  1. Only THIS shot matters. I shoot smallbore silhouette, which is another mental game. If you're thinking about how good or bad you've done up to this point, or how many targets you still have to go, or how many you need to hit to beat that other guy, I can almost guarantee that you're about to miss THIS shot. The previous shots are gone. Nothing you can do about them. The future shots are not a concern. Only this shot matters. Make this one shot count. We shoot 40 rounds. You almost have to think of it as 40 1-shot matches. So bringing it back, don't care about previous shots or upcoming shots. Something in Brian's book about the present tense relates to this, I think.
  2. Fired another 94 rounds today in an informal match. Had zero equipment problems of any kind. (There were some software difficulties <_< but no hardware issues.) I started using the Tripp mags with the Dawson basepads a little. I fired at least one mag through each of the three. Interestingly, the one that I had trouble inserting into the gun? (See post above.) I was going to put it aside and not use it, but I couldn't figure out which one it was because they all three went just fine. Huh. Maybe the follower was just kinda stuck on one, being brand new, and it got unstuck. I dunno. Anyway, they ran perfect. The Dawson mags also ran perfect. Two of them are extremely difficult to unload by hand. No problem feeding through the gun though.

  4. The Dawsons are great with 10-rounds. No problem reloading. I haven't even had time to put ammo in my Tripps yet, so I don't know there.
  5. Barry is already registered, if I'm not mistaken. Jammer and I are planning to make a long cross-country drive for that match. I don't get out that way much anymore. Maybe I'll get to meet a few SSES Club members there.

  7. Looked like fun from the vids and pics I've seen posted. Were you wearing a cap with an American flag?
  8. I just did that yesterday. Running singlestack with 5 CR Speed pouches meant that about 25% of the outter belt was not Velcroed to the inner belt. There was some sag where the mag pouches are. Now it's solid all the way around.
  9. A couple of posts have touched on checking out the stages early. At the local matches where I've shot, they're usually looking for extra people to come early and help set up. During that time, there's a lot of "you can see this target from over here but not from over here," and "lets move this one over so we don't get a shoot-through to that one," or "is this target too high where short people are going to be shooting over the berm?" Those discussions and looking at stuff from all these different angles seem to help with understanding the stage. I know it helps me to have at least the beginnings of a plan for the complex stages before we even get to sign in. I might also get to add some input, "YO, I'm shootin' singlestack here. How many targets you gonna make me shoot from one position??"
  10. Aunt Bunny's comin' ta get me! The barbecue, Uncle Gus and Aunt Bunny, brontosaurus burgers, bigfoot . . . one of my favorite comedy pieces ever.
  11. I've heard the Dawsons are Metalform tubes but everything else is different. I still intend to try the Wilsons.
  12. Ok, I got my Tripp mags today. I have 5 Dawsons. I've fired 250 rounds through them, distributed pretty evenly among all 5, so about 5 mags full for each. I'm shooting "remanufactured" loads from Atlanta Arms & Ammo. I have both the 115 gr. JHP and the 147 gr. FMJ. Both just make minor. I've shot 100 rds of the 115 gr. and 150 rds of the 147 gr. (The 147 gr. is the same as the Team Glock load except theirs uses new brass and mine has used brass.) When unloading them by hand, one always seems difficult. I have not (yet) marked them to see if its the same one each time. I have had ONE ammo/mag malfuncion. One of the 115 gr. rounds failed to feed during practice. But this was during a quick mag change practice where I had repeatedly dropped partially loaded mags in the sand and shoved them back into the gun. So I'm not sure if I can blame the mags or ammo just yet, might've been me getting too much crud in there. 3 Tripp mags I just got. I have not fired them yet. One of the three doesn't want to go into the gun and lock in without a really hard shove. Then it takes way more force than it should on the mag release to get it back out. Tried it in two different guns. Same mag seems to have a very stiff spring (much stiffer than the others) and/or a sticking follower. It is HARD to close the slide on an empty mag, even holding the slide back and trying to push down the slide stop. (Again tried on two guns. And no, I don't push the slide stop and let the slide slam forward when empty.) Loading and unloading it a few times might help the spring/follower thing. Enlarging the hole where the mag catch grabs it might fix the difficulty inserting and releasing the mag. Or I might not jack with it and just send it back to Tripp. I have no doubt they'd take care of it. I've heard they're great to deal with. So the Dawsons so far, one of five might have a minor issue, still unverified. The Tripps so far, one of three has a significant issue. My statistical sample is too small to draw any real conclusions from that, but that's what I've got.
