  1. Looks like it might be wet for the Steel match this coming Sunday. How is my CMore going to hold up to getting wet? Any trouble? Thanks.
  2. Shooting cadence does suck! It encourages you to pull the trigger when you think you ought to and not when your sights are lined up. Just count the shots.
  3. I shoot it quite a bit (2003 MD State Champion, and I also generally place near the top at other events). And also shoot Steel Challenge with my Cowboy guns. And I also once in a while shoot a USPSA match with a 1911 (L10). At the top level in Cowboy, the shooters are very talented. Yup, scoring is screwy, though there is a quiet grass-roots movement to a total time scoring basis. That makes a LOT more sense. Also, there is another Cowboy game on the rise called Western 3 Gun. It's much closer to IPSC style. Shooting on the move, painting/pasting between shooters, a better scoring system, accuracy counts, stages presented as a shooting puzzle to work out, etc. If you're in the Sacramento area on the 4th Saturday of the month (not May, we have a match conflict), come on out and see. I'm the MD there and thinking of adding a category for 1911's. That'll make it easier for IPSC/IDPA shooters to gear up. E-mail me if you'd like more info. Oh, clothes are easy. Jeans, boots, long sleeve shirt (rolled up of course), and a cowboy type hat are all you need. It's not as hot as you'd think as the clothes keep the sun off you and the hat provides a lot of shade. 4. I was playin with the kids when the phone rang. Clark Custom called to tell me that my .22 is ready! 2 weeks early too . They're gonna ship it tomorrow. I'll post a pic in the gallery after I get the CMore installed. I love it when the smith calls that the gun is done and not cause there's a problem! Joel
  5. Western 3 Gun Cowboy Steel Challenge Haven't shot an IPSC match in quite some time, hope to get back to it. Joel
  6. Might be as simple as the flat one fits your hand better. Joel
  7. Flex, I think you're right! Samples! Joel
  8. I think 1 head of garlic would be more accurate? I clove won't go anywhere with that much meat.
  9. First off, I hope this is in the right forum! I was flipping through the sports section today reading about the Red Sox, and ran across a short little 3 inch that came from the Chicago Tribune. There was no by-line, so I can't give the author credit. Johnny Damon has called his team a bunch of "idiots." He says that the key to their success has been eliminating thinking. The salient point is in the last paragraph which I'm going to quote here: Now that is really a brilliant statement and the key to high levels of performance in sports. Don't think. Just do what you've taught your body to do. I thought this interesting enough to post. Joel
  10. Yup. Couldn't agree more. I find that my shots go exactly where I'm looking. However, I'm not always looking at the spot on the target I want to hit I overshot a target a match recently with my eyes on a transition. The bullet hit the dirt exactly where I was looking. I gotta work on it too. Joel

If I shot my very best at a match and came in 2nd, then I got more work to do! I'll still be very pleased with my performance and there is a lot to learn, even when you are shooting well. It just means that the person that beat me is better than me. Motivation! Sometimes it's hard to come by, sometimes it isn't. Take the good out of the experience, learn from the bad, and get back to work so that you can beat that kid! There's a 15yo kid here that I shoot Cowboy with. He beats me all the time. Everytime I close the gap, he finds a new gear. It's making us both work harder. As a result, he placed 8th at the World's this past year. I hope to see him win it in the next few. Now I got him out shooting Steel Challenge. It's making us both better. Joel
  13. Duane, that's just impossible! I just read through the whole thread. I don't think I could pick a favorite. For my son (he's 3) it changes every time I put in a new DVD. For me there are 3 that I watch a lot. These are listed in no particular order. Hudson Hawk Princess Bride Tombstone Joel
  14. I just finished reading it. Wow! Excellent book and a great look at modern warfare. And very interesting background and information on the man that developed the plans for Afganistan and Iraq. I heartily recommend it. Joel
  15. Great attitude and example of making a weakness into a strength! Well done. Joel
  16. First question, are you sure it isn't you? Have someone else that you know is an accurate shooter try it out and see what happens. Best to isolate it to the gun first. Joel
  17. Howdy MB! It was great meeting you at W3G and I'm looking forward to seeing you again at WR. My son's leg has healed up and his cast came off a week ago. I voted for ya Doc...er....Joel
  18. Thread drift.... Eric, I'll live! At least I shoot some other games beside Cowboy . Now back to your regularly scheduled program. Joel
  19. I'm a Cowboy shooter and I don't like SASS TV or the attitudes of a lot of the SASS shooters out there. A good majority of them have a superior attitude that I think is derived from a derision of competition. Whether it's because the aren't good enough to compete due to an unwillingness to practice, or because they think that organized (and glorified) plinking is better is beyond me. Look for the show that Michael Bane is doing on Western 3 Gun. That game is run by competitive shooters for competitive shooters. Complete with a prize table and possibly cash to give away in the future. That will be the future of competitive cowboy shooting. It won't be SASS. So yeah, I agree with your rant! But don't paint all of us with that broad brush. Joel "Doc" Shapiro http://www.jspublications.net
  20. Safety has to be on. Alter your grip so that your strong hand thumb rides on the safety. Then it will be simple to turn off after you draw and during presentation to the target. Joel
  21. After shooting a steel match a week ago I decided to get rid of the FO front sight I had on my 1911. I found it to be very distracting having the dot up there while I was lining up the sights. I dug my post back out, milled it down a bunch (it was real wide) and put it back on. MUCH better! Anyone else get rid of their FO sight? Now I have a bunch of FO rods that I won't need. Anyone want 'em? Send me an e-mail Joel
  22. This thread sure took off! I found another Black Widow (sorry, no pics). It was in the trash can guarding an egg sac. My wife had never seen one, so I "coaxed" it out onto a piece of cardboard. She got a good look and the creeps too. Dropped it to the ground and squashed it (good thing I had shoes on!). Then I hosed down the egg sac with bug spray, seven powder, and broke it up with a stick (it was in a real hard to reach spot behind the hinge). I'm sure there will be more of the little buggers Joel
  23. Hey, that's my neck of the woods! 4th Sunday there is an IPSC match at the range on Ione Rd. If he shoots Cowboy, we have one at the same range this coming Sunday. Joel
  24. This is one of the problems moving here to CA. Apparently my outside trash can is a haven for Black Widow's. I've had several of them take up residence only to meet their end with a piece of cardboard or my shoe. Of course, getting bit by one near the pool earlier this week didn't help my mood any. I hate the dang things! I know they eat bugs that I don't want around, but still. I've got a couple little kids and a pup that run (or crawl) around. Can't run the risk. I hate spiders. Joel
