  1. I was the lead instructor for my department duty weapon switch that concluded about four months ago. We switched from HK USP40 fullsize and compacts to gen 4 22s and 23s. It was about 400 officers. A vast majority selected 22s. We had zero issues with the 22s which accounted for about 300 guns. We had two 23s that had erratic ejection and occasional brass to the face issues. All of these guns were reliable even the ones with the ejection issues worked every time. I have a very early 17g4 that has been 100% reliable through the thousands of rounds it has seen. This gun is supposed to be the devil gun. It still has the 336 ejector, the none beveled slide (for the recoild spring), and the original heavy spring. In full disclosure I have recently switched to an aftermarket rod and spring, but it was not for reliability issues. I just wanted to tune the recoil impulse for quicker follow up shots. I can't explain why one person has issues and others don't. It could be the guns or it could be the technique. I am naive enough to say there were not problems, but I have yet to see any gen4 guns no work. I'm am around more guns, matches and shooters than most so maybe I have just be lucky.
  2. Remember that the long range targets in 3 gun are usually at least 3-4 moa. I have same scope as the OP but with the circle dot post reticle. I have not had any issues with any targets in matches being covered up by my crosshairs to this point. I have shot out to 500 on 3-4 moa targets without issues. Matt
  3. We have four stages. We have the ability to shoot rifle on every stage if that is how the stages are designed. Rifle shots can be 5 to 400. I would say it is normal to have rifle shots 200-300 yards every match. We have lots of steel we own and lots of steel that is already on site at Academi. If you search YouTube for tidewater 3gun or blackwater 3gun you should be able to find examples of past matches. If you have more questions or need further info email me at matt(dot)t3g(at)gmail(dot)com Matt
  4. I am the range master for the Tidewater 3gun matches at Academi. I can answer any of your questions. As far as the ride is concerned from Fort Eustis you are pretty centrally located for the matches in your new area. There are 3gun, IDPA, USPSA, steel challenge, and other types matches all around you. I have regular shooters that drive four and five hours to shoot our match. We have occasional shooters from way farther. I believe we have one of the better monthly club matches out there. Matt
  5. The problem with this thread is to many people are saying their rifles are "doubling". They in fact are not "doubling" they are being bump fired. The rifles are being bump fired because they are not being held securely again the shoulder. I had the same thing happen with mine while doing positional shooting and while sighting in. The issue was completely mine. I was not securing the rifle properly in my shoulder and the short reset was allowing it to happen. I have a few thousand rounds through both of my S3G triggers since diagnosing the cause of the problem and have had no issues. Matt
  6. I have found the opposite to be true. I have shot thousands of 193 at my steel. The distance you are shooting the targets plays a huge role in how long a target lasts. The target in your picture was either shot at extremely close distances for a rifle or with something other than 193. I try not to shoot any steel closer than 50 yards and I prefer longer. The truth of it is all steel rifle targets will wear as time goes on. If you start off with quality steel it will last longer. Matt
  7. The SPR reticle has it first hash mark at 2.5 mils. Which is about 9 moa. That will work out to about a 450 hold over. So you will have to guesstimate between 0-450 and again from 450 to around 600ish to the next hash. Matt
  8. Are you looking for a dedicated game gun? If so it will work but probably not the best choice. It has a light weight barrel which is not the best choice for a game gun IMHO. If you do buy one for a game gun then you would want to find a different muzzle device. Matt
  9. I have always hated this practice. It goes against everything we have been taught as young people learning to shoot. When I teach officers and my kids I stress that they are responsible for every round that comes out of their weapon. I have seen so many different shooters do it in a way that has made me cringe. I think that if this it is done it should be at the target area or stands. I have seen guys fire rounds when the shotgun wasn't even on their shoulder. I think the guys running matches that don't allow you to deck a shotgun that is on safe should consider what they are allowing people to do as opposed to allowing the safety do its job. What would a spectator think if they saw someone using this practice. Matt
  10. Larry, Since you are being so forthcoming with things, what type of targets are you using for long range? In particular targets over 250ish. Matt
  11. Larry If I decide I am going to just shoot two weapons during a stage do I have to bring the third weapon just because or can I leave it in the cart? The reason I ask is some of the stage descriptions say to start with all three. Matt
  12. Dean and crew, I really appreciate your hard work for both matches. It was very well organized and that added to the enjoyment. I thought the stage were well thought out and challenging. You guys have truly mastered the art of running a team match. This was my second year shooting the match and I have really enjoyed the format. Jansen, You did an amazing job lining up the sponsors. Anyone that has taken on that task understands the tireless and usually thankless effort it takes. Great job. Matt
  13. I am considering buying one and I want to find out who is working on them. If you have what issues have you had if any? Matt
  14. I am member of one of the teams that is on the short side of the scoring system also, but I'm not butt hurt about it. We are currently 11th and if it was just time based we would be 7th. It is what it is. I had a great time and I enjoyed seeing friends and shooting with my team mates. I want to finish as well as everyone else, but I am not gripe and complain about it now. I think we sometimes lose perspective of what is really important. This is about have fun and enjoying ourselves. This is one of the big reasons I am against cash pay out in matches. It changes people and sometimes brings out a side in them we did not know existed. Would I be happy to win a few thousand dollar? Sure, but not at the expense of alienating other shooters a ruining the match for my team mates. I would like to think we are all better than this. Matt Oh and Dean I am still willing to buy you a few cheese burgers and fries to take my teams penalties back.
