  1. Peltor 9volt (that amplify sound too) & disposable foam earplugs
  2. I own some terribly smelly, thick wonder grease called "Tetra Lube" that I do not recomend for 1911 rails but I do use to lube the mainshaft of the 650. Though it would be smart to take off the old blackened grease 1st, I just keep adding a little Tetra every 5K to 10K rounds; I also add a little to the polymer ramp/cam that advances the shelplate. Underside of the shellplate gets a drylube like Birchwoodcasey moly or Remington drylube. D.C. Johnson
  3. THAT load will liekly BLOW UP YOUR GUN. The OAL that you listed above is WAY, WAY TOO SHORT. THe correct OAL is for this load is between 1.155" and 1.160" (I think you had a mis-print in your post but its very important with load data to correct that error before anyone uses the data & harms themselves, others, or their gun). Also, you only need 3.2 grns of N310 & a Jacketed 147 in a CZ 75B or 85B/Combat. You are right on the edge with 3.2 so please do not attempt 3.3 grns. Even at 1.160", th load listed has been predicted to generate around 42,000 PSI. That pressure is in the realm of +P+ (or in other words, it is BEYOND all approved SAAMI specifications as to what they consider safe for 9mm). Use with extreme caution & at your own risk. It sounds to me like you would be better off sticking with a book load like 3.3 grns of Titegroup and a 147 jacketed bullet. Cheaper too. Regards, D.C. Johnson
  4. I shoot an Open glock built by John Nagel with a KKM barrel & Ti comp by Brian Hawley of Expiramental Machining. I use 3N38 in 9 Major. Before I go ANY further, you need to understand: 1) My barrel has 4 VERY LARGE hybrid holes - nearly fulll diameter. Thus, my gun begins to dump pressure after only about 2" of barrel. 2) You have a 6" barrel. Use a LOT LESS powder in your 3N38 Loads to start. Work up slowly. That being said, I load a 124 grain Montana Gold CMJ or FMJ to a length of 1.160" & it severely compresses a major charge of 3N38. In my gun, it takes 8.8 grains of 3N38 to reach major with the Montana 124. This is about 166 to 167 PF OUT OF MY GUN. WIth a 6" barrel, I would start around 7.2 grains and only use 124s; you should load out to 1.155 or 1.160" and make sure to use ONLY once fired cases (then discard them or load to Minor). Regards, D.
  5. The debate on the CZ SP-01 & Tanfoglio Stock Custom is heating up again over on the IPSC Global Village site The link is HERE Take a look at pages 2 & 3. BTW, the 1st page is now WRONG; the SP-01 & Tanfoglio Stock Custom are allowed back into Production pending a vote later this summer (to take effect Jan 1 2006). My posts over there (while being pro-CZ SP-01) are also intended to develope the debate about Production division which will be held at the World Shoot later this summer. That debate will be followed by a General Assembly vote on whether the SP-01 & Tanfoglio Stock Custom will be allowed in IPSC Production after Jan. 1, 2006. This vote may, or may not affect USPSA's Production Division. Please take a look & feel free to add your comments. I am "Douglas Johnson" on that site. The stakes for IPSC are very high over this one; the above mentioned guns were JUST let back onto the approved list after a 3 week ban last month. That ban caused CZ & Tanfoglio (major World Shoot sponsors) to reportedly threaten to pull their financial support for the World Shoot (which could have torpedoed the whole match) and there were understandable concerns that Eric Graufel's sponsor (Tanfoglio) might have sought legal action against IPSC over the ban of their new gun. BTW, on another section of that forum, there was a poll running 80% in favor of letting various new 9mm guns into Production & allowing the shooters to decide who wins. Even with the CZ & Tanfoglio back in for THIS world shoot, I would not bet against another Sevigny/Glock win. Regards, D.C. Johnson www.shootersparadise.com
  6. I have not read the specific rules & frankly, I don't need to read them all to know I REALLY LIKE THIS NEW DIVISION! Good work Gary. I will try to make this happen at the local match I run (www.shootersparadise.com). Can you PM any info on this division & EZWinScore? Now that I have publicly voiced support for the division, will have to go back & read those rules in detail. Regards, D.
