  1. Well, it started by introducing a character who was not in the book at all and it has gone pretty much further and further away from the book ever since. I've watched the first hour and outside of the vague outline of the Overlords arriving to help mankind and the name of the lead character, it is almost completely different than the book. I could maybe accept an updating if it were a good movie, but it is BORING!!!
  2. Here is an important thing to consider... Most off the shelf devices use some kind of tip that fits into the ear. Ears are very different and what works for some doesn't work as well for others (I know this from experience). When looking at a device, check to see if it comes with a selection of tips. There are some that can be fitted to a molded ear piece. These tend to fit better and are more comfortable for a longer period of time but can also add a lot to the price since you have to pay for the molding plus the custom mfg.
  3. This comes up from time to time so be sure to search past threads for other recommendations. Based in input from long range shooters, whose guns are often much louder than pistols, I've considered getting a pair of Gun Sports from Etymotic. But they are fairly expensive.
  4. I got one to use for cleaning primer pockets and holes for precision rifle, but found it was overkill for me. It is good for doing some gun parts however. As for chemicals, simple is better. You really only need a surfactant (wetting agent) or a tiny amount of very mild detergent.
  5. If you are the first or second shooter, then you don't have the time to walk the stage several times and refine your plan. You may just have to set a general sequence in your mind then slow down a bit and pay attention. A few seconds slower beats a FTE hands down.
  6. If you are shooting limited, then you probably have a magwell and basepads. The top of the basepads can sometimes press against the magwell with the result that you are not getting a complete seat of the mag catch.
  7. I haven't been following this discussion but I would think that you could use a .40 and just shoot minor. I'm considering removing the magwell from my Glock 35 and putting on a red dot and giving it a try.
  8. Both grip and aim are learned. NPA is a bit of a myth, it is where you think the gun should be and that varies with the gun and grip. It's a learned action.
  9. Practice, practice, practice. Point shooting is a very worthwhile skill to have.
  10. Have you cleaned the chamber and lugs? Is the bolt or carrier coated? Are you using any lube? Do you have access to an ultrasonic cleaner you can clean the BCG with?
  11. If that were true, then you would have a good point, but it's not the exact same mount. They may look alike and serve the same purpose but they are not made by the same people in the same way in the same place - or at least they probably aren't. That does not make one better than the other, by the way. Can the cheaper part do the same job just as well, I don't know - and that's my point. You can't know if the cheaper part is going to do the job until you try it out and see. It might very well work and if it does then kudos for finding a bargain. But you can't assume a substitute part will work unless you (or someone) tries it.
  12. I will watch until I feel that they have crossed the line - it depends on what they do with it. Stormship Troopers is a good example... The movie took the book, pulled a few pieces out of it, then threw the rest away. It doesn't matter that much if the result was good or bad, it was unnecessary. They could have called it "Bug Wars" and discarded the few names they borrowed and it would have been the same movie. The premise of Childhoods End is quite unique for it's time and it does ask some hard questions of the reader. The main characters and tone of the book are clearly in favor of something that is a radical departure for us. And oddly, very different from ideas expressed by the same author in other books. It's as much a coming of age story as anything - a discussion of how our view of the world changes as we get older. I just hope they get it right, but I have seen too many cases where a good story has been ruined by people who neither know nor care about the source material. They are so busy trying to change it around to suit their own tastes that it ends up being trampled in the mud.
  13. I've heard it before. I had to go lookup the lyrics and, yes, there are things about it that fit the story. I could see that song being used a couple places in the book or as the closing credits.
  14. There can be big differences in manufacturing quality and tolerances. Do holes line up, is the fit tight or loose, are edges smooth or ragged, are bends uniform, etc, etc. You frequently won't know unless you buy something if it's any good or not, and price isn't always a guide. "You pay your money and you take your chance."
