DavidG34
The Dawson magwell along with some other add on magwells are nice but keep in mind that some will require extended mag bases on your magazines to be able to seat them consistently. SauconValley Shooter
Good Morning, We have a Dawson ICE, heavy (brass) magwell on a G24 for USPSA Limited. Recently, I put the ICE light (aluminum) on a G35 for IDPA ESP. The ICE uses a plastic cover for the bottom of the magwell. This covers the attachment fasteners, is a slick surface and can be replaced. The whole unit can be removed if you would like to use your Glock for SSP. We have not had a problem seating stock factory magazines and it fits in the box.

ICON_636
I've got a Dawson Ice on my Glock 34 that I shoot in IDPA ESP and don't have any problems seating the mags. When I want to shoot USPSA Production I simply remove the magwell.

SDM
Will Dawson sell only the aluminum insert?
waktasz
The insert isn't aluminum, it's polymer. Unless you are talking about the "butt plug"...then I'm not sure. They don't offer it on their site but you never know.
SDM
No, my magwell attaches to a brass insert, which I assume is the heavy model. Since this wouldn't be legal, I'd like to buy just the insert from the light one. For some reason I was thinking it was aluminum. You mentioning that it's plastic gives me an idea. I think I'm going to try using one of the plugs. I'm sure I've got an extra somewhere.
waktasz
I see what you mean now. I think the light magwell uses a steel, or still maybe even brass plug. It is much smaller than the heavy magwell plug. Best thing to do would be to call them. I would imagine they have some spares somewhere. That being said...I think the magwell itself on the heavy model is brass as well, so switching to a lighter plug won't get you legal in IDPA. SDM
My magwell is aluminum and the brass plug is fairly small, maybe 3/4" in length. I just always thought since the plug is brass it was the heavy model. I bought it used and it wasn't described as heavy or light.
waktasz
You have the normal one then. The plug on the heavy version is like 2.5 inches long and shaped like a spike to fill the entire backstrap area. SDM
And the normal one is IDPA legal? Thank you for helping with this. It's been helpful.
waktasz
I hope so . I've been using mine with no issues since August, but then again I could have been using my heavy one as well. No one has taken a close enough look at it to have noticed a difference at any local matches or even the two sanctioned matches I've shot with it. firemantj
This looks like a good thread to ask a question (I appologize if this is construed as hijacking). What makes the ICE not fit on a 19? Is it something that can be fitted with some TLC?
waktasz
I don't have a 19 so I'm just speculating... Does the 19 have the Lanyard hole? Is the channel in the backstrap shaped differently? It also appears that the bottom of the grip is shaped differently and on an angle. The magwell sort of hooks onto the front of the front strap too to provide tension. firemantj
The 19 does have a lanyard hole. As far as the angle of the bottom of the grip, it's the only Glock I own right now, so I can't compare. But here is a crappy cell phone picture. firemantj
Is there anyway a moderator can cut out my question and move it to the gunsmithing or general equipment section? Or should I just make a new thread?
