Why can't anyone make a 1911 slide with an integrated picatinny rail for optics?

High end rifle actions now have intrgrated picrails milled as part of the receiver for a universial optics mount interface that is bomb proof.

Why not on a 1911 slide between the rear sight and ejection port? A definitive goodbye to the silly diversity of mounting plates.

I doubt we will see that.  The added height of the rail and the mount puts the dot too high.  It would be higher than ever a dovetail adapter.  It would be more feasible if the rear sight was left off and the rail was mounted in a scallop cut.

Open shooters have managed more height over bore for decades, so that's probably not the main reason.

 

It's way easier to do a plate cut and all the Coyote Tan kids will be happy because they can co-witness, plus you can sell plates.  Additionally you can do that on existing slides and tooling.  Very few people make 1911 slides with much extra top material, even as raw forgings.

No, it can be milled into the slide with the same hight as a regular slide top. This has to be done from a bar stock to mill a new slide, not on an existing slide. The depth on the cross slot on a picrail is shallower than most slide cuts for mounting plates 

Then the picrail will be lower than using a EGW plate in a sight cut.

But even if it was flush with the slide it would be higher by quite a bit than a normal nice deep slide cut. Especially considering for pretty much all optics you would need to mount the optic to an adapter that can mount to a pic rail.

You could put a tiny rail section aft of the ejection port, yes. 

 

It would be interesting to try but seems very difficult to have reasonable co-witness sights and there are very few dots with integrated rail mounts, so you still have slide->plate->dot and the dot would sit taller as the stack up is bulkier. 

 

I think people often put too much weight on minimal dot height, but there are advantages.

 

For a bit of history, in the early days Open scope mounts had pic rails on them for the dots to mount to.  Within a couple years that style was gone and everyone was direct-mounting to the dot or had integrated rings for tube dots.

Yeah, that is an extended plate system.  You could just get one of the plate people to make a rail plate and have the same thing at the back, but I've not seen anyone do that yet.

 

Unless you get a square-top slide the rail won't fit anywhere above the roundover, and that on a GI slide puts the rail cuts into the extractor and firing pin tunnels.  Caspian makes square-top slides on special order so maybe they can be convinced to do one with a rail.  Seems like something bullseye competitors might want too.
