I’m not sure sub-sonic would be a good choice. They don’t generate enough pressure to properly move the bolt. Aguila HV is an excellent round for a test. Not expensive. Its nose is rounded similar to AR Tactical. 1255 fps so it will move the bolt. A bit dirty but okay for testing. You mentioned the Wiland barrel. When several of us were trying this barrel (5” and sleeved) we used the Kidd minus 10 recoil spring to compensate for the lower pressure. Not clear what you did. In a 16” barrel, we find the standard spring is better to properly move the bolt….especially forward to strip the round off the mag and chamber it. I don’t think this has been mentioned. @Gregg K has a lot of experience with this and uses a plus add spring.

Sounds like a great set up. Easy to understand why he draws a lot of shooters. That’s a cool picture. Momma probably not too far away

@greg9x21 congrats on running good matches. We also have 3 monthly matches at our range. 3 different MD’s. Curious your opinion if 3 matches at same location dilute the number of shooters at each match?

I just went to TK website. No feedlips. I found a link in a pull-down and it said product not available. I just tried to call them. Not taking live calls….asked for information for a call back. Also suggested sending them email. You may try to contact them. I’m curious what you find out.

We ( members) have availability to use different bays during the week but we have to set up and tear down. We practice using match commands, timer and tablet. Keeps us honest. It helps. Unfortunately there are a lot of ranges that are for match only. I hope Org does include the Top 20 Club info for all members. Interesting to read.

I’ve looked thru SCSA website on my phone. Can’t seem to locate the Top 20 Clubs. Is it hiding in plain sight? BTW……I’m envious of the permanent 8 stage setup. Can you practice there during the week?

It seems to me that Eastern PA, and the Eastern states in general, have a good showing for SC matches. I wonder if it’s due to a larger population base than west of the MS? San Antonio TX (my area) and the Austin I-35 corridor is growing but we are still spread out a bit.

@zzt good point. All Kidd barrels have the same chamber. It is a proprietary size. They will tell you it’s not a bentz or a sporter chamber, therefore somewhere in between. Most of us SC RFRO shooters use the Briley Raptor which is sporter chamber. I should note that Briley has improved their bore cutting and the sporter size is consistent and cleaner cut. @RickT if you have a Kidd barrel it is easy to check it with a sporter bit. Easy to enlarge if necessary.

One of our 3 monthly matches (3 MD's) is #20 on the Classifiers list. Our location/range, if that were a category, would be #6 for total Matches Held. Good to see that too. Wow......having 8 states that are permanently set up is super cool. Not having to set up and tear down and store is huge. Easy on the MD too. I had two interesting observations when comparing each sheet (check me out on #1, it's early and I did a quick scan): 1. Only one club was in the top 20 for Matches Held and Number of Competitors per Match: Riley Conservation Club. Ontelaunee Rod & Gun Club in PA had an amazing 117.75 competitiors per match but don't appear on the Matches Held or Total Competitors page. This club must not have many matches per year and when the do they have a great turnout. Am I looking at the data correcetly? Does anyone know? 2. I wonder if SCSA.org could split out the number of member's vs. non-members on the Competitors Per Match? I'm also glad to see SCSA.org publish this sort of data. It's nice to see what happening in other parts of the country. Also where to take a vaction next summer It was interesting to me to see the number of shooters

At this point you might consider buying one TK double mag to see how it works. I also tried the Ruger clear 10 rd mag….not reliable for me. I have 3 10/22’s and the TK doubles run in all 3. good luck

maybe so and absolutely true about the 22’s. I bought 2 1911 Dan Wesson PM9’s a few years ago. CZ had bought them. Nice tolerances. I think they were using Wilson Combat beaver tails then. McCormick mags that were well tuned. Fiber Optic front sights. I really liked shooting it until my eyes gave out. They sit in the safe. Now, I absolutely hate the Colt Government 9mm gun without the nice beavertail. I have one. Eats my thumb webbing up. It runs but just not for me. At the same time I bought a Wilson Combat 9mm that was/is nice. I haven’t shot that one very much. Sits in my safe. But I also have the 2011 STI Edge 9mm iron sight. MBX mags. Stippled grip. Super nice gun. I just can’t shoot limited anymore. It’s a no brainer for me which of these guns would get an optic…..the STI Edge hands down.

I decided to look thru Practiscore for Steel Challenge matches in my south and south central Texas…..Temple, College Station, Houston, Austin, San Antonio and Corpus Christie. Single Stack (SS) is virtually non-existent. Why when there are thousands of 1911’s in safes. A tuned 1911 is a sweet gun to shoot in 9mm. Steel Challenge is perfect for 10 rd mags. Iron sights in SC is dying….even Limited shooters are getting very few. The recent Area 8 had 224 ish guns there were no SS guns and 3 Limited (C,D class). Would the ability to add an optic for a LO division bring back 1911’s? Better chance than without optic. A friend asked me….If you were given the choice….with no cost to you, would you shoot your CO or your 2011/SAO gun in LO? My answer was 2011. But, I also own a couple of 1911’s that are well tuned that I would consider….that might be a lot of fun.

