...so... .........what is it?
2. OK Thanks George. I'm keeping your offer in mind. I gotta call the Cable Co now to see if they can provide a modem without a new hole in the wall.
3. OK. Sounds good. Are they fast enough for old mom (she likes to go fast), and trouble free? I'd hate to see old mom frustrated by complicated internet connection/reconfiguration problems. Sounds cheaper than the straight Apple options which I've just started reading about.
4. My brother just bought my dear old mom (77 yrs) a new IMac. I agreed to hook her up with high speed internet. She used to have dial-up. It appears that phone companys don't serve her area with DSL, but cable does. Mom doesn't want the cable Co to put holes through her walls/floors (like they seem to always do now)., so I'm thinking of a wireless internet connection for the modem. Does that sound OK? How does it work and what would I need. I belived this is a new IMac model.
5. How do you like the 30 lpi checkering on the front strap. If it's good, that would be a good (and normally expensive) feature.
6. I used (and liked) a pair of Bladetech dual kydex pouches with the Tek-lok quick belt connectors. Now that you mention it....I've since sold my XD-9s and don't need the pouches anymore. They're like new. I paid about $50 each for them. If you want them, I'll let you have them for $60 for the pair shipped. These are them: http://www.blade-tech.com/Double-Magazine-...Lok-pr-863.html
7. The TRUGRIPS cut to fit 1911 Alumagrip panels (so they can be removed), are working real well for me. I used a hole cutting punch to cut holes for the grip screws, although my alignment was a bit off (next time I'll make a template). Although I wouldn't call these a good "all around" grip because the TRUGRIP would be abrasive to the skin for IWB. They are great for competition. The TRUGRIPs are holding up much longer than I had even hoped. I've had 'em on and been using them for months and there's no sign of wear or of loosing their adhesion yet. To address the loosening of the Aluminum grip screws, I've developed a system that's not too bad. I got a whole bunch of used and "take off" grip screws (bought through gun forums like this). I put some purple Loctite on each screw and let them dry. This can be done quickly and easily "en masse". Whenever a screw becomes loose, I tighten it back up and this seems to hold fine for a while. If I have to remove the screw several times (I have been working on the guns a lot this summer) and I notice that there's not enough Loctite on it to create a firm hold, I replace it with a screw with fresh dried Loctite. One reason I went to this is because I have two SS 1911s I've been swapping in and out of competition or carry duty and I like the change the MSH and grips depending on the duty. Both have a permanent front strap treatment.
8. I've got VZ "Gator" grips and don't find them that grippy. The cocobolo double diamonds that I got from Yost-Bonitz are real good and grippy. I vote them best all around. For even grippier, I got some smooth Alumagrips and some TRUGRIPS. I cut the TRUGRIPS to fit the just the grip panel and stuck them on (I have 30 lpi checking on the front strap so didn't want the tape across the front strap). They work great (super grippy) but the grips screws come loose after ~100 rounds without Loktite or something (a problem with AL grips). I tried teflon tape. Didn't work. Tried rubber O-rings. Screws stick out. Tried blue Locktite. Ripped the bushing out. Tried purple Locktite. Works but grip screws still come loose after about 500 rounds. I'm currently using the purple Loctite since that works the best.
9. Shooh! You guys had me a little worried there! Now. Back to the sharing.
10. Darn! Cheap 1911s are soooo tempting! I'll likely end up with one.
11. Hmmm. I don't reload yet but I'm about to start. I find the responses interesting, e.g. that people here can't stand even one hour of reloading. Just as a gauge, do you guys hate cleaning guns as well?
12. I've got two like new Bladetech dual kydex mag pouches with Techloks for the XD-9 that I don't use anymore since I sold my XDs, that I'll let you have cheap if your interested. They worked well for me. I just got out of XDs once my 1911s got customized.
13. It is mostly the result of the lubricant used on lead bullets melting and burning. Ah, OK. Lube to seat the bullet in the cartridge case? Sorry for the side-track.
14. I'm just getting into re-loading. What is this "smoke" that's associated with lead bullets?
15. This helped me get over my fear of un-forged: http://www.pistolsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=7912 I don't own a Trojan but have been reading up on them over the last few months, and I'm impressed. I think I'll have to get one as my next new gun.
