Thanks for the updates/explanations...  Very helpful...  I've been running these magazines for almost a year...  Not sure if the springs could be starting to lose their tension already...  I'll bump them up to at least nine notches when I clean them this week...  I bumped one magazine up to nine notches and could feel the difference between it and one set to eight notches...  Makes more of a difference than I expected.

How long does a set of springs usually last?  Assume you replace worn out springs with the Tandemkross green springs as Ruger doesn't seem to sell any separate parts?

I use the TK Doublekross mags.  Originally they had Ruger guts.  I now use TK guts in all.  I will note that you have to be careful when tensioning the rotor.  It is easy to make a mistake and turn it one position to little.  You WILL have a feed problem with that mag.  If you are following the old directions, you will be one turn too little.

I've been turning the hex bolt eight positions when rebuilding my magazines...  Eight has worked fine until a match yesterday when one magazine failed to push the bullet up so it could be pushed into the chamber...  I attributed the problem as the magazines being too dirty, but now I'm wondering if the bolt needs to be wound a notch tighter.

I'm using Ruger clear magazines with all Ruger internals...  Each magazine probably has close to 800 rounds since the last cleaning.

What are the new directions for tightening the bolt?

Oh yes! You can set your phone on a tripod (I usually using front camera facing the shooter to get some visual feedback in addition to the voice). Then open the video recording screen (from the main app menu).

With a Bluetooth timer connected with the app you can run entire practice from the timer (start/stop individual strings/runs) and the app will automatically attach videos to each run. If you not editing tags or adding scores, you don't need to touch your phone.

You can even start/stop video recording remotely from the timer too. See more details in the user guide available in the app.

I'm also experimenting with blending multiple videos recorded in the app. This be in the next app release.
    E.g. see https://www.facebook.com/eugene.practiscore/posts/1057987515047500

Wow, Thanks!  That's pretty cool...  I completely missed it...  I do use/like the tags though...

You know, the OP was asking about the PractiScore Log app... The PractiScore Log does work okay on Fire 7 but the app is not available from the Amazon App store, i.e. you would need to install Google Play on the tablet. All in all I won't recommend that tablet for using with the PractiScore Log app.

Generally, to get all the benefits of the PractiScore log app you need a device with a good screen, a good camera, and one that you could easily mount on a tripod at the range. The good news is that you likely already have that device - it is your phone. :D

The PractiScore Log app is great for tracking stages while practicing...  I use it for Steel Challenge practice...  Helps me see where I improved or slowed down...  I just use my phone...  It's a couple year old One+ 7 Pro...  It works great...

What do the camera and  tripod have to do with running the PractiScore Log app?  Am I missing something?

  5. I have noticed that my two 510c dots occasionally have the star burst look...  I have tried to figure out what was wrong and this thread finally cleared it up for me...  It never occurred to me that it might be my eyes...  Taking a picture of my dot showed a perfectly round dot...  It seems to get worse if I enlarge the dot.

I have never heard my eye doctor mention that I have astigmatism...  Is this something that could be corrected with glasses?  I wonder if it's something Brian could correct with Hunter HD Gold lenses?

I use peel washers with my Carolina Crusher to keep it timed properly on my Black Mamba.  I use the tab end of a Tipton Action/Chamber cleaning tool, inserted in the top slot, to torque it down.  Shim until it's finger tight at the 10 o'clock position, then torque with the tool to 12 o'clock.  It won't move until you want it to move.

What a great tip...  Thank you!

I Googled 'Tipton Action/Chamber cleaning tool' and found that Amazon sells a set for $11 with next day free shipping...  Bought a set and they do indeed fit into the slot and provide great leverage for tightening the compensator...  Works great...  I would have never thought of that.

The threads on my Striplin comp have slowly been disappearing for the past couple years, and due to operator error, I finally stripped them out.

I'll be doing a little experimenting with Steve Foster's Falcon and Todd Syssa's Wiland Crusher compensator's over the coming weeks.

The Crusher's OD was a bit large for my barrel, so I whacked it down to to the same size.

    First real test is tomorrow.

Nice job turning down the OD of your Carolina Crusher compensator...  Looks a whole lot better!  Did you ever consider cutting some side slots on it so you could use a wrench to tighten it on the barrel?

