  1. Flood insurance? When I bought my first house ever (Houston), I had to get flood insurance. Best insurance ever; house flooded twice in 6 years. If you have to get it, there may be a reason. Keep the powder up high. And the computers, and .... etc. I am not a native-born Texan, but ancestors settled around Parker's Fort, pre-independence. Now, I'm back. Its a Good Thing.... Lee
  2. I have a Davis PPC gun, model 10, bull barrel, Bowmar rail, which puts it out of USPSA revolver division. The barrel is heavy, and it does not swing well, but it is great for PPC, maybe ok for Bullseye. It is possible that the un-smooth action just means the insides are filled with gunk, and need to be cleaned. Been there, done that. ("Oh, you need to clean the inside of a revolver, too?") The only way to tell is to pull the side plate; the dealer may not let you do that. And if it is just gunk, he may want more than $300. By the way, does it SAY Davis or Bill Davis anywhere? If not, how does the dealer know? Maybe a receipt? Also, a ring around the cylinder? What part? On the face where maybe the forcing cone was rubbing? Or around the outside? Regardless, sounds like if you think a heavy barrel revolver is in your future, this is a good place to start. Heck, if he is asking $300, maybe it could go for less. Lee
  3. Calculator? Who uses a calculator? MathCAD all the way! I do not even have a calculator at work any more. The HP41CV sits in the desk at home. Anyway, real engineers use slide rules. A long time ago I looked at the PE and could find no real reason (for someone in my position) to go through it. I suppose I should look into this, but I understand that the reason for me to get a PE would be to work as a consultant, and call myself "Engineer". This varies by state. Of course one can work as an engineering consultant, but the language used to promote ones business is the sticking point. At least, that is the way a Texas PE explained it to me. Anyway, Eric, good luck. Lee
  4. Detlef, My problem was more like "cannot find eth0" which it found during install but could not find during reboot. It could find eth1 but could not connect to eth1 in any way. Everything worked in Windows. At the time, my Internet connection was ethernet to wireless bridge, connecting to the router in the RV Park which was, at that time, my domicile. ("Have RV ... can work contracts anywhere ... and reload on the road"). Sorry not to be more help. I think when the Fedora configuration utility figured out what the hardware was, it got better. It was more of a "wrong driver" problem. By the way, my ethernet is on the motherboard; a Realtek RTL8169/8110 Gigabit chip. Lee
  5. All the ammo makers have bad batches. In the late 90's, Winchester had problems with several lots Q3131. See Ammunition FAQ for details. My experience echoes their's. I do not buy Q3131 now (noting that Q3131A is altogether different). But I buy Winchester. S&B is generally ok, but I understand not wanting to be bit again. Seems like last time I saw Federal American Eagle, it was around $3.49/20 and I would buy that before S&B at a similar price. Check your zeroes with the AE; it may run a little slower tham M193. I keep hearing "all the ammo is going to the troops" but I still see case lots at gun shows here. Not just Wolf/S&B/Silver Bear/Olympic, but Winchester and Federal M193-equivalents. Lee
  6. Ethernet was the hardware Fedora would not recognize for me. It took numerous re-boots with different settings to get it to work. As for Suse downloads, googling "free suse linux downloads" will bet some good hits. Right now I do not have the time to mess with another install, but let us know Lee
  7. They're cheap ... buy both ... let us know! This year I am going to a match which will have a night rifle component, so I may need something like that, and I do not want to spend an arm and a leg. Lee
  8. Tactical 00 buck shot. Even out to 25+ yards, puts them poppers DOWN For those ranges sensitive to having 00B (even reduced loads) shot at their poppers, there is always tactical #4 buck and various birdshot loads which are more in the 3 3/4 dram eq. range which will do the job. I alway carry a box of such just in case, even with me shooting an 1100 CM now. Lee
  9. If the goal is to take home metals, then the 590 is at a disadvantage. If the goal is to try the sport and get better at it, and have fun doing it, then go for it. Regardless, try it and see. Like me, you will probably shoot the 590 a while then switch to a semi-auto. There is something to be said for being good with the pump and beating some semi-auto shooters. Lee
  10. As a Linux novice, I tried Knoppix, which, as distributed boots only from CD. Good choice for a novice. You can definitely put persistent data and configurations on the hard drive, and, supposedly, it can be made to boot from a hard drive. Worked on both an older PC and laptop (~2000). It was much smoother than Fedora, which did not find all the hardware, and had to be reinstalled with different options a few times to get it running right. When the OS cannot find the network card, it is hard to get updates, etc. A former coworker recommended Suse. Combination of ease-of-use and stability and similarity to other Linuxes (Lini?), which he claimed Red Hat/Fedora lacks. I suspect there are are old, pre-Novell distros somewhere. I may try that, too. Lee
  11. Sorry to join the thread so late. I am dating myself a bit, but "Warhol's Dracula" defines "Movies so bad they're fun". Definitely adult, do not bring the kids. Helped to see it at a college dollar theatre night when I was an undergrad. Beautiful sets, lots of blood and sex, horrible acting. As a contrast, saw "Last Tango in Paris" in the same venue. Just bad, not fun. I would have walked out in the middle but the auditorium was so crowded that I would have tripped over someone in the aisles getting out. There is always "CHUD", which is Cannibalistic Human Underground Dwellers. 'Nuf said. Lee
  12. The long gun "break the 180" occurances I have seen have all been while slinging, or the gun flopping around while slung. All by people who were not experienced while slinging/unslinging long guns. Hot transitions need to be taught and practiced outside of a match. Too many people get to a match which allows or encourages the practice, then screw up when they try it for the first time with the clock running. If you want to allow hot transitions, provide an alternative for those who have not practiced it, perhaps box or tube to leave the gun safely. Lee
