  1. hi I load WIN cases mainly and some times the odd case gets past me... I know when I load a CBC 9mm case. It feels very different. I have not measured the case, mainly because I am sure I won't get an accurate measurement... I think the case walls are a wee little thicker and the bullet takes more effort to be pressed in place. yup it comes out a little longer... I get 2 thousands more... think of it as normal? miranda
  2. I've seen that. But, honestly, I didn't spend any time watching the shirt get ripped open, I was too busy watching the gun in her hand. kevin c Kevin why am I laughing? oh what a picture! I would have thought she would have dropped the pistol in all the excitement.... v miranda
  3. it may seem an odd way to say it, I don't 'look' with my non-sighting eye. it is open.... v miranda
  4. Guys, I suspect the ascorbic acid is the trick here. v
  5. you will get more advice than you will want on the speeding ticket. ummm I strongly recommend you fight the improperly written ticket. use lawyer officer needs to know that he can be caught in perjury... cops that lie are _dangerous_ ! If your son can learn not to speed, I approve. Tell him a little slower will go a long way to avoiding the problem. The two are NOT related. Where I live, a car doing the speed limit is rare. and I have speeding tickets, most are mine, at least one was not, but I understand why the officer thought that I was hotfooting it. and others have gotten tickets that I may have deserved too. our streets have many perils.... One way to avoid getting a ticket (the best way) is to make sure there are others going faster (I never am on a road alone anymore....) In this case the officer was writing a 'hoper' In Other words... I hope this fool pays instead of fighting... My bet is the officer does not showup for the court date. If he does, the perjury problem may come up. He will avoid that. When the dust has settled, Your son can use the first-speeding-ticket-gets-forgiven-school for the first ticket he deserves. If he is smart, it will be a long time. v miranda
  6. Hi all, I liked this contest. it was the first one where I felt I had a chance. all the others had someone post ant answer I knew before I had the chance to post. Given the wide range of the readers here I can't think of anything that I would have a better chance. perhaps the other un attributed quotes can be a standing challenge? something like go 2 more and each for 50 dollars. any of the four, once 2 more are done give us the rest. I should mention I haven't a prayer for getting that challenge either... in any case, I am looking forward to this month's challenge. v miranda
  7. I had a few minutes to kill and googled the book title. since I don't own it I thought I'd see if that might point me to a book I do own. I found out a few things. one is that there are many failed Bruce Lee links.... the other is this quote attrubuted to Bruce Lee. the second half is very useful to me today. -The tools, your natural weapons, have a double purpose: 1.) To destroy the opponent in front of you - annihilation of things that stand in the way of peace, justice and humanity. 2.) To destroy your own impulses caused by the instincts of self-preservation. To destroy anything bothering your mind. Not to hurt anyone, but to overcome your own greed, anger and folly. Jeet Kune Do is directed toward oneself. while I have not found any quotes, I have found a very useful tool for a problem I am trying to resolve. Thanks.
  8. ummm... where do I go to get this tee shirt ? v
  9. Hi all, That first quote is not in Practical Shooting. I have skimmed the book for the others. If they are in it I missed them, as I was re-reading I come see why the other quotes are here, Brian makes a lot of statements that are similar. I thought maybe since recently read Engineer to Win that Carrol Smith said the first quote, I was not able to find it.... I can't find my copy of John Muir's volkswagen repair guide for the likes of me. I think it may still be boxed up with the zen-o-motorbike-fixin... I will try to find the box. I once met a man who told me all you need is all you know. sigh I have wondered what I know... For, over my years I have discovered that books remember things far better than me. v miranda
  10. I am hunting! geez ! please don't challenge him to call it early! I know I read that first quote somewhere. the others just seem vaguely familiar.... v miranda
  11. Well I am looking for a new shooting partner.... well pardner , I think that alkidale-rabbit has run off with the lead.... I'm gonna do some research... v
  12. Pat Harrison, please forgive the blatant snitch. (imitation is the sincerest form of flattery....) It'll be fun to see if any of the quotes "sound familiar" to anyone. If so, the guesses should be fun for all. Good luck! 1. This constant urge for speed, through which the human race has ever sought for faster and better ways of doing things, has, no doubt, been responsible for man's gradual, but none the less steady, progress and improvement. Stephen Hawking I like this one, some how I think a better attribution exists.... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 2. You should bear in mind that your own eyes are unique and differ from other peoples eys as much as your face differs from their faces. Marty Feldman Real good guess! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 3. If you can accept that the fact that pressure is normal, and that it can be controlled, then the problem is not such a great one to solve. this quote is why Viagra was invented.... =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 4. Too much thought about the mechanics is a bad thing for anyone's game. ever heard of: Super Dave Osborne? =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 5. It is easy to prepare the body for a contest; it is difficult to prepare the mind. Hannibel Lechter this is a truly great guess! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= If I can't win with correct answers, maybe I can win for most creative maybe together we can win it ! hohohohoho just what you need! a partner !