  15. Anyone who is a fan of hard SciFi from the 50's has probably read "Childhood's End" by Arthur Clarke at least once. I've probably read it at least a dozen times along with a few other selected books from that era. My old paperback copy was in such bad shape that it was falling apart that I had to retire it when I moved earlier this year. And anyone who has read it knows that it would not be an easy movie to make. There's almost no action and a large part of it centers around an unseen alien representative of the Overlords and the human representative of Earth. It's a mystery/thriller, psychological cat and mouse game. And it plays out over two or three generations. Well, I just saw the trailer for a SyFy miniseries based on the novel and, as I pretty much expected, they are taking some liberty with the story to introduce some action. How much they are going to screw with it, I cannot say but I have the feeling that they are probably going to wreck it. The problem with trying to turn something like Childhood's End into a movie is that it was written for a different time, a different audience. An audience for whom TV was something new and the Cold War was something very immediate. It was a book about ideas. The miniseries will air in December and I will give it a try. But I'm not holding my breath. And if you have never read the book, and you like classic SciFi, then you need to. It is very much unlike anything you have read before.
  16. Without doing an item by item comparison, this is going to be an extremely difficult question to answer. The superficial answers would seem to come down to: 1. Airsoft is usually considered to be a toy as compared to real guns 2. Toy gear doesn't have to be a ruggedly made as real gear 3. Real gear can command a higher price than toy gear There are obvious flaws with these theories. 1. Airsoft gear, while often considered a toy, can be well designed and made 2. In a non-combat situation most people aren't likely to mistreat their gear anywhere near the way toys are treated 3. People are often willing to spend a lot on toys It's probably a combination of all of these factors.. While they may be well made, material quality and manufacturing tolerances can often be a good deal lower for Airsoft. Parts that attach don't have to deal with the level of shock and vibration. And the way the two things are used and what is demanded of them are often very different. There is a possibility that you can purchase a perfectly usable piece of gear and have it work. You probably can't tell without trying.
  17. It's worth bearing in mind that the original post is about a field expedient way of setting/checking the ACOG (presumably the 4x) on the Marine M16, which is designed to be zeroed at 100m. It's done using the 300m mark on the BDC. Trying to zero a 5.56 with a 4x optic at 300m introduces a lot of variations that can make that difficult. Certainly it would be nice to check it at that distance, but the whole idea behind a battle sight zero is to zero at a shorter distance where small variations introduced by the shooter and the environment can be minimized.
  18. You're not talking about the old Canadian bull target are you? I seem to remember that could be used for either a 250m or 350m battle sight zero depending on whether you were hitting the upper or lower X. Dang, that's really stretching my recollection. But back then, I think everything was done in yards not meters. I was referring to this target: http://www.armystudyguide.com/content/army_board_study_guide_topics/m16a2/zero-and-m16a2-rifle.shtml But in either case, I think you are correct because in both of these methods, you are either not hitting where you aim or you have to make a correction afterwards.
  19. IF I remember this right... The standard zero distance for iron sights is 25 meters (27 yd) which also put's you at zero at 300 meters. Is it possible that you got the distance wrong? The height above bore for an ACOG is going to be different on a flat top than it would if mounted on the carry handle. That's going to effect the ballistics so it may be this is what the 37yds refers to.
  20. I did it once for a 3-day long range rifle class (heavy ammo). Shipped it UPS to the hotel, by prior arrangement. It was cheaper than it would have cost me to take it with me, but it also meant that, if anything had gone wrong I would have been SOL.
  21. For those who have concerns about privacy issues, be aware that a large swath of software out there, including smart phones and even smart TV's do send information of some kind back to the mothership. This is done to "improve the product and the user experience." IOW, it's for our own good. Here's some information and recommendations on Win10 from a respected source: https://www.thurrott.com/windows/windows-10/5337/windows-10-tip-understand-and-configure-privacy-settings
  22. What caliber? What game? What distance? An emergency rifle is often just iron sights.
  23. I thought the CZ 75 had a decocker and safety. Learned something.
  24. If you are on Win7, there's no compelling reason to upgrade. If you are on 8.1 and have had it for a year or less, it's worth the upgrade. If your are in between, it's 50/50.
