I read the forum rules after I posted that topic. I knew hunting was against the rules, I did not know talking about "killing animals" was against the rules, which is what I was advocating.

And for that, I apologize. Brian's forums, Brian's rules- and I'll respect that.

I have had to drive a tractor through a field...

It says in the forum rules that this is a competitive shooting based forum, not necessarily that it's anti hunting. I'm very much pro hunting but there's plenty of other forums dedicated to that and I really like not having to hear about it when I'm on here. That may be because I'm surrounded by super hunting master sniper gunsmith grizzly bear wrestlers all day and I've heard enough tall tales in a week to last a lifetime. Most people on here are fairly serious about perfecting their craft, most hunters (not all) are simply armchair commandos. I'd prefer not to mix the two.

ETA: I'm not going our of my way to offend anyone here, just stating my observations and why I'm thankful for a place in the interwebs that's solely dedicated to something I'm passionate about and saving me from filtering through a bunch of other gun related topics to actually learn something. Thanks BE!

Since you guys asked, here's the relevant portion from the rules -- relevant portion highlighted:

Intent
This Forum is for firearm, technique, and conceptual discussions pertaining to training and competition. (And various unrelated topics.) While the occasional defensive shooting post is not prohibited, in general, defensive shooting discussions or debates are discouraged. And please, no hunting or "killing animals" (of any kind) threads.

It's Brian's house, and part of the "house rules." There's plenty of places on the 'net to discuss hunting; we'd just ask that you not do it here.....

I have not seen it in my lifetime. But I have seen the pens where the live birds were kept at a local club. These pens were torn down many years ago. But My point is that live bird shooting was once an acceptable practice in the USA, California no less.

I am neither for or against it. I agree that the Enos forum is not for this topic.

Here are a couple of interesting links on the subject:

My local childhood Trap club in CA still has the "Traps" that they used to keep the pigeon's in and still used them occasionally I think into the late 80's maybe even early 90's.

I seem to remember the shoots as a kid. You paid something like 5 or 10 dollars a "game" which I think was a bird until you miss or are the last guy standing. Winner got double his money and the rest went tot the club as a fundraiser. There were lots of side bets and money being thrown around back then. I specifically remember a former white house resident who frequented the event when in town. It was not uncommon for some of the guys in the club to be taking their shots from way beyond the trap field on the hill to the rear left of the trap house... about 100 yards. It was definitely competition shooting...

I still belong to that club, the tradition is alive and well still, just switched to a more "PC" version with Turkey Shoot. We do them 4 times a year and it is a total blast, but some of the old timmers still talk about the days when the targets had a mind of their own... I miss enough of the bright orange type that go on a relatively normal path so I'm fine with how it is.

Edit:I also believe there are plenty of other place to talk about hunting and I like that BE keeps the forums on topic. However I as a student of history and someone who is naturally curious, I like to know the origins of competitive shooting.

Exactly why is this thread still open. A moderator just posted the relevant rule and people are still talking about shooting animals.

Selective moderation?

I once shot a deer and tracked it for 5 miles. When I caught up to it another guy shot it. Turns out I hit the deer in the hoof! Lol
