Foxbat
The chip in the lug. Any particular defect? Edited October 3, 2014 by Foxbat
jid2
Improper timing. All the edges of the lugs look worn. The barrel isn't dropping far enough down/back. Edited October 3, 2014 by jid2
Glk21C
Is that the gun you were shooting this past weekend?
Foxbat
Yes. The chip happened some weeks ago, and seems to be stable since then.
Foxbat
If this is indeed the timing issue, what could be done to remedy it?

Aircooled6racer
Hello: Could you have gotten some sand in there that caused the barrel to pick up, then causing the chip? Is there a scratch on the barrel? Yes, I would give the gun builder a call to see what they think. Thanks, Eric
Foxbat
I don't think so, the gun was never dropped, always moderately clean, and there is no corresponding mark on the barrel lug, that I could see. That was also one of my hypothesis'. I will, of course, send it to the builder, just not yet... but I curious what could have caused it. I like to understand what is happening. openclassterror
Read this: http://www.schuemann.com/Portals/0/Documentation/Webfile_1911%20Timing.pdf Great find! Excellent reading for anyone who tinkers with 1911/2011s. A great supplement to the Kuhnhausen books.

Dranoel
I'm seeing a lot of unburnt powder in the frame lugs in that pic. Is it possible the powder granules are preventing the barrel from properly locking up?
openmike
These guys are right. This is a timing problem. That lug mauling is just a wake up call to premature wear and tear or worse. Forget the big chip. All the radial slide lugs are peening over. Let the builder make it right. He will sleep better!
kcobean
Wow. Can you post a pic of your barrels upper and lower lugs and the inside of your frame? Very curious to see what those look like as well.
Foxbat
I will try to take the shot of the barrel lugs later. Please realize, that the builder is not hiding, I am just trying to educate myself.
kcobean
Yup, trying to learn right along with ya. I'm just curious to see what the barrel lugs look like after doing that much damage to the slide lugs.

kcobean
Thanks Foxbat. Looks like there's been a good bit of rounding/abuse on the upper barrel lugs as well. Based on how I understand the timing to work, it looks like your gun is either unlocking too late, or is not unlocking all the way (i.e. when barrel is at full down/unlock position, the fronts of the barrel lugs are hitting the slide lugs as the slide moves rearward). I'm still pretty new to the 1911/2011 game, but that seems to make sense. Will be interested to hear what your builder has to say about this.