  7. Kevin wrote: "I also know what our USPSA rules are. I've seen every top GM shooter do dry mag changes all the time. " Amen. I have practiced mag changes in the safe area & will continue to do so at all sanctioned USPSA events. Kevin also wrote: "After he said that, several people, including a few other RO's, got his attention and went over to talk with him. . . I think it was something to the effect of, "Hey knock it off, you're in the wrong, he's allowed to do that." Again, many of us are happy to help out in teaching our fellow ROs who may not be aware of this nuance of the USPSA & IPSC rules, with the appropriate degree of respect of course. Respectful sportsmanship is an important aspect of every USPSA event. Regards, D.C. Johnson www.shootersparadise.com
  8. Not sure about accuracy (both seemed fine to me; old .45 ACP STI Edge) but straight Clays ran MUCH cleaner at the shotgun-like low pressure generated by the .45. Indoors, Clays sounds much softer than TG though in reality, recoil seemed the same if the velocity & bullet weight were the same (same split times). Titegroup works fine as to consistency as measured on the crono, but it leaves black soot in the gun & down one side of every fired case. TG also seems to burn hotter than clays - makes sence considering the nitro content. D.C. Johnson
  9. I shot this in April at the SHooters Paradise indoor monthly (www.shootersparadise.com) Johnson, Douglas "Carlos," B Limited 110, 0, 21.63 seconds, HF 5.0855, 120.0000 match points, 100.00% According to the Ohio HF predictor, looks to be about a 63% Nation wide (so much for A class in May). I think this is one of the harder classifiers to shoot well. If you are trying to move up, might want to avoind this one (or shoot it really well). C.
  10. Angus' price on the 1st couple of guns in the US was $495. While not set in stone, the final retail price is looking like $550 to $575 for the box stock gun. There are factory options & Production-legal add-ons like a fiber optic front sight that will cost more if you order the gun that way through Angus. Apparently there is also a Factory option hammer that offers a better trigger pull like the special trigger pull offered on the Production approved special edition Walther 9mm or the better than average trigger that comes standard on the more expensive Beretta Elite II (compared to the 92). The $550 SP-01 really does come as a standard gun with parts very similar (or possibly interchangeable) with the police issue P-01 compact alloy frame 9mm. Since its looking like it will be in general production as a regular CZ product, there is nothing special or custom about the stock parts or stock guns, hence the low asking price. CZ's offering of an optional factory competition hammer or factory fiber optic sights is no different than Beretta offering a race version of their 92 (the Elite II) or installing a 3.5 Glock connector in a USPSA Glock 17. The factory optional parts for the SP-01 are not needed for USPSA or IPSC & I choose not to use fiber optics on any of my guns. Let all of the above-mentioned the guns into the Division & the shooter's talent will decide who wins. Regards, D.C. Johnson
  11. 2Cats: I have completed extensive work with N-310 & 147 grain jacketed & TMJ/plated bullets. As Steven Anderson suggests, this is an outstanding load which obviously works well for Mr. Burkett. How good is this load? -At the 2004 S&W Winter Nationals (IDPA), second place in SSP was Phil Strader shooting a box stock Glock 17. He used the N-310 load with a Zero 147 over 3.2 grns of N-310 @ 1.150" OAL & once fired Hirtenberger L7A1 cases. I know this because I loaded that ammo personally. -Both of the New York rounds of GSSF in 2004 (Am. Civ. and (1) Competition Division) were won by my team mate on Team Shooters Paradise GSSF. He used the same load as above though with mixed cases. THe bullets used were also Zero JHPs which yield supperior accuracy. HOWEVER, this load WILL generate +p+ pressures. If you run this on the internal ballistics calculator "Quickload", it is predicted to be over 42,000 PSI - which is generally acknowledged to be more than 5% above actual pressures. However, the pressures generated are still considerable. You should employ the safety precautions of using a Lee brand "U" or undersize die to prevent the possibility of setback. At a minimum, used the Lee brand Factory Crimp die for the same reason. If you are shooting a G34, you can back down to 3.0 or 3.1 grns. You can obtain further extensive information on this load by doing a search on my username on GlockTalk.com; "Carlitos" or by searching my posts here on be.com. Good luck 2cats. Regards, D.C. Johnson www.shootersparadise.com USPSA/NROI GSSF
