  1. I didn't know they were making thesa again. I love 'em! Thanks for the link!
  2. My mechanic recommended to me Shaeffer's synthetic oil. Says it has higher lubricity and much higher temp ratings than Mobil 1. Anyone tried any Shaeffer's?
  3. It's interesting you say that. I have KNS pins on all my guns. Love 'em! Never heard a bad word about them----till now. Please explain what is the problem with them.
  4. One of my favorite ARs gives me a blast of gas in the face with every shot. Would changing the charging handle fix this? My other ARs have the Bravo Co. Gunfighter handle and don't seem to have that problem. Anyone familiar with the Gasbuster, and is it worth the near $100 they want for one?
  5. I have 2 of the JP "fire control", as they call them Zmego. I also have 2 of the Timney's. They're all excellent triggers. The Timney is drop in, and the JP takes hand fitting and adjusting the take up and overtravel screws, then using red Loctite to set the screws. For the money I'd get the JP. It comes with very good installation instructions and you should have no trouble doing the work yourself if your are just a little handy and not a total klutz. Almost forgot, I also have an Accuracy Speaks non-adjustable drop in that is a fine trigger.
  6. Yeah, the brass is hitting the base of the deflector and bouncing forward. I have the 2nd generation of the POF piston system. There are 2 settings and I have it on the lower setting. Does the same on the higher (more gas) setting. I just know the thing runs great, so where the brass ends up is minor. I suppose the worry might be that an empty could bounce back into the mechanism and cause a malfunction, but I've been shooting this gun for 5 years or so, including 4 MGM Ironman (Ironmen?), with no issues.
  7. Tru-Glo makes an adjustable choke that isn't ported. I have one, but don't often use it cause I just don't like that chunk on the end of the barrel. Been using IC exclusively for several years without complaints. I was ROing a 3gun match once and complimented an Open Class shooter on his knocking over the steel targets that most shooters were having trouble with. I asked him what choke/load he was using and he said cylinder/1 oz.! Makes me think that maybe what choke you use is less important than your shooting skill.
  8. I have a POF 18" piston that throws all empties forward at 1 to 2 o'clock. Seems pretty weired to me, but it functions darn near perfect, so I'm not complaining. My other DI AR's eject about like yours, and the brass deflecters have a copper patina to them. In other words, normal.
  9. Please explain why didn't you like it at 600? Lines too heavy?
  10. Well, my scope came and I have it mounted on my most accurate AR. Haven't made it to the range yet, but I can make a few comments on it. First, I like this scope. It seems to be very well made, compact, and fairly light for a 30mm tube. Optics, in general, are pretty good. Not quite up to my Meopta, but good. It seems to be true 1x on low power. Overall quality is excellent, and it seems to be rugged and solid enough to stand up to hard use in competition or tactical situations. Adjustments are positive and have a quality feel. I really like the reticle, at least the central part that has the hold over and ranging lines. The scope comes with a chart that gives your holding points for a variety of different loads in either 14.5 or 16 inch barrels. For 18 or 20 inch barrels I guess you have to interpolate. Illumination seems to be good, and the brightest setting (there are 5 brightness settings in red or green) appears to be visible in bright light. I will qualify that, though, since I haven't taken it out to the range yet, and standing on my front lawn pointing an AR around, even in Idaho, would most likely bring some unwanted attention! On the negative side. Like I said, the optics are good, but not exceptional. On 5x the eye box is pretty tight. Move your cheek weld too much and things get pretty fuzzy around the edges. I don't aim with the edges, though, and I think in use this would be pretty minor, if noticeable at all. So, although the Weaver may not be quite up to a Swaro, it is light years better than my Millett DMR which sits in a box because, frankly, it sucks! Just looking through it, I don't necessarily agree that the stadia lines are too thick. In fact, I think that they could have made the heavy lines that come in from the left, right, and bottom a bit heavier. On 1x the reticle appears pretty fine. Using the illumination helps with this and the center reticle can be used like a red dot sight on 1x. Without illumination it might be easy to lose the reticle on some backgrounds or low light. The designers of FFP scopes face a dilemma of getting the right balance of reticle size on the ends of the power range. In this case they didn't do bad, but if those outer lines were more heavy, it would make this a better scope for close range over a wider range of conditions. Those heavy lines aren't needed and can be ignored on the higher power, so it wouldn't matter if they were overly thick. Also, they could have added another vertical bar from the top. The heavy lines from all sides would help more to draw your eye to the center. I don't understand this German cross hair type of reticle, though I know it's popular. For me, the red illumination is more visible than the green. This may be a function of my eyes, and someone else might have a different opinion. But if they got rid of the green there would be more room on the dial for more brightness levels in red. Altogether I really like this new scope. It's a very good scope for the money. If it performs like I think it will it will be on my rifle for a very long time.
