  1. This thread got me to wondering..... HS-6 smokeles powder, per Hodgdon/Primex, has an autoignition temp of 374 F and above, well within the range of household ovens. Autoignition temp is exactly what it implies.....the temp at which a substance will burst into flame or ignite without external ignition source. Lead styphnate, the primary compound in primers, has a listed autoignition temperature of 626 F. So clearly its the powder that went first. Now it would reason that the first round to go would be the one that heated the quickest.....not necessarily the one round in the chamber or rev cylinder thats aligned with barrel. In a semi pistol, would the steel barrel/chamber that surrounds the chambered round act more as a net insulator in a hot oven, as compared to the rounds in the magazine? Which would go first is the question.....the chambered round or one in the mag? A round ignition in the mag only in a closed oven is less dangerous. BB .
  2. After two year of open, if I had it to do over again, I would not get any 140's. I just use 170's all around. BB
  3. Montana gold 124 JHP is 3750 per case MVZ You are right.....so thats where the 8% adjustment comes. I've only ever ordered 115MG jhp's in 9mm. BB
  4. not that it matters much, but the 115's SHOULD cost 8% less as there is less lead there. But the opposite is true on MG's web site......124jhp's are 2$ less per 4000count case. There are five pounds additional lead in a 4000 case of 124's versus 115's. BB
  5. Hmmmm.... I got like 1000 of them in the basement from when I first went open nine major, before I had a load figured out. I assume the sales volume just wasn't there to keep it up. BB
  6. with STI vertical mount, 6moa dot cmore at 17 yards, I zero off top of dot. I believe this keeps my shot within 2 inches of point of aim out to 50 yards. All shots beyond say 28 yards I try for top of dot as POI. Now if I could just get the freakin cmore to hold a zero. BB
  7. Are the mosquitoes plentiful and ferocious? Because they sure are 50 miles north of range. I'm thinking bug spray. BB
  8. Cycling can become addictive......I've got almost as much $$ into my mountain bike as my entire open gun setup. (combine the two for a stage some day somehow?) I think (?) at least with the better bikes, there no longer is a differentiation between mens and womens bike? Read online sources for setup of your bike to your body. Things like saddle position forward and back are important. Where your knee is relative to the pedal spindle on down-stroke etc. will really affect efficiency and comfort. BB
  9. Nine major is just bit hotter than the hottest 9mm ++P stuff off the store shelf. Just develop the loads carefully with a chronograph. You don't want to be shooting 190PF when 172 is more than adequate. BB
  10. I think the reason the WSJ ran the piece was more for the costuming and gangster theme, than is was for practical shooting skills/sport.......the article pic was eye grabbing. Unfortunately skillful pistol-craft remains a backwater event in the eyes of the press. BB
  11. FBI spokesman says hundreds of primers detonated in this story. Lets hope the regulatory fallout from this incident does not further restrict the lawful transport of ammunition in checked luggage. BB
  12. Heres the story. I wonder how the primers were packed? And could this lead to a no-ammo-period policy for checked luggage? Which would make match travel arrangements even more difficult. BB
  13. My understanding is that elemental lead cannot be adsorbed through the skin in meaningful amounts. As per Canadian Health and Safety Agency ....... Inorganic lead compounds are not known to cause skin irritation and are poorly absorbed through the skin. Other ways such as contaminated dust, cookware, food, smoking, etc are very effective ways of achieving lead poisoning. BB
  14. Maybe I'm inexperienced, but I have never had any reasonable load fail to group well enough for almost any uspsa match distances. Perhaps the cmore needed a slight tweak going from 115 to 124 bullets, but that's all. If the load is on PF, the group size is always more that good enough in my experience. BB
  15. Option one: Browning Buck Mark Lite (factory alloy barrel) 5.5in .22LR (six oz lighter than steel barrel version), Allchin mount, Cmore sight. Option two: Browning Buck Mark .22LR; Tactical solutions 5.5 in barrel; Allchin mount and Cmore sight. Option three: Browning Buck Mark .22LR; Tactical solutions 5.5 in barrel; Tac solutions Trail-lite compensator, Allchin mount and Cmore sight. Does the Trail-lite Tac. Solutions compensator on a 5.5in barrel 22LR really do much at all in managing muzzle flip? I mean we are hardly talking major PF ammunition here. Is the Tac. Solutions alloy barrel worth the marginal extra $ over the Buckmark factory lightweight with 5.5 alloy barrel? The Tac Sol barrel can be had in threaded version of course for the comp if I go that way. Some feedback please. BB edited correcting pac to trail
  16. Lead up 43% in the last six months......similar for copper. Would seem the current reckless fiscal and monetary policies are pushing money out of cash and into commodities of all types. Inflation is here now. Goes for food too......prices just have not yet adjusted retail. Oil at $84/barrel with the economy still flat lined? BB
  17. In other words, must we register at match hotel (3-6PM Oct 13 for production, limited, rev.) to get pass before allowed onto the range for viewing stages? Last yr some sort of paper pass was looked for upon entry? As I recall range opens at 1PM Oct. 13. Match registration 3-6 PM at Orleans same day. Sun sets around 6:07 PM. Just trying to make a plan. BB
  18. I have Peltor and Pro Ears. Both still work after more than six years. I do try and treat the Pro Ears with the respect a $300 piece of electronics deserves, and in return they have been very nice to me......so far. BB
  19. Case lube residue does not need to be removed in my experience...........so why would I go to the extra time and effort? The only downside is it sticks to finger tips after loading a bunch of rounds into mags......but it wipes off with a little effort. Silicone spray: I used to use this to lube up 22LR rounds so they would feed smoothly in my "ultimate cliploader." But.......soon I was experiencing a lot of dud 22lLR rounds. Seems the silicone wasted no time squeezing between the bullet and case, and "neutralizing" the cartridge powder. But I have never applied silicone to center-fire rounds. BB
  20. Unless one shoots minor in open or has a local connection making major 9mm for them for a fee, I would consider reloading to be a mandatory part of shooting in open division. I just don't see any other way unless and until AAA starts back up with .355 Super again. I have about 1000 of AAA's .355 super still around, and its good stuff, remarkably consistent, but recoils more violently than my own 9mmm major creations. BB
  21. Wind................it can really blow. How hard can it blow? Well it blew hard enough last yr to keep a popper from dropping when I hit it one inch low of circle area with minor ammo. Dust in dry eyes can be an issue for some. BB
  22. Effortlessly drilling the A zone bill drill style with A's at 0.3 splits aint bad - from 10 yds in production. A's are so much more valuable than C's anyway. Keep the A shots with 0.3 splits and focus more on faster and snappy transitions perhaps? Clamping down real hard with weak hand can help quicken sight picture recovery in my experience......but such forceful grip with weak hand does not come natural to me without real conscious effort. BB
  23. Exam room diagnosis on knees are often wrong. There only so much the orthopedic Doc can see and feel. Pro athletes are immediately scoped for 100% solid visual diagnosis. MRI's are often wrong too (know this first hand), but insurance often mandates this before arthroscopic surgery. You go into surgery thinking your ACL is torn (based on exam room and MRI), and it ends up being a torn medial meniscus, and the ACL is 100%. BB
  24. I would like that. But it would also shut down the bays I use for twice-weekly practice, as I am a member PSA. BB
  25. DC is smaller than you might think............look at the map boundaries. The outer freeway loops for the most part do not go through DC. BB
