So now I have shot three IDPA matches.

the first match, I shot a sig 228 in a old safariland paddle holster.

the gun never locked back, so I did a lot' of racking reloads!

Had fun, decided to keep going.........

the second match, I thought I found the perfect pistol, a .38 super wide body I found here......

It also didn't lock back the slide, because the slide stop I used had too much of a dimple. I changed the stop to an unmodified one, tested it, worked good, thought I was all set........................

Went last night, Got a better holster, a gun that goes to slide lock and...

:( Uh oh, they had a box to start stage one, Pistol just fit!, but that was without a magazine in IT.

Needless to say, I didn't shot that gun last night.

Does anyone know of base pads for Caspian wide bodies that will allow it to fit the box?

Just checking, before I start grinding away, they are just a little too long!

Anyway, I think I'll stick around IDPA for a while. :goof: It is a lot of fun, different , but fun all the same.

Heck, I even rejoined IDPA, I joined a long time ago, but never went to a match, they even gave me my old membership number back! Now I have to get qualified

I would suggest you weight that Caspian before you spend any $$ on it if you want to use it for IDPA.... Great pistol but (the one I had) will not make the weight limit - no way.

Good advice, I'll check it out, it sits at 43 oz on the old kitchen scale, I'll have to take to work for a more accurate accounting <_< might have to take the guide rod out & take the grips off :goof:

Is that 43 ounces with or without an unloaded mag in the gun?

With an empty mag....

Not sure how good the scale is...... :angry2:

9X21,

Try this: use a commonly available, stock gun. Radical - I know - but you can do it. You may be shocked by this, but 38 Super wide bodes are not quite there yet.

I'll even loan you one. How about a nice M&P to get you started?

Glad you're back - we missed you.

whatever do you mean,

That Sig 228, I shot at match #1 was as stock as they come..............

I watch & learn, IDPA is pretty gamey at its own level.

I didn't hear you telling me how stupid the holster I was using at the first two matches was!

I learn slow, but, I am learning,

Brand new postal scale says it weighs 41.5 oz. with an empty mag.

This is an early frame with openings under the grip panels and it's built with a Colt non-ramped .38 super barrel, if you ever seen one, their thin in the middle with a bulge at the end where it meets the bushing, these likely factor in its making the weigh in.................

Now I need to come up with some short base pads to make the box!

What did you use Merlin?

I never got past the weigh in with my endevor... Makes me wish I had tried a different set of scales.....Now I wonder if I sold my Caspian (way to cheaply) based on a shitty inaccurate set of scales.

I got this one for 7 beans from here (you must have been sleeping that day Merlin), all I had to do was remove the scope mount & install Bomars...Shoots like a Champ

It even came w/ four mags...............

Even a blind squirrel gets an acorn sometimes..

After I ruined one mag, I decided to take a really radical approach, I called Caspian.

Guess what, thay already make a flat mag base pad that fits the IDPA box, ordered 10 today.

Hey Merlin! :surprise:

So now I'm getting down to it,

Learning as I go.

Pistol #1, Caspian widebody 38super ESP, minor loads, makes weight, new mag pads coming to make the box. With a little work it goes to slide lock most of the time......rounds: 10+1

Pistol #2, Single stack 9mm/38 super ESP, this is an old single stack comp gun, Dan Sierpina my old gun plumber is willing to convert it back to bushing barrel, goes to slide lock 95% of the time. rounds: 9+1

Pistol #3, STI .45 widebody, commander slide, bushing barrel. Shoots low (with 19 year old 200 gr SWC 175 PF) with fixed Novak sights, ( I have adjustable to install ) can use for CDP or ESP. if I understand rules correctly.................. <_< can go 10+1 or 8+1

Opinions Please, which one would you use for IDPA?

It does,

and is easy to shoot,

but............

Being the old cheat'nmfn USPSA/IPSC (gamey) shooter I am,

 It looks to me like 9+1 in the single stack may be the way to go!

no more than 18 rounds per course, gun to slide lock after 5 targets, reload four targets to go!

(odd number round (10+1,8+1) pistols have to re-engage the same target twice!)

time is money  (or at least a better finish!)

If you don't have the yen to shoot two divisons with one gun in the STI, the single stack is very good. I would get a slide stop that worked all the time; slidelock reloads are basic to IDPA.

I have read many times that a 9-round magazine is desirable because 9+1 lets you fire five double taps and reload on the transition to the next target. True enough, but if you have a lot of those, the MD lacks imagination. There ought to be enough 3 shot targets or/and steel to upset that schedule on a good proportion of stages. Metalform and Tripp are now making 10 round 9mm magazines, Tripp has 10 round Supers that should be better than previous types. But a Metalform 9-round Super with their rounded front guided follower is the most positive magazine on the slide stop that I know of, see above.

I would also consider how much of what brass i have on hand ..at a state match, almost all are a lost brass match..i just hate seeing all that 38 super brass laying around...the STI would also allow you to play in limited and limited 10 in uspsa...and really it's ALL going to go on what YOU like the most and shoot the best...

686 SSR

Craig

I'm working on it,

I'll suprise you one night........

Can't decide between moon clips or comp III's...........

Comp IIIs. Moonclips will put you in ESR, so you'd have to load to a 165 PF and shoot against easier-reloading 625s. Besides, it takes class to shoot with speedloaders. ;)

Thanks again!

So last night, I go to the local match, ready to try & shoot yet another pistol.

The plan was to try my 586 in SSR......

Of course the match started with a low light (in this case, just about no light stage)

As I'm waiting to shoot, looking at my poor excuse of a flash light, I decide this isn't a great idea to try two new things at the same time. (shooting a wheelie & trying to use a flashlight at the same time!)

Quick switch to my 1911 ESP and ....

Well, we really should have had nightvision video!

Beep, can't find the light in my pocket , then can't find the on button, geezzz,

No night sights, pointed the flash light in the wrong direction, fumbled & bumbled, you get the picture.........

Finally put it back in my pocket & used the "Force".... :surprise:

Of course, the second stage was in the dark also, little better on that one until I dropped my mag on the reload!

Once again, I have a new found respect for IDPA shooters & their skill sets!

Off to order a miners hat! :P

Can't wait for the BUG gun experience............ :(

Surely you dropped that mag after the stage was over and you were arranging your gear - that's the way I remember it. The MD would have seen it if it were any other way.

Yeah, that's what happened................

PS, I'll try working up some 180PF flame throwers for my wheelie, may have to try'em in Dave's Ruger first though! :P