I'm currently using a Carolina Crusher comp on my RFRO and have trouble keeping it tight on the barrel...  I tightened it as tight as I could by hand and used two drops of Loctite 243 (Blue)...  It spun during my second match using it.

Thinking about using more Loctite 243 when I put it back on...  or maybe switching to Loctite 263 (Red).

  8. @bgary...  Nice to see you posting here again!

I'm curious whether AD's bring up Steel Challenge issues in the BOD meetings?  I don't normally read the BOD minutes...  I'm a USPSA CRO with the Steel Challenge Endorsement.

Would you be willing to bring up @Hoops suggestion for smaller versions of Outer Limits and Speed Option?  There are lots of clubs that can't fit OL or SO in their current bays...  It would give them an option to run eight stage Steel Challenge matches...  or at least cycle through eight different stages.

Zack was at the last two world shoots and heavily involved, in april 2021 and october-ish 2020

Glad to hear that...  Zack usually comes to our yearly level II SC match, but couldn't make it this year...  Glad he is still involved...  He does a lot of good for SC.

  10. At one time Zack Jones was the 'Ambassador' for Steel Challenge...  He worked with the rules...  peak score adjustments...  and had the President's ear for Steel Challenge.

I've always considered him a sort of floating Area Director for Steel Challenge...  He used to post here quite often...  Haven't seen him recently...  Don't know if he is still involved.

I've only ever used the welding spray, so I cannot speak to the cooking spray.  Presumably, it is manufactured to withstand a decent amount of heat, but I don't think you are going to save any money by using it instead.  For the record, this is the stuff I use.  It is $9 a can and I am not even close to it being empty.  A little bit goes a long way.

Searched for welding anti splatter spray and found this at Amazon:

    https://www.amazon.com/Forney-37030-Welders-Spatter-16-Ounce/dp/B000TG60BI/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=anti+spatter&qid=1630439704&sr=8-4

    Is this what you're using?

  12. I voted 'Yes' but agree with everything posted above...  SCSA should have their own BOD, but I don't think it will happen...  We run one Level II match a year and always have trouble getting NROI certified Range Officers to help run the match...  Not many SCSA shooters will bother getting NROI certified and not many USPSA RO's and CRO's care about Steel Challenge...  There are a few of us that shoot both, but not many.

Wiland Carolina Crusher Gen2 comp is what I have been using on both my RFPO and RFRO.  I tried a number of different comps and wound up liking this one.

Thanks, Peter...  Wiland's still out of stock, but I plan to try one once they are back in stock.

I watched a video comparing a bunch of different comps.  Sorry, I don't have the link.  It showed there were no differences between the comps in reducing muzzle rise.  I think the best you can do is a three up-port comp that is short and light.

I recently experimented with adding a Maddmacs comp to my raptor barrel.  It completely eliminated muzzle rise when using Mini-Mags.  I'm certain my other comps would do the same if I could clock them.  If I were buying a new comp I'd buy the Maddmacs steel challenge comp.

I have a Briley Raptor barrel on order...  Not sure when it will get here...

I planned to get one of the Wiland Carolina Crusher Gen2 comps, but they seem to be out of stock...  Checked out the MaddMacs Steel Challenge comp...  Looks good...  is light and not too expensive...  only downside looks like it might be a pain to clean...  Will try one out... Have one on order...  Thanks for the tip!

I think they are.  First I do a slo-mo video with and without the comp against a background that I can see what is actually happening with the gun.  In my experience I usually see a very minuscule positive affect dampening muzzle rise.  With the little affect the comps have on actual muzzle rise,  for me it comes down to perceived recoil.  When using a comp I feel that the dot is more stable and easier for me to track.

Do you also use a comp on your RFRO rifle?

Curious which comp you decided on if you do use one...  Thanks!

  16. You can't really compare USPSA matches with SCSA matches...  or USPSA shooters with SCSA shooters...  At least not at the ranges I shoot at in central Florida.

We shoot a lot of USPSA matches at our range...  Weekly, monthly and some level 2 matches throughout the year...  We run one classifier in one of our monthly USPSA matches...  Occasionally we run a full (5 or 6 stage) classifier match to help people not classified become classified...  We usually get a low turnout for these matches because most of our USPSA shooters don't want to waste a day shooting them...  It helps new shooters, so we run them.

