using 10mm mag in single stack .40

So I hear tell of some folks using 10mm mags in their .40's so they can load "extra long" for better feeding and in theory lower pressure. I load as long as I can in 9mm and Super, but not convinced going to a 10mm mag in a .40 is really going to be worth it, and if you were to load 165's that could cause problems as you may not be able to load long enough to feed properly. Thoughts?

It's worth it. Most folks running 40 major like fast powder and (relatively) heavy Bullets. To do this safely and get the feel that most folks seem to like you'll want 10mm mags.

IIRC the longest you can load for a .40 1911 mag is 1.165". 1.180 to 1.200" is a pretty common length to reload .40, hence the 10mm mag body.

So ,lust last night i dug out 9 of my 80's vintage 1911 45ACP mags , Devel,Wilson-Rogers ,etc. Tried feeding 40 cal rounds thru my 40 Rock Island all but 2 functioned just fine those two wouldn't lock the slide back .

I use Wilson and CMC 10 mm mags and load 1.180 to 1.200 pending on bullet etc

They work perfect

Ok this makes sense, but....what happens if/when you have to use factory/match ammo? Are you pooched or do you stand some chance of reliability?

Been doing it for several years. Wore out one gun working on another.

With regards to shooting factory ammo in the 10mm magazines, I have FTF about 1 in every 4-5 rounds. That was with Winchester white box 180 gr. No at all reliable for my standards.
