We are in the country so no electricity means no water since the well pump is out of commission with no power. On Tuesday I brokedown and bought a generator. Since both my wife and I work from home our respective businesses have also been at a stand still. I ordered a $2000.00 generator which had to come from Indianapolis. It showed up on Wednesday and I went into Columbus to pick it up at about 11am. I had to stop at Home Depot on the way home to get gas cans, some cable and a lock to secure it at my house. I parked 4 spaces from the front door and walked in at 12:30. I came out 20 minutes later and the damn thing is gone. The generator was lashed to a pallet with a 1 inch metal strap and it weighed nearly 300 pounds. In the middle of the day I didn't even give it a second thought. For those of you who know Columbus I was at the Brice Rd/I-70 Home Depot. Not a great area of town but in broad daylight who would have thought. To top it off the lady working the Brat Cart right next to my truck said, "I saw two guys who looked like they were in a hurry and they were having trouble getting it in to a small SUV." Hey dumb ass, doesn't that seem odd to you. I guess if she was smarter, she wouldn't be working a hot dog cart in the Home Depot parking lot. They took the info and gave it to their lost control specialist. Unfortunately they are out sick until next week and apparently have no one else to review the footage. When I called for an update the manager said they would be lucky to get a make and color of the vehicle and an approximate description of the person(s) responsible. They said the quality wouldn't be sufficient to see a license plate number. Why the F*&^ do you have cameras that provide worthless images? But I would have made one hell of a scene if I came out and saw it in progress. I bought a replacement that same day and now have an empty box which I am tempted to go back and use as a decoy. We've had breakins up here where they steal a bunch of old crap, then wait for the owner to buy all new stuff then come back and take that too. They might fall for it. Call the company, they probably have the S/N recorded against the purchase. If you give it to the police, they can log it into a few different databases. I LOVE to check serial numbers on items like generators at known scum bag's houses. You find all kinds of things, and it's an easy cleared case. I feel for your loss especially with the power being out. That's just complete crap. Stuff in cars... Have you called your vehicle insurance? The theft might be covered under the vehicle insurance. Dude, that freakin' blows Trust me, security cameras in many places just suck....even in banks...hello, you're a bank, if you get robbed wouldn't you like to be able to ID the robber from the video? Lots of companies just won't spend the money on quality systems until they get burned bad enough, but you'd think a big company like Home Depot would be more forward thinking than that. Generators are HOT items in times like these. I hope the douches get tagged for something else stupid, and you get it back. You definitely have my sympathy. Once was all my pistols( in front of my house in broad daylight at the end of the cul-de-sac that I live on) another was in front of the house I rented while I ran in quick to use the rest room and the mother*&^$#rs took all my tools after work in a thunderstorm. Both times I was within seconds of catching the people in the act. While you should be able to leave things in your car in front of your house, in your driveway, in a gated and regularly patrolled neighborhood, you cannot. Here we call them SNAKES. I hate snakes! Regarding Serial #'s - I hadn't even gotten it out of the box and the company I bought it from did not open it and record the serial number before shipping it. All the police have in their report is the make and model. I am an insurance agent and my own agent to boot. It is covered under my homeowner's policy BUT with the $1000.00 deductibles I carry that means I would get back $1000. However, my company has a CashBack program which pays our clients 25% of their home and auto premiums back in cash if you go three year's with out a claim on either policy. I had a hail claim a couple of years ago and the clock started over. If I turn this one in I give up about $2100 in CashBack checks over the next 3 years. I will likely not turn it in since I will spend 3100.00 to get back 1000. Time to cut it loose and move on. There are worse things that could have happened. He was on the roof of a building running a nail gun...attached to a bunch of air hose...which was attached to the compressor (running) in his truck. ...when his nail gun quit running.
