meatsauce
I decided to replace the tile in my laundry room. Now, I've never tiled before in my life but I figured it couldn't be too difficult to learn and it's only like 40 square feet. The tile came up easy enough. Now how do I get up the thin-set? The kid at Home Depot sold me a little 4" wide scraper with a blade but its not doing much for me. Any advice?
Powder Finger
I got one of these and it works quite good. http://www.homedepot.com/p/QEP-7-Inch-Floor-Scraper-75006Q/100193678 you need to sharpen the blade, I rough shaped the edge on a bench grinder then finished with a file. GuildSF4
The scraper mentioned by Powder Finger works, belt sander or pad sander (large one) work also. Good mask and safety glasses especially for sanding.
sperman
If you have wood sub-floor, it might be easier (and quicker) to replace the subfloor, thin set and all.
GuildSF4
If you have wood sub-floor, it might be easier (and quicker) to replace the subfloor, thin set and all. I have done that also. Takes way less time on wood and what is your time worth?

meatsauce
That scraper is WAY bigger than what they sold me at the hardware. I bought this little guy... http://www.homedepot.com/p/QEP-4-in-Razor-Scraper-62900Q/100194275#.UhuQ_vrD_rc It doesn't do anything
Powder Finger
Got some of those also, they work pretty good for corners and tight spots.

titandriver
Should be a piece of cake for you on a concrete slab with the larger scraper!

DonT
I would suggest that you go to your local rental store and tell them you need an electric chipping gun/demo hammer with a bit for removing thinset on concrete. It should take less than an hour for 40sf. Good luck.
Powder Finger
an hour? I'll bet a D8 or 10 can do it in 10 minutes Edited August 27, 2013 by Powder Finger