We have small bays and can only run the standard 6 stages...  We run one Steel Challenge match a month...  and one Level 2 match a year...  Our Steel Challenge Match Director loves outlaw stages...  things like 'Inner Limits' and other old and different stages...  Most of the Steel Challenge shooters complain when he runs outlaw stages...  They want to run the same six stages every month...  Classification seems to be more important to Steel Challenge shooters...  especially newer SC shooters.

  17. I voted 'No" to the poll even though our range and the next closest range to me can not run OL or SO...  A range over 100 miles south of me runs all eight stages...  I drive down to shoot their monthly matches.

My thoughts are that providing smaller/different options to OL and SO would effectively eliminate them over time...  Most people would gravitate to shooting the smaller versions because they would probably be easier and faster to shoot.

Another reason is because I think it's important to keep the two long distance stages as part of SCSA Steel Challenge...  They are challenging stages.

Adding stages to SCSA was brought up several years ago and the long time SC shooters were mostly against it...  I can't remember exactly when it was, but @Zack Jones might remember.

  18. I like the Shockbottle hundo gauges...  The original...  I've used mine for many years and it works perfectly with the MTM boxes...  I load the hundo gause...  Lift it up to make sure all the cartridges lay flat...  Then sight down the top of th gauge to make sure all the primers are flat...  Works great!

I also have an intermediate flip tray (that I think the Shockbottle guys make) that makes it easy to move the bullets from the hundo to a box...  Load hundo...  flip to intermediate tray...  flip to MTM box...

Anyone actually get an AMG Commander this year?

I gave them money 4 months ago and haven't heard a peep.

Yes, I bought some for our range.

Look under the Contact Us section at the bottom of his web site and send him an email...

That is possible, but there was a lot of crud in the firing pin channel in the cavity behind the small hole in the breech face. I had cleaned the hole in the breech face with the correct size drill, but the firing pin would not drop through.  As I wrote in the first post, I had to crush the crud with the firing pin, then blow it out, then shoot it with solvent.

My BCG does have a 223 style extractor, so I'll take your advice on that.  Thanks.  That could have been a contributing factor.  I still think most of the gunk was cased by pierced Federal SPPs.  Thousands of rounds with CCI 500 caused no problems.  Less than 150 of the Federal did.

I've had trouble with the firing pin channel filling up with carbon in the past...  Sometimes you can see the extractor spaced away from the flat spot on the bolt where it is supposed to rest...  I clean my bolt before every match...  I remove the firing pin and squirt some Hoppe's 9 in the channel...  Clean the rest of the bolt, then squirt a bit more down the channel...  and blow it out with compressed air...  I cover the two holes in the bolt with my fingers so most of the air comes out of the firing pin area.

I also run a 1/16" drill bit through the firing pin hole in the bolt every time I clean it...  Seems to help.  I know 1/16" isn't the correct size...  It's a little bit smaller...  Not sure what the correct size actually is.

I'm a convert to the AMG. I used it this weekend at a major and it is absolutely the wave of the future. I need large numbers and a loud beep and it delivers for both. The only "fault" I found was in the sensitivity settings. I set it on 8 out of 10 to see how it did with quiet PCC's and I still had to get pretty close. When I set it to 10 I had to be very careful to visibly capture the time after last shot fired because it would seemingly pick up wind, clearing the gun etc. It would change several times before range was clear. It even changed from sliding it into my pocket. But that is not a problem if you are doing things right. Excellent timer

If you press any of the front buttons on an AMG timer it will stop picking up additional shots...  It helps eliminating any future shots from registering...  It's useful when you are runnibg a 22 or PCC in one bay and the shooter in the next bay is shooting an Open gun...  The only possible downside would be if the shooter decided to take another shot after you have pressed one of the buttons to stop picking up any shots.

If you look at the front of an AMG timer, you can see the horizontal bar moving up and down when the timer is actively listening for shots...  Press one of the front buttons and the timer stops scanning for shots...  The bar stops moving...  Kind of like the Cylons in  Battlestar Gallacta...  🙂
