sandrooney
Hope this is ok. I asked in reloading and never got a response. Are 9mm dies the same as 38 super except for the size die and crimp die ? What shell plate for 38 sc will the 9mm plate work ? Thanks, SR
PaulW
No different dies completely. 9mm is a tapered walled case while 38 super is a straight walled case. She'll plate will be the same, different buttons.
sandrooney
I was told that I would have to use a .223 shell plate for 38 super comp but you are saying that I can use the 9mm shell plate with no problem ? Thanks for the help Paul SR
PaulW
Someone else may chime in....not 100% dure on the shell plate for sc, super and 9 are the same.
Shadyscott999
9mm shellplate may or may not work for SC. Mine would not. Give it a try and see. I had to get a 223 shellplate.
superdude
Results with shell plates and 38 Super Comp vary. I've used the 9mm shell plate (Dillon 650) with good luck for many, many thousands of 38 SC.
MisterB
My results trying to load super comp with a 9mm shell plate didn't work out well on my 650. I got the correct caliber conversion and it runs like like a champ. It was a constant fight with the wrong shell plate.
sandrooney
MisterB What problems were you having ? I am loading with a 550b and haven't got my 38 super dies yet to try it. I did prime one and it all lined up good and primed fine and the plate rotates fine with the case in it. I can't see why it won't work. DaninSC
I ordered my 550 set up for SuperComp and they sent it with a #3 shell plate, also marked for 380 acp. it's a No.3. My 9mm shell plate is a No. 5 SuperComp and 38 Super dies are the same, just not the 9mm ones. When in doubt, call Brian...
Steve RA
Super Comp is rimless, Super is semi-rimmed and that is the difference in the bases.
G-ManBart
Super Comp is rimless, Super is semi-rimmed and that is the difference in the bases. Sort of true. 38SC actually has about .003 rim per side, compared with .010 for normal Super. Compare that with a true rimless where rim diameter is the same as case diameter at the front of the extractor groove. The only version I know of to really be rimless is Lapua's offering, rarely seen here.
sandrooney
I measured the rim on a 9mm and a super comp and they are the same. SR
Jaxshooter
The .223 shell plate works the best with 38 SC.
CocoBolo
I used 9 mm shell plate on Hornady LNL for 38SC and TJ, works great. The .223 would not work. In the 650 I used the 9 mm shell plate for many thousands of rounds, don't have a .223 for the 650 so can't say.