  11. I took a shooting class from Leatham back in '88, but he didn't mention that titanium hammer strut. It's obvious now that, although he took my money, he was holding back on his secrets to success! He was afraid his students would beat him! I'll show him now. I'll get one of those hammer struts and install it in my Glock! It's taken 24 years, but now that I know his secret I'll show him who's the shooter!
  12. For factory loads, Federal American Express 55 gr. is hard to beat for a general all-round load. Or Fed. XM193.
  13. I think there are a lot of mounts that will return to, or very near, to zero. The trick is to re-mount the scope in the same manner each time. Make sure that the lugs on the mount or rings are in direct contact with the rear surface of the lug (the same lug it was mounted to previously) on the rail. I've had pretty good luck, even with cheap $15 Weaver rings, returning to at or near zero if I'm very careful to put the rings back in the same slot, and push forward on the mount to engage the mount lugs with the rear surface of the rail lugs as I tighten the mount screws, or levers, or whatever. $200 mounts are nice to have, but not absolutely necessary to get a pretty good return to zero.
  14. I'm really hoping I can make it next year. Missed the last 2 years and I'm suffering withdrawl!
  15. I just ordered one from Optics Planet for $630, free shipping. I like Weaver products generally and this seems to be a lot of scope for the money. We'll see!
  16. The extractor certainly is prone to breakage, or just wearing out. I don't know if the extractor in the JP bolt is made of the same super hard material, but I assume it is. Whatever. I like the enhanced bolt and think it's worth it, if for no other reason than it inspires confidence.
  17. I have the JP bolts in 3 guns. They are very well made. I've seen locking lugs break on cheaper bolts. When that happens it kinda ends your shooting day! The one that I put in my LR308 made it into a better, more reliable rifle. I think they are worth the $.
  18. I have several Bushies and all are great. Fine accuracy and excellent reliability.
  19. About 10 years ago I bought my first AR, a Bushmaster 20" V-Match. I've done a few things to it, like a JP handguard, Timney trigger, Miculek comp, replacement bcg (because the original was the old style with exposed firing pin, and because it was less than reliable with some loads). I've bought other ARs since, but every time I shoot that old V-Match I get more impressed with it. It seems to want to shoot everything I put through it close to 1" at 100 yds. I have more expensive ARs, but that old Bushy is becoming my go-to rifle. (Next life I'll probably get a JP, though!) I say this to illustrate that you don't need to spend $ for semi-custom rifles like JPs or Noveskes just to try 3-gun. It doesn't hurt, though, if you don't mind spending more for a top-drawer rifle. I'm just saying you don't need to do that to get started. A decent quality over the counter rifle should serve you well until you are good enough to compete at the top levels, but by then you will have sponsors who will insist that you shoot their rifle. Sponsors can be so narrow minded!
  20. Dang! I've got my entry here on my desk, but procrastinated too long!
  21. I'm with Benny on this. I bought a Burris 2-7 ballistic plex that was on sale through Optics Planet for $130 last year. It is a much better scope than the price tag would suggest. I liked it so much I bought another one in 3-9x for a different rifle. Both are on 3-gun rifles with offset irons for the close targets. I like the setup, but unfortunately, I haven't been able to shoot a match with either gun. Hopefully I'll get in a match or two this year and see how they work. My only concern with these scopes might be durability. I try not to bang my guns around anyway, but multigun matches can sometimes be a bit hard on equipment, especially the Ironman.
  22. No That happened to me too. Was weird. No doubt about it. I've signed up for a lot of matches. This was weird. Hmmm! I'm wondering if there was a glitch in the website then. Probably too late to do anything about it now, though!
  23. Might be a fun match, but I don't see any information about registration. Also, are retired LEOs eligible?
  24. I appreciate the drain it must be to put on a match like Ironman. I've shot 4 of them and Trav always looks like he's been rode hard and put away wet. Despite that, he, and everyone else, does a great job at putting on that match. My hat goes off to all of them, and especially Travis. I like to RO at least one match every year, but I gotta say that I don't think I'm enough of an Ironman to work the Ironman! It's hard enough just to shoot it! Last year I had ankle surgery which prevented me from shooting any 3-gun matches, so I missed out on Ironman, and others too. This year I was really looking forward to making at least a match or 2. I was too late to get registered for Ephrata or NW Challenge, but I was right here at the computer at 5:30 Pacific time to get into Ironman. I filled out the on-line registration form, hit the button at the bottom, and was sent back to the previous page. I didn't have a confirmation that I was registered, and it just didn't feel right, so I opened the registration form again, but by then it was only the waiting list. I e-mailed Trav and he says my name isn't showing on either the registrants or waiting list. So, I don't know what happened. Whatever it was, it makes me sick! I was REALLY looking forward to making it there this year. Oh well, such is life. I may have had a senior moment and hit the wrong button at the bottom of the form and cancelled my registration. Maybe I'll just use some of the money I had earmarked for the match and get one of those fancy resetting US poppers that MGM has on sale this month!