  13. a possibly recognizable tune.... Hippo birdy two ewe Hippo birdy two ewe Hippo birdy deer ewe Hippo birdy two ewe many more !
  14. Hi all, most of my reading is about auto racing surprisingly similar to competitive shooting... I am truly guessing these answers... 1: smokey yunich 2: reads like something Brian enos said 3: bernoulli 4:robert persig 5:they call him TGO ummm letham ? v miranda
  15. I am new to shootin' and I also hook the trigger guard. I use the left index finger to help push the grip into my right hand. It feels comfortable? I suspect it can cause problems however. the only trick to stop doing it... Try hard to notice what happens that causes you to hook the guard. for me It seems to be as part of firing rapidly. the faster I aim and pull trigger the more likely I am to reach out to the trigger guard. so for me I think the root cause is that I want to feel like I have good control of the pistol. This means my answer is firmer grip with my right hand. ( I don't like this answer....I'll explain later) I stop reaching out to hook guard when I have a firm grip. the reason I don't like it is that my firmer right hand grip at speed is less accurate.... I found I was chuckling at myself at the realization that I really wanted my left hand to hold the pistol and my right hand index finger to smoothly pull trigger ... hard to to well.... so pay close attention to you when you are shooting and try to see why you hook the trigger guard. v miranda
  16. you got the bullets before you ordered them ? .... previous day .....
  17. guys, this thread needs to be in the humor section. I've been having a ball reading! funny... I take my dremel or diegrinder or welder to most any project. The guns, however, seem sacred. I guess I have to get more weapons. or at least one real basket case.... hmmm... is there a pistol bone-yard? v miranda
  18. Hi Allgoodhits, I see a sierra reloading manual on e-bay for 5 - 10 ish dollars, that one? hi BSeevers, a tape? had not thought of that.... time to go look. Hi acolt45, My Brother once described me as 'deliberate', I will tell you it took a long time for me to agree with his evaluation... I hope you are smiling, I thought it funny. Have no fear I am very careful with my firearm and the ammunition I feed to it. The failures to fire were struck by the firing pin. Given that I used a lot more pressure to seat my next set of primers, and that all went bang, I have to assume that I did not seat the failure to fire primers properly. that problem is apparently solved. the beeswax problem.... is also fixed.... assuming I stay careful. I was a lot more careful applying the wax and I also wiped each round as I made it. all rounds went into the chamber and went bang. the lead/beeswax rounds were smokier. hmmmm... what did I Inspect? I start with my head. am I awake? distracted? free of alcohol? debilitating nostrums? have on my seat belt? (I always make jokes....) Then I turn to the process of making rounds. Frankly, I decap with care but when washing cases I am afraid I allow my mind to wander. I look over the case before I start to load it. and I look at the powder before I set the bullet in place. I measure the amount of powder If I have any problems during the previous four stations (4 hole turret) and I check oal on the first 5 and maybe every 20 after that. Gunners and airliner pilots share this: it is not a good thing to be the first at the scene of an accident. I promise to do my best not to blow you up with my reloads. Is there another way to get wax on a bullet other than dipping? I roll them in hot wax and then let them cool on a tray I made. once there I fan them with a propane torch( a heat gun will do the same) to knock off any excess. once cool I snap them up and clean the wax ring off the base. I should pointly clean the bullet base? After all the trouble involved in making lead bullets, I am leaning toward copper jacketed and plated. v
  19. Hi all, I sent 100 flying down range today. was all I had time to toss. all went bang. thanks very much for the help. is there a book that is considered required for reloaders? v miranda
  20. Hi Lee, I went and did some reloading yesterday. checked anvils, too. I know this is blue territory, so I didn't mention my red turret press because I don't want that to be in the discussion. the primer station is all my arm and feel, there is no cycle stop here. Between what Flexmoney said about crushing the primers in there... and ... that I have done a lot of reading before I tried to reload (clearly, not enough....) and ... where I previously seated primers, I can now see that I did not press the primers in hard enough to 'flatten' them. The primers have a radius that gets reduced and that way you know they are seated. That last part is an instruction that I don't recall reading.... Please believe me when I say I noticed how common my problem is. I had no idea before I asked.... 'tis why I asked.... I hope to get to the range this weekend and test my newfound cap crushing talent. Hi forty5 got it, rounds into towel and shake. but if I am shaking what gets the wax off the rounds? Ok OK I won't quit my day job..... ya know, shaking a bag-o-ammo makes me nervous, maybe I'll try a wooden scraper. enh. who am I kidding? I think I'll spring for a tumbler soon. To all, after 100 rounds of just pressing in primers, why did it take me not one, but, two live primer decappings to realize I should remove the decapper? v miranda edit to fix misspelled name
