4th time I use the mag, it is jamming again. I've not even dropped the mags on the ground to get any more filther than what - residue from burning gun powder...
  16. I tried the Arredondo follower but the post under the follower is too short that it keeps on falling off the spring. When I load the mag, it always has a catastrophic jam as the follower tilts and gets a cartridge jammed underneath the follower incapacitating the full mag. Hate to see this happen in a competition
  17. Sorry as I may have not been clear. I have Para tubes, yes. Its unfortunate that they have discontinued production of the grams followers for Para. Does that mean that the Grams followers intended for the STI tubes cannot function properly in a Para tube?
  18. I've been competing in standard using my p16-40. The mags need replacement as it appears to be jamming the last round where it just gets stuck in the tube and doesnt want to go up any further. Strangely I changed the springs to those 10%+ brownells and still it did the same. Seems to be that the follower may be tilting (not sure) and prevents the round from sliding upwards. Im now thinking if my combination might not be the ideal one. I've got your standard 120mm para tubes, 10%+ browning p14/16 spring and the factory para follower. Is the grams follower and spring better? Noticed though that Grams only sell it for STI and SVI guns. Does that mean that it cant be used on para mags? What about the Bolen followers? Are they better in para mag tubes?
  19. I thought of reviving this thread as this talked about magazine set up for a P16-40. As of late, I have had issues with my magazines where the last 1 or 2 rounds have been jamming in the magazine where the rounds would no longer go up. I can see the rounds just sort of getting wedged on the side of the follower. I dont know if the follower is tilting but the rounds are certainly not going under or on the side of the follower and the stoppage is somewhat puzzling. My set up is the standard nickel P16-40 OEM mags. I have the original Para Ord follower and have replaced the mag springs with the 10%+ brownells springs for Para. I have tried to use the arredondo followers thinking that it could be the cause but the arredondo were much worse as it tilted at the bottom of the mag and rendered the magazine incapacitated. I am considering to try the gram followers and springs but are they suitable for para mag tubes as they appear to be for STI and SPS only. Anyone tried the followers with a Para mag tube?
  20. Yes, Chuck, My magazine base pad does look similar to the picture you have attached and it does lie absolutely flat on the box squarely while my sights are but just scratching the top. I tried to a different way to angling the pistol to get in the box and I managed to get it in, though with a bit of an effort, as in very very tight. Just wanting to know if your guns are also tightly fitting the box or should I really shave off some metal somewhere still?
  21. I thought of filing the base of the magazine but that is already appearing really flat as it angled already for the entire base to be flat on the box. If I shave off from there, it would be the entire magazine base plate and not just the front of it though... I suppose that is much better than filing the rear sight, so does that mean there is no actual tolerance of 1mm as shown on the IPSC rules for standard?
  22. Hi, A question please on standard division. I understand from the IPSC rule book that the pistol with an empty magazine inserted must fit the IPSC box, size of which is 225mmx150mm (hope I got this right). I've also read that the rear sights may be pushed down to fit the box. In the IPSC website, it had further commented a tolerance of +1mm, 0mm. So does that mean that the pistol could actually be 226mmx151mm in size? The reason for me asking is that the pistol which I intend to compete with has the novak extreme duty rear sight on it and due to its configuration with the rear sight having a shroud on the sides actually prevent the rear sight from being pushed down and so my pistol does not appear to fit the box by around 1mm simply because the side shrouds of the rear side is sticking out roughly by 1mm. I thought of filing it slightly but I fear damaging the rear sight so not too keen on this. So my question goes, will that pass standard division?
  23. Is the PXT extractor really that susceptible to failure? I had my reservations earlier but my P16-40 Todd Jarrett model, which features that large extractor has so far been working fine and I have had about 6k rounds through it with no problems. Of course I dont want the experience the problem in a match and so just wanted to get your thoughts?
  24. Any info on when production of this pistol stopped?
  25. I'm looking at buying the Dawson base pads as well for my P16-40. Does that added length in magazine though still fit the IPSC box for standard class?
