Hard Cases?

I'm looking for a decent hard case able to carry a couple handguns. Seeing as most of you seem like hard use people, I thought some of you might have some suggestions on whats tough and what isn't.

Skip the low-end Doskocil-type cases unless you're really short of $ or just want a plastic box to put a gun in.

Good-for-not-a-lot-of-$ - the smaller SKB's and Pelicans (big sizes get to be $ fast)

Great, especially for travelling-- Secure Firearms Products

Which models do you guys find works best? Also where do you buy them?

I have the 1450 model cases for handguns, the 1700 for rifles.

I buy them direct from Pelican...http://www.casesbypelican.com/guncases.htm

+1 for www.cases4less.com

I have several cases but the one I use for travel is the 1500 series with the cubed foam. I will carry 2 Open blasters in there very securely.

I also use Pelican cases for most of my SCUBA gear as well.

I'd highly recommend Starlight Cases. They aren't the cheapest but if you look around you can get decent prices on them. The rifle cases are available with wheels like most luggage and spring retracting handles. Makes carrying long guns and some luggage MUCH easier in airports. I've flown with mine a few times and absolutely nothing fazes it. I don't have one of their pistol cases yet but it's who I will go with when I do. If you want to read up on them search google. Never have heard a bad thing about them and you definately won't from me.

If you buy one and intend to fly with it, make sure you check the airline regulations. I originally bought a Pelican 1650 and learned that it was just a little too big. By big, I mean height + width + length has to be within a certain number. I believe NWA was around 62 inches (but I'm not sure off the top of my head). I think the Pelican 1650 was 2 inches over the limit. I've never seen anyone get out a tape measure, but if they did, it would be an additional fee. Also, the cases are heavy. There is a weight limit. The 1650 weighs in at 35#'s and the weight limit is 50#'s. 200 rounds of 45 ammo is around 11-12 pounds. With guns and gear, it would have been over the weight limit for a domestic flight. I do remember reading somewhere burried in the airline regulations that rifle cases are exempt from their linear dimensions regulation. (I print all of that stuff off and take it with me to the airport. The people working the counter have no idea what their regulations are. You have to educate them on how to do their job). Good luck.

I ended up sending the 1650 back and buying a Pelican 1610. I couldn't be happier.

I'll also second Starlight cases, I have 3 of them. The only problem I have with hard cases is the Foam. I keep changing guns or configurations and I need to cut out new foam each time (which isnt cheap). Out of curiousity, what do most people prefer, open cell or closed cell foam?