16. I had this problem too. I had a nice XD for Production but didn't like the low thumb grip required with the XDs (or Glocks, SIGs, ect.). This was a big factor in why I sold all my XDs and went with a CZ for Production and 1911s for L-10. I really like riding the thumb safety and I shoot better with that grip. The CZ-75/-85 has a thumsafety that allows the 1911 type grip. I still have a P228 for occasional carry. It's the only thing I still have to shoot with a low thumb.
17. This all sounds great. He says he wants the SS Trojan (he simply likes stainless) and is looking for who can get him one quickest. He's got a message into Brazos already. Anybody know anything about those adjustable sights the SS Trojan wears (the STI T.A.S Rear Sight)? http://www.brazoscustom.com/sti_guns/sti_trojan_ss.htm
18. A freind of mine is considering a Trojan or a Springer. For that matter, I really like the Trojans too, and they've now risen to the top of my wish list. The Springfields I know have a pretty heavy trigger out of the box. On the other hand I haven't yet heard anyone say that they sent their new Trojan in for a trigger job. A 4lb trigger is what we both want. Can anybody comment on what an unmodified Trojan trigger is like?
19. Let me be the first to say.... I like it.
20. To answer a few questions: We don't do the provisional single stack thing here and I can't see it happening either. We're too small. There isn't even that many that do L-10. In Production there are usually only three or two including me. My initial suggestion was a 9mm 1911 like the STI Trojan or the SA, but he says he wants .45 (1911 single stack). He understands the ammo price difference but still seems to want .45. He enjoys solo target shooting and I believe he wants a gun that can be used for defense. He won't be reloading soon so that isn't an option now. Has anyone sent an SA GI to Benny Hill or other smith for a single stack make-over? The STI Trojan (he wants 45) also is of interest as an alternative to the stock Trophy Match. What are the odds of it working out of the box. I'd like to see him avoid having to ship/return guns siince he's new and will only have one.
21. I saw I former office mate and great/real smart guy in my local range shooting a nice Ruger .22 target pistol. I was suprised to see him shooting. He was heavy into rock and mountain climbing when I worked with him. He asked me what I shot, and said he just started shooting about a year ago and would like to get into it more. Next week I took him shooting. I said I had shot USPSA for a year mostly with a CZ-85 Combat in Production and I just started with a 1911 in L-10. I let him shoot my CZ and 1911s (.45). He said he has been considering a Springfield Trophy Match, which go for about $1,300. He said he would be comfortable spending $1,500, but I think he be open to other options as well. He shot very well from standing (had better accuracy than me), so I invited him to compete in the local USPSA match with my CZ-85 Combat and gear. He consented to go in the July Match, that way he'll be able to get some practice with me. He would like to buy a 1911 in .45 and I think it would be a good idea to get him started. He liked my Yost-Bonittz customized Colt that is set up for L10 and my Yost-Bonittz customized SA GI (1* enhanced with some extras). I've had several 1911 and really see the wisdom of going custom, so I've recommended the Yo-Bo 1* Enhanced on their SA GI but with Bomars, because he wants adjustables. This would come in at about $1,800 with a wait of maybe 9-months based on my own experience. Based on what I've seen on these forums, I also suggested he look into an SA GI sent to Benny Hill to have something similar to the Trophy Match made but with better parts and custom fitted. Looks like the wait would be about 4-months? The stock Trophy Match seems an OK option too, and I told him so. He says his wife is only comfortable with one gun right now, so with these options he could use it for competition (L-10) and also for home defense and carry if desired. Based on this background what suggestions do you have for a pistol for him. P.S. He's tried Glocks and 1911s and wants a 1911.
22. Based on what I've read regarding the lead/indoor range issue, I suspect that a significant source of high lead levels is due to ingestion or from wiping the nose. I always wipe and wash my hands and shoes after shooting or handling spent cartidges now. I use D-Lead wipes and the soap. They seem to know what they are talking about and put forth a convincing case for their product. http://www.uniquetek.com/site/696296/product/T1232 http://www.glassmart.com/d-lead.asp
23. Sorry, I voted to loose it. I was about ready to buy one to keep up with the technology race, then I thought of what I perceive as the intent of Production (and my intent of training for real carry situations), about how much time differeence it wouldn't make anyway, and how good it would be to avoid the whole issue especially if a ruling were made against it after I bought one, and I decided to go with a belt holster. I'm happy with my regular belt holster. Sorry. We don't have IDPA around here so I try to tailor my training/competition to real life defense encounters as much as possible. I could see women wanting it if they thought it was a viable carry holster.
