How to tell when a spring is too light

I've been swapping recoil springs on a couple pistols (1911, XD, beretta) to try and minimize the muzzle movement. I don't necessarily shoot these guns competitively regularly, but like the idea of a properly tuned spring rate, but also don't want to damage the gun with too light of a spring (is this possible). Is there a way to tell how light I can go before diminishing returns/long term potential for damage? Let me know if more info is needed,

Thanks!

Shoot double taps and watch where the 2nd round goes.  If high them spring is too light.