Sorry, in my insomnia state earlier, I am using 10/22 double clear mags that are 3 years old with a lot of rds thru them. Since I’m a bit paranoid about reliability, I have changed rotor springs if I feel one has may be getting sprung. Because of the way these springs are twisted inside the rotor, sometimes you may notice a slight deformity at the nut end. In fact, this was my gripe with factory rotor springs…..I would get a deformity on the nut end after one cleaning. BTW……if you buy Ruger black 10 round mags for the internals, search for the 3 mag package….. value packs.

I noticed you live in cold country. I’m in South Texas (hot). We avoid Aguila 22lr if it get cold….for us around 45 degrees. Aguila’s heavy wax can drag inside magazine. CCI mini mags for us is more reliable in cold weather. But we are also demanding 100% reliability in matches. Our opinion.

I’m assuming you’re referring to the black 10 rd 10/22 mags. I’m also assuming you frequently clean the bolt. Several of my friends and myself included have found the black 10 rd mag to be unreliable. One of my friends shoots the Kidd 10/22 carbine and almost stopped before he went to our conversion noted below: 1. Use Tandemkross clear double magazine. 2. Original Ruger orange rotor. 3. Original Ruger metal feedlips. 4. Tandemkross green rotor spring. 5. Tandemkross tool kit for magazine assembly. Snug rotor then 2 full revolutions and push nut into next slot. 6. Volquartsen extractor. Yep, it’s a factor for reliability. ALL of us have gone to VQ extractor. We have found the clear double mag body (not the triple) to fit the receiver much better than the original black 10 round mag. My TK double clear mags are 100% reliable (*). We also use only HV ammo in the 10/22 for reliability. (*) all 10/22 mags require reasonable maintenance. CCI burns cleaner than Aguila as example. So there is no magic number of rounds that I go by. After every practice session and match I will brush off the feedlips and blow out the mags. The clear mags allow you to see the internal wax ring that WILL build up over time. Wax will also get on the rotor grooves. I shoot matches every week and practice once a week (when not on injured reserve list ). I will tear down and clean all internals, including the wax buildup inside the mag body once I see the wax building up. It’s a pain but necessary (for all mags) if you want reliability. The Tandemkross tool kit is very useful. I would recommend buying one TK clear double body and 2 green rotor springs and try it out. Works for us. Good luck.

In today’s USPSA Downrange email, there is an interesting segment in the NROI Podcast #45 (37 minute mark) regarding Steel Challenge and Limited Optics. They commented that there have been many inquiries about where to find LO in Practiscore and their response that it’s not an approved division….yet. There are some additional comments as well.

I pulled out my 2011 STI Edge 9mm I used in outlaw steel matches several years ago. I had added skate tape to magwell sides to help lock in my grip. Iron sights so I haven’t shot it in a long time. Would built up skate tape on magwell be legal USPSA Limited Optics if I added an optic to the slide? Thanks

Thanks. Clearly I’m a SCSA guy. It’s probably too difficult to know how many shot their CO as Limited Optics vs how many shot an actual Limited Optics gun?

@ZackJones, I totally get where @Gregg Kis coming from. And I also agree that SC should have its own RO certification…..and it’s own rules. But after thinking about it, I believe that number 4 should be the choice. Why? 1. SC matches would not happen if not for volunteer RO’s without certifications (Level 1) who have run squads safely in 1,000’s of matches following SC rules. It’s a different game than USPSA. Interjecting another USPSA rule IMO should not be the basis of the decision to make a change in this case. 2. Safety. This should be the only basis for consideration. It is not a “gaming” issue. SC already has a rule for holstered guns and low ready long guns. SC also has a rule for a dropped guns after the make ready commands. Based on the recent interpretation of the rule in this forum for holstered guns, low ready long guns is okay and therefore safe, subject to the dropped gun rule. Are pistols, in SC, not equally as safe? 3. I don’t have the data, but I would guess that 99% of SC matches have had low ready long guns and low ready pistols with holstered guns without any thought from RO’s or shooters. Me included. 4. Just make a simple SC rules clarification to add low ready pistols along with existing low ready long gun. It’s clean and will not have a ripple effect for 99% of the matches trying to explain what the difference was between the two guns. I can just hear the the arguments now. So item 4 makes sense to me. I was looking at the Sig 2023 Handgun National that just finished. Looks like Limited Optics dominated the match. I only saw handful of Open and SS gun out of around 450 guns. Does anyone know if any shooters used their CO gun as LO in this match? Would it be interesting to know if there were and how many? Thanks
