This doesn't surprise me after reading the rule. However... I think the fact that you can add grip tape or a rubber sleeve (which are both ADDITIONS ) but you can't change the texture is somewhat hipocritical IMHO. I don't even want to stiple my gun that bad but that rule is a little off. Does any one else feel this way?

it can be viewed that way...

think what they wanted to avoid was the machine or hand work to the frame..

if i could..i would have mine checkered..but I think to keep costs down they settled for trying to write rules to allow inexpensive grip tape or rubber sleeves..which is fine.

anyway..just a rule..whether it makes sense or not..its the guidelines we play in.

Trust me, you're not the only one that has this opinion, but them's the rules.

I was told today (and he showed me the printed email) that John Amidon said that grip tape or rubber sleeves ARE NOT Production legal. I thought they were........

That is exactly opposite of what JA has said in the past. This is about grip tape on the frame and NOT the slide, correct?

As others have replied, at the present time NO grip stippling in Production.

HOWEVER---The proposed 2008 rules, Appendix D4, line 20, specifically allow

grip stippling and checkering, as well as grip tape and sleeves.

So unless something changes, wait a few months and then stipple to your hearts content.

How about that ?!? When exactly should that go through? That's good to hear.

IF it goes through---the new rule book is a work in process until it heads for the printer--

it will probably take effect Jan 1 2008.

From John Amidon (5-15-07) on modifying a Production grip:

Under the Production criteria listed on page 98 of the current rule book, item 21.6 say's no, grip tape or sleeves can be added, no other modification

can be done like cutting groves to reach mag release or size reduction.

I do not think that the 2008 rules will get any better on this.

I think you're right, I missed the comma in John's email and was thinking the no applied to the grip tape or sleeves. Thanks for the eye opener.......

  • 5 months later...

Thanks for the link Flex.

For those that don't want or have time to look it up, the answer is yes you can stipple your grips.

It is under appendix E4 which shows a diagram of where the stippling and/or grip tape may be applied.
