gadabout
I have loaded this round with 158g JHP with no problems with Power Pistol but tried 148g lead Wad cutter and had a bad smoke problem. I tried loading useing aa5 powder and got the same issue. Any ideas?? Thanks Craig
RudyVey
Maybe the wad cutters are lubed...
gadabout
They are, with a blue lube in two groves. Craig
superdude
The lube is most likely the source of the smoke. If you like wadcutters (or any lead bullets) but don't like the smoke, switch to Hi-Tek coated bullets. Edited July 23, 2023 by superdude
gadabout
I don't like these bullets but just trying to get rid of them and I have a friend that shoots 38 special and I was thinking of his needs. JHP have always worked better for me. Craig
Postal Bob
Any lead bullet will smoke a lot compared to a jacketed bullet. Like stated, switch to a coated bullet.
IVC
Smoke is not from the powder, it's from the bullet. Sure some powders run hotter than others, but chances are it won't help much to search for special powder because they'll all be hot enough to smoke. Joe4d
Load em with a faster powder like American select or WST... Still get some smoke but less than you are getting with power pistol. Will also use less and get less recoil.. Save your power pistol for 357 mag loads
gadabout
OK just found a bunch of wadcutters that are hollow base sweded lead that I will load up and test. Thanks to everyone for the replies. Craig

gadabout
I am not sure of the brand of bullet but it's a hollow base standard wad cutter. I shot some today and they do smake but not near as bad as the others. Thanks for all the input. Craig
gadabout
Well I received 500 125g 38 cal FMJ flat top bullet from American Reloading yesterday. Just loaded 25 at 6.3g Power Pistol and will test tomorrow. This load is right between 38 and 38+p. I am sure it is safe as my Rock Island is +p rated. gadabout
Late yesterday I went and shot 12 of the 125g FMJFT rounds and no smoke and a nice comfortable round. I want to try these in my S%W airweight!! Ought to be be real nice. Now I need to search around and find brass to load. Craig