  12. This is GREAT news! Now, we just need to get the general assembly to vote the right way on this issue. My thoughts are: 1) Other approved guns cost the same or more (eg Beretta Steel I: $1600 vs. SP-01: $495 to $575). 2) Other approved guns have the same mag capacity (eg ParaOrd LDA P18; over $1000) 3) Other approved guns weigh as much or more ( eg Beretta Steel I and Sig Steel 226) 4) Other approved guns use a heavy/long dust cover of steel (Jericho 941, IMI Baby Desert Eagle, several other Tanfoglios, CZ 97B). So I see no logical reason to vote out these guns (particularly the SP-01). Sure, there might have been some hurt feelings after the companies were sent warning letters & built the guns anyway, but the guns meet the same rules as the rest of the approved-list guns. Lets hope that IPSC does the right thing. Regards, D.C. Johnson
  13. Well, I meant it when I used the word "controversial". BTW, the start in question was NOT at a Level III match. In fact, it was simply a local club match. THere were of course no arbitrations filed & it was only 1 of 4 stages that day (& it let the wheelgunners win one for once). Due to the controversy (then & now) I am not planning on using it at our match. However, I often use regular unloaded starts (the specific instructions) at our indoor match - particularly where a shooter has to do something with his/her hands 1st, like turn over a card, or pick up an object. For our newer shooters, this tends to cut down on sweeping problems or problems associated with focusing on something other than the muzzle direction. The first action is completed, THEN they go for the gun & load from the belt or table. Regards, C.
  14. The show has some good & some bad gun handling: The good: Jack once shot a female terrorist right through an interior wall made of dry-wall. Dry wall is certainly not impervious to .40, 9 or .357 Sig (anyone know which one Jack uses?) The not-so-good: Jack once handed a Glock to his temporary non-agent partner & said something to the effect of "the safety is off & its ready to shoot!" I think Jack's grip needs some serious work, particularly since he shoots an average of 2.3 bad-guys per episode. D.
  15. I read the post by Vince Pinto (linked above) & I realize I stand corrected as to: thumb shields (not thumb rests). A thumb shield goes between the strong hand thumb and the slide to prevent contact with the slide. It has no effect on recoil management, but it might enhance reliability for poeple who have trouble riding the slide. If you follow the link to Vince's post, you will read that the "external modification" language has been dropped. So both thumb shields AND the Swenson "really hard to fit" shield safeties are both OK in Limited. Regards, D.C. Johnson
  16. Have seen most variations. As a shooter, I will take advantage of a poorly-worded description by locking the slide to the rear, propping the gun on one mag and placing the one I plan to load with on the table aimed right at the magwell & maybe 1/2" from the gun or else balanced on one end. For this reason, I design stages with language "gun must start slide forward, hammer down, no proping up the gun with the magazine or balacing gun to stand upright, . . etc. Some open guns have been modified so that they no longer have a provision for locking open. We have had 1 or 2 stages here in Area 8 where mags had to be unloaded. This is controversial for 2 reasons: 1) Its a test of mag loading speed & not shooting skill and 2) Revolvers were allowed to use loaded moon clips (and the revolvers beat every other gun). Its true that a 625 will usually fire without the moonclip, but a 610 using .40 may not work; hence the allowance of loaded moonclips. Regards, D.C. Johnson
  17. Hurray! No Brown Recluse here in VA! We just the black widows & I have only seen those at Quantico range where we are not currently shooting. Heard they are at Fredericksburg though. "By the way, there is a large (1.5-2") dark brown almost black spider which you see in houses, which will scare the &*^^% out of you but which hunts and kills brown house spiders (and other spiders). Maybe you should leave those alone. " Like I said, spiders in general are OK by me generally & I would not mind distributing a few of these large hunter/killer spiders around the house if it meant never getting a bite from a brown recluse like the one pictured above; yuck! (willies).
  18. Absolutely ride the safety. You will never have a decent 1911 draw time without it. I shoot a 1911, CZs and Glocks; my grip does not change much for any of them even though there is not safety to ride on the glock. Regards, C.
  19. Thumb rests are not allowed which is why there is the difficult-to-fit Swenson thumb safety with integral thumb shield.