  13. Erik, When I had DirecTV, I never saw the artifacts you mention. I moved, sold the 20+ year old TV, then got a new modern HD-ready TV with the new house. HD looks good, but the HD-Dish Network gets what you describe ("chunky bits") when watching regular stuff. I suspect that sometimes there is just 1 too many format conversions and some picture is lost. The new TV is just too good and shows it all, good or bad. That is ALL through component video, no S-video. A true digital-input TV may help. Maybe. The HD-Dish box supports digital-out, but I was not ready to fork out the extra $$$ for the TV. Lee
  14. I have not checked out the "new" 03 classifiers, but there are a few from the 99 book which are not 10-round limited. They are rarely (never?) used, but they were there. So combining Lim, L10, and Production will not fly. Lee
  15. Leave it alone for now. There are too many divisions. Clubs already have enough trouble filling out 1st-2nd-3rd place at matches in all divisions/classes. I must assume that everyone who wants SS means SS to be 8+1. Well, any SS will be quite competitive today in L10 with 10+1 that stick out some. I shoot L10 with a wide-body in a production-like holster. No philosophy thing, just too cheap to get a race holster. I have way too many areas to improve before a fancy holster will help much. To reiterate another's point, the 10-round restricted states are a substantial fraction of the population. As a former Californian, I can relate. Also, the more USPSA is made to be more like IDPA, then what is the difference? Why would we need USPSA? A change that makes more sense to me is to turn Production (which is minor/double action/carry-type gear/restricted mods/10 rd) into Production(carry-type gear/restricted mods/10 rd). Dump minor and DA in Production to attract the carry-gear SS folks. But that is a whole new can of worms. Lee
  16. Is there an H&G 68 profile in jacketed? Like the starter of this thread, I prefer jacketed (or in my case, plated). Lee
  17. zhunter, Have you shot SWC from the gun? If not, my suggestion would be to shoot some before trying to load them. Like you said, "Assuming the gun will feed both equally well". It was easier for me to get RN to run in my 1911-type guns. Almost any length from 1.240-1.260. The SWC were more picky, to the point that I run RN only. I may try SWC again one day. The only one I got to work before was the Remington 185gr match (jacketed SWC). Those are spendy. The guns have had much work done since then, so it may be worth a shot (pardon the expression). Lee
  18. Having lived in a motor home, I screwed my 550 to a board, then clamped it to the dinette table. This kindof works, but the dinette table is barely strong enough to eat from let alone decap/size/bell/seat/etc. I learned not to leave the scale on the table while running the press. When it was me, the wife, 2 dogs and the cat living in the thing, there was no room and the reloading stuff stayed in storeage. When I took a job out of town, wife stayed home with the animals, I could take the reloading stuff. Glad to be back in a real house. Any portable table would have to be heavy, or bolted to something. Maybe you could stand on its feet or something. I'm thinking reloading while moving is a bad idea for a gravity fed powder feed. And a gravity fed primer feed. For a 1050, gravity fed everything.... Lee
  19. S'cuse me??? You got some 'splainin' to do I am neither cop nor soldier nor subsistance hunter. Nope, tools are for work. Guns are for fun. For me. Kath, That is Dlink's rep. Could you let us know what model and followup in a few days? Lee
  20. Almost out of season, perhaps more suited to a computer forum, but right on if you have ever done phone tech support: Twelve bugs of Christmas A summary: For the twelfth bug of Christmas, my manager said to me Tell them it's a feature Say it's not supported Change the documentation Blame it on the hardware Find a way around it Say they need an upgrade Reinstall the software Ask for a dump Run with the debugger Try to reproduce it Ask them how they did it and See if they can do it again. Lee
  21. For me, computing is more like a tool thing. If I need it, I get it. No Santa required. Guns are not tools; so Santa is required The 108 Mb/s speed is proprietary, so do not expect them to work across vendors. If you want the 108, buy all the same brand. Having a 4-port Ethernet switch in the wireless router is handy, unless you already have one. I have seen a cable modem with it built in. My Direcway box does not. I was staying at an RV Park with Wifi. The Dlink (Di-624) router had to be reset every 2-3 days, so I would not recommend that one. Lee
  22. After much reloading and indoor range use, I tested at 5. It bears repeating; do not eat or touch on a mucous membrane until your hands are washed. Some days at the indoor range were so bad that I had to blow my nose to clear the ... gunk. But that was after indoor matches when we took over the range and walked through/disturbed the downrange dust. Lee
  23. Come on Kurt, you know the definition of "tactical". Take whatever, make it in black. Voila! Tactical! Anyway, ditto Cabela's 7-pocket pants. For the vertically challenged, hemmed in the store while you wait, or to your spec if ordered online. There is a variant with some elastic in the waist. For those of us challenged in diameter..... Lee
  24. Christmas and birthday presents? But of course. No one forgets when my birthday is. And one of my cousins was born on Christmas, 5 years before me. Additional benefit: since holidays are more often spent with distant loved ones, I am more likely to see them on my birthday. As the family spreads out, that is a nice gift. Another nice gift is being able to email links to be.com and say, "This is what I want". I have never talked to Brian, but my family sure has. This year, magazine holders. Lee
  25. Sounds like no major arteries, so it could have been worse. I cannot imagine how bad it sucks to get shot. Unfortunately, such incidents have happened before and will happen again. However, Negative on that one. Maybe hang out at matches and help with stats until the physical therapy is done. And get the gun fixed sooner than later. As for: I would hesitate to do this because if there is a failure, I have the hammer back on a failed sear/safety and a loaded chamber. My thumb might exacerbate the problem with no good way to get the hammer down. Lee