  13. I'd been meaning to buy a 9mm 1911 for a couple years to shoot SS minor. I figured I could get an inexpensive gun to shoot inexpensive ammo and get more shooting in. (FAIL on the "inexpensive gun" part. Bobby Keigans is a hell of a salesman! But I don't regret my purchase a bit. Love my STI USPSA SS 9mm that Bobby tuned for me a little. (EDIT: He gave me a hell of a good price on the gun I bought. I have no complaints there. It was just more than I originally intended to spend.)) I always shot .40 S&W and .45 ACP before. I had lots of trouble getting back on target for follow-up shots. See the sights lift?? Yeah, right. The front sight is pointed at the clouds. After I find it, I'll attempt to relocate the target and bring the two back together. I also discovered I was blinking, which was a big part of not being able to follow the sight. (I always shot slow-fire stuff before I got into USPSA, so it was never a problem.) I even freeze up on the first shot, draw > squeeeeeze as I tense up and try to get the sight just perfect > bang. Too long, way too long. I figured that the less violent recoil of a 9mm would allow me to work on seeing the sights better, figure out what I need to do to improve my grip and work on some other stuff without as much beating. Plus the cheaper ammo allows me to afford more practice. It's like training wheels. It is embarassing that I need training wheels, but I guess I do. People always say "minor scoring sucks." For the top shooters, it probably does. And for people who spray and pray, it probably does. But I've always been one of the more accurate shooters at matches. It's my slow shooting that kills me. So I'm using this to work on my speed while trying to not give up accuracy. Minor scoring is extra motivation to not sacrifice accuracy for speed. But after only one match and a few rounds in practice, I can already see that I can shoot this gun much, much, much faster. When I have a better handle on what I need to be doing, maybe I can do it with major loads. The extra two rounds in the mag for SS are just the cherry on top. Not the reason I switched, but a bonus. Another shooter let me try his 9mm 1911 after a match and it was just such an amazing difference. There was a popper set to not fall, about 15-20 yards down range. I emptied a 10-round mag into it. I started slow and sped up. The last three or four rounds were just as fast as I could pull the trigger and I hit the popper 10 shots out of 10. I was like MAN! This is like cheating! It's like a .22! I gotta get me one o' these! So I finally got one. I only have 250 rounds through it so far. Very impressed and having a ball with it. I will probably go back to Major. But not right now. +1 No, I'm not going to make a living at it. And you're right, it is FUN!
  14. Does she have a sister?
  15. Someone handed me one at my last match. I couldn't figure out where it came from. It looked like my ammo. But I had picked up the one from unload and show clear and hadn't cleared a jam or anything that might eject a live round. It could have popped out of a not-quite-empty magazine when it hit the ground during a mag change. It was probably my ammo, but I wasn't sure. Decided I didn't need it.
  16. Just now got the error message. Trying to go here: http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=153783&st=0&p=1722187&fromsearch=1entry1722187 Doing this: I hit refresh and got the thread.
  17. If you're talking about Winchester USA, aka Winchester white box, there are lots of guns that won't feed it and the cost of the gun doesn't seem to have much to do with it. Some will and some won't. It is about the trashiest ammo on the market. If a gun will run it, fine, if not, then just avoid it. (I know it's nice to be able to run to any Walmart anywhere and grab a box, but if it doesn't work, that option's out.) If your gun works with other ammunition, feed it what works rather than trying to "fix" the gun to shoot ammo it doesn't like. Is this it?
  18. One of my better matches, I was sick and only showed up because I was trying to get classified and wanted to shoot the classifier. I didn't care. I just showed up and shot without worrying because I really only wanted to go back home. I think I shot well because I did not stress out about trying to shoot well. Maybe you just wanted to get out of the rain and the usual pressures were sort of pushed to the back burner.
  19. I think the post office has my Tripp mags. Note in my mailbox yesterday says "Sorry we missed you." Apparently they were sent signature required. Now I have to go to the post office to pick them up. I'm in town during their business hours maybe once a week. Hopefully I'll get them this week. Dawsons did not require a sig and were left in my mailbox.
  20. Yeah, I've seen you at a match or two out by Levelland. (I haven't been around much lately though.) Weren't you at Gander Mtn for a little while?
  21. Oh I didn't connect "JCReid" with "Jeremy Reid" I suppose I might see it in person if I showed up at more matches.