  20. In a .45 Edge, I once put a healthy dent in a CCI primer trying to get it out at the unload&show clear. The nose of a 200 grn SWC seemed to jam against the edge of the port & I yanked on it a couple of times; not fast but I pulled it pretty hard. GM Phil Strader was my RO; he stopped me & we got the round out; it had an oblong indentation from the ejector right across the primer. Its surprising that it did not ignite.
  21. Yo Rik! Nice set up. I grew up in Tiburon (where land is expensive) but now I live just outside of Georgetown inside the D.C. beltway (where land is just as expensive); 1/4 million once bought 875 sq. feet of condo though the price is now 75% higher for the same space. My concessions to condo living are: -tubler MUST have a solid lid or tape it over with duct tape to cover the holes -must add a damp dryer sheet to walnut media to trap dust. -before adding brass, add the media and 2 cap fulls of liquid car polish like NuFinish plus about 1 or 2 Oz. of Water to keep dust down & shorten tumbling to 1 hr. -use an electric holiday timer so you can leave while its on & you don't have to listen to the tumbler. "Moving to another part of the house" ain't an option when you live in 875 sq feet. -get the RCBS brand media seperator with its integral cover. I put it in the bathtub, hold my breath, dump in the contents of the tumbler, & walk away. Wait 1/2 hr. Then, seperate & leave for another 1/2 hr. Then I rinse down the tub & shower. When you reload in a condo, tumbling outside is NOT an option or your neighbors will think you are a nut (or at least think you are enviro-unfriendly) & DHS might want to ask you some questions. At least you do not have to endure as many "in the closet/out of the closet" jokes as your male counter parts who have no place else to set up a reloader. Regards, C BTW - my closet reloading setup looks a bit like yours - just not as well organized (I am a single guy after all) & not helped at all by recently spilling 1/2 lb of 320 all over the place (expensive woops!). The spilled powder I can live with; its the lead I am afraind of & very careful with.
  22. Owned that EXACT trailer from Harbor Freight and it is a GREAT product that served me well for 2 years before I sold it. Arrives on a truck. Made in China. The directions were a laugh; translated from Chinese, they state "sew middle rail A to side rail C & D" instead of "bolt together". Funniest part was: "Assembly time: 2 hrs" Well, it may take a whole crew of Chinese prison laborers 2 hours but it took me most of a weekend with hand tools. If you can borrow an electric impact gun, it will go together a lot quicker. Suggestions: 1)the little sheet metal clips to hold the wires in place for the lights have sharp edges & can eventually short out the lights; use zip ties instead. 2) get a spare 12" wheel 3) Use a 1/2" piece of pressure treated ply wood for the deck. And grip tape in case it rains. 4)Likely overkill, but I put "Bearing Buddies" & high quality US wheel grease on my wheel bearings. I put a LOT of miles on mine carring my 500 lbs of race bike & spares box to places like Summit Point, Nelson Ledges, Road Atlanta, Gingerman, etc. -all from then home base of Buffalo, NY. It will easily carry 2 bikes (about 1000 lbs). Regards, D.
  23. I like spikers OK (especially wolf spiders) but that picture of the bite gave me the willies; I would like to avoid these Brown Recluse spiders. Where are they commonly found other than ceder trees? Commonly found at our outdoor competitions? I hope not.
  24. Thanks for the pic - very cool gun. At $575, its almost 1/3 of the price of some Production race guns & seems to come ready to shoot right out of the box - I especially like the new Scott Warren style fixed rear rights (using those on the 85 Combat now too & worth every penny). I understand that another 100 guns are headed to the US market as we speak & should be for sale for aforementioned $575 soon. Once you get it to the range, can you post a range report? Is it accurate? Reliable? How is the trigger? Regards, D.C. Johnson
  25. I do not record ES when I chrono; instead I look at standard deviation (SD) and for the load you are useing (3.2gr of N310 under a FMJ 147 @ 1.155") I get a SD of 6 for mixed brass and 5.2 for single brand brass. This was out of a Glock 17. I loaded the actual ammo that took 2nd place SSP at Winter Nationals match before last & the brass was Hirtenberger L7A2 once fired brass @ aforementioned SD of 5.2. Regards, D.C. Johnson