  21. wow, inorder I guess.... what? me finish a sentence..... Hi George, I think my cheap soul won't let me leave duds sitting in a coffee can. my failures to fire were dissassembled. including decapping.... from the reading through the replies I gather that taking duds back home is normal. I did not make a second attempt to fire any dud. I will try that next time. I will repeat this line because so many have given me the same instruction.... I solemnly swear I will never attempt to reseat a primer of a live round. Please understand that the promise is real. and that me making it is funny, well, to me anyway. I am extremely wary of ammunition. It deserves a lot of respect. In contrast, a gun with out ammo is not too scarey to me, but the two together are frightening. Hi BSeevers, I think I can beef up the reloading bench.... it is not bad, it is just that better is better... I had read here that seating primers requires a feel, so after I seated a few that had _slight_ dents I thought I was in the right place. when in doubt, press harder ... I primered all the cases as one run in an attempt to get a feel. I think I'll do that again to develop better feel. Flexmoney, I've lurked here a long time, ( I forgot my username and password from long ago...) your posts have always been good reading. I solemnly swear I will never attempt to reseat a primer of a live round. my thrifty side and fear of ammo that has been told to fire, means I will disassemble the duds. I am going to press the primers in harder, with any luck I'll be rid of this problem. The chamber was clean as far as I can tell. I cleaned anyway, when I got home. The lead/beeswax problem was in the middle of the run of ammo. I was shooting my reloads and factory. I was looking for related follow on problems after that happened. I am going to have to find a better way to put on beeswax. I think warmer bullets may be the remedy. Plots for beefier loading bench are being ploted. Hi, RodgerT, I think I want to be at your range's cleaning day. It sounds like fun! Hi, CHRIS KEEN 10,000.... reload enough.... geez, I thought the 3-k brass I have gathered over the past few years was good... I clearly have a lot to learn. so bench work needs a cabinet.... more plots to add to my plotting. inch thick plywood anyone? Hi Lee Bell, defective primers is a possibility sure. and I can't do much about that directly. I can make sure of the seating. If after that, I still have a 3 to 4 percent FTF then I'll blame the primers. I purchased the recently from a busy sporting goods store, I have to assume they are resonably fresh. I caught the decapped primers and all were shiney and reddish on the inside. all of the cases were decapped by me and yes I found a Bearden 9mm case dangit! ummm as much as I like company, please don't repeat my defects? I hate FTF.... only good thing about it is to learn I am not heeling. I'd prefer the bang! Hi Allgoodhits, I solemnly swear I will never attempt to reseat a primer of a live round. I will check the FTF rounds for maker, most of my brass is Win picked up from my factory ammo. I have used other manufacturers and I am sure I have picked up some other's brass thinking it mine.... What is the proper pocket depth for the primer? I can't recall seeing that dimension. The one round that was not hit by the firing pin was a beeswax jam.... the slide did not get into firing position.... I didn't want to tinker at the range so I took it home. the bullet lube had rolled up next to the case when I seated the bullet. I did not see it there. and I'll add inspecting the primers for anvils to my list of things to check. man! I didn't think reloading would be all this fuss! Thanks guys, I now have more to do.... I am blaming yall!! hohohohohohohohohohoho I promise to let you know how the next batches go..... I expect nothing but new problems! I'll see what I can do about some photos. v miranda
  22. hmmm, Hi George, So far I have not had a factory round fail. I do think it is my reloading. I can face the pain of my own failure, my ego went pffft shortly after the first failure to fire. I recall checking that all primers were at least flush with the bottom of the case. I am going to have to find a way to press the primers in a little more. the primer cap has a good dent in it and the inside of the cap is red, once I read 'primers running away from the firing pin' I realized the bridge could run away as well, giving the same effect. the solution is the same, seat primer deeper. how does that line from starwars go? "use more force, dork" I'll try more squeeze. Hi open17, Ok, I guess calling them squibs is wrong. What is worse, is I still have to worry about them as well as no bangers. I took my failure to fire rounds home, normal? For a firework I water it, what should I do with these? thanks guys, I appreciate the help. v miranda
  23. How do all, I am learning to reload. I made up a few batches of 9mm luger. I made about 100 rounds all wsp primers and hp-38 10x 124 gr lead lubed with beeswax. --- 3.5gr powder. oal 1.140 10x fmj 115gr. --- 4.3 powder oal 1.160 the rest were 147 gr. copper plated --- 3.5 gr powder oal 1.140 my problem is that 4 did not fire. the fmj's all went. one was the beeswax kept the slide from battery.... it did not get hit by the firing pin. The other three were struck by the firing pin and no bang. I pulled the bullets and all three had powder. any Ideas for what may be the cause? most of my cases dial calipered at .740 the three suspects are at .748 this is under the case spec of .754 btw what do yall do with the squibs normally? v miranda