  15. One thing that frustrates me is dealing with wind at longer ranges. I have been struggling with reading and applying proper hold. The range I shoot at seems to always be windy. I have been able to shoot under 1 moa out to 500 when the wind plays along. Matt
  16. There are two things that are possible issues. The first and most likely is the ejector. Glock has made a new ejector for there 9mm guns. It has solved most of the problems. The other is the extractor. Glock has changed them and they can be finicky. If you call Glock they will get you the new parts or have you send in the gun for the upgrades. You may also find it necessary to beef your loads up some to help. Matt
  17. The Vortex viper line of scope are really good scopes. They are very clear and the reticle is very usable. The only down side I have seen is the exposed turrets. I fixed this problem by buying the HS version. I have been very pleased with it. The illumination is not great, but I only use it in low light scenarios so there is no problem for me. Matt
  18. I agree with you, however there was no specific rule so it had to go to the MD for a call. In my mind and the rules of my matches it would be a DQ for having a loaded gun prior to the start of the stage unless under the instructions of the RO, but it was not my match or rules. I guess it is not worded well. The downside with 3gun is there are no true governing body or consistant rules. Most every 3gun match has a different set of rules. They are similar but not the same. 3gun is also different than ISPC/USPSA in regards to reshoots and how and when they are given. Many of the DQs in 3gun are given after the shooter has completed a stage, like when a shooter grounded a unsafe weapon or the safety came off unless a safety violation (180 or ND) ocurred during the shooting of the stage. My issue is not with the DQ or not, it is with the MD implying the RO was the one at fault. Matt
  19. Well lets actually get the other side of the story from the RO since it was me. As the shooter started the stage and immediately racked his shotgun a round was ejected from the chamber. It did not dribble out, it came out in a manner consistant to hand ejecting or shooting a round from a shotgun. The shotgun worked for the entire stage, so it was not broken, ie rounds coming directly from the mag tube and falling out of the ejection port. I let the shooter continue because I did not know if it was simply a penalty or a DQ. There was no safety issue at any time during the shooting of the stage. After the shooter/team was done with the stage, I went to his team mate and made him aware of the situation and started looking for the MD for a ruling (penalty, stage DQ, or match DQ). I was not able to find the MD immediately because he was not on the stage. I did find the MD a few minutes later while he was talking to the shooter about the same incident. I explained to him the situation and I told him I did not know what his match rule was for this situation. He stated he did not have a rule, and asked me my opinion. I told him at the matches I run it would be a DQ, but it was ultimately his call. Now there are other things going on that the OP/MD did not say about the shooter, but that is between him and I. I am utterly insulted by the insinuation I did anything wrong, as opposed to the shooter taking responsiblity for his mistake. In response to the OP's listed concerns. I have been to (shot and ROed) many matches (local, state, and national level) and at no time has an RO checked the chamber of a preloaded and decked on the stage shotgun. The shooter is responsible for the condition of his equipment. He was given clear instructions and did not follow them. There is no doubt in my mind or the witnesses that the round was ejected from the chamber. I let the shooter continue to shoot because there was no posted rules for this situation (penalty, stage DQ, or match DQ), and he did not commit any safety violations during the stage. He was given the benefit of the doubt until I could confer with the MD. lastly since the stage did not have a load and make ready portion then it did not happen then. As I told the MD at the match I did not care what the call was DQ or not, but he had to make a call. The shooter, the witnesses, and I all know what happened. The conversation that was held between the MD and I addressed all the issues. I think that there are other reasons the group of shooter in York are talking about this situation, and it isn't because of anything I did or didn't do. Matt
  20. Holy crap. It is a Glock for god sakes. Look it over for defects, clean it, and then shoot it. If it was a LE trade in then the only that was probably worn was the finish. There is not reason to replace anything unless it truly needs it. Matt
  21. With all your requirements you really only have one choice. Luckily the Burris Mtac is a good optic. The only problem with the scope the center dot, but it is still very usable. Matt
  22. It never hurts to have some buck available. A lot of the matches I go to allow you to use buck. Matt
  23. The injection molded are more versatile. They work with the bullets facing either way, and you can use any mag type. Matt
  24. I wear mine backwards for everything, but I mainly shoot 3gun. I keep it backwards all the time just to be consistant. Matt
  25. What is it that you want the. Ra scope to do that the TR24s aren't doing. Matt
