  1. This past weekend I shot a classifier match using a production Glock 17. Running a little low on ammo I had to scrounge up a bunch of factory 9mm loads since I was both low on reloads and time. The first stage was not a classifier, but a run and gun ending with the Texas star. Usually an open shooter, I was looking forward to working through the stage with two reloads on this 25 round stage. Beep, off we go, first mag went flawlessly, onto the second mag and had a jam. The second round from the mag was stuck entering the chamber, rack the slide, dropped the mag, rack the slide, and still no joy. Finally the round popped out, and I finished the stage very disturbed by what happened with my old and very reliable Glock. Upon further review, that's what happens when you try to chamber a .40 caliber round in a 9mm. I'm just happy it wasn't the other way around...
  2. I proud as a new papa so I thought I'd share. Attached is a picture of my updated open gun family, the lower pistol is a older but extremely reliable .38 Super SV, Schuemann Hybrid barrel, shoots flatter than the salt flats. The top pistol is my current sweetheart , a Joey Hardy built 9mm Mongoose that has been very very good to me. Quick to draw, quick to index and it just helped me earn my M card. The center pistol is the updated one, previously a .38 Super Trubor Competitor, now a Rob Sheperd of Major Nyne Guns conversion to, you guessed it, 9mm. Rob fitted a Brazos Trubor Thundercomp SX barrel, added the slide racker, and replaced several parts that had seen better days. Of course this is my sons gun to shoot now... maybe... well we'll see.
  3. Most of the bays are gravel and packed dirt. You can various pictures and videos from this range in Jerry the Geek's Shooting Gallery.
  4. I have a True treadmill and it is fantastic. Quiet, reliable, and smooth. You can find more information about them at http://www.truefitness.com.
  5. We might be at the edge of the known universe but we got a whole lot of good shooting going on! Columbia Cascade Section
  6. +1 to what Paul said on Hoppes #9 to remove the 'fog'. After that windex or sunglasses cleaners work just fine.
  7. I still ask this of shooters between stages and when they ask me back I only focus on the positive. I have found when you talk about how good your day is going, even the most miserable shooter on the range can find something good to say about their shooting. It's contagious.

  9. Even some experienced shooter forget their options. Today a shooter fired three dead center hits on a pepper popper and it didn't fall, it was attached to a swinger which didn't activate so the shooter was prevented from completing the course of fire. The RO stopped him which was both appropriate and necessary, fixed the popper and granted the reshoot.
  10. Ghost Holster (yes the one with the pin) and CR Speed Mag Pouches.
  11. I had my first experience as match director today and had a lot of fun at it. I didn't think I would learn so much about matches as I did this morning. Anyway we were on the last stage, second to last shooter and I was the RO. I was a little tired, setup at 7am that morning which continued from 3pm the day before, lots of running around, etc. LAMR, shooter loads, gun on the table on the X, his hands on the table, ready to go. I held the timer out, just about to say are you ready, when the little voice in my head, you know the one, says "Something's not right". Look at the shooter, no problem there, look at the timer in my hand, I was ready to start him with my tapegun.
  12. Well the verdict is in, 119 round match, one stovepipe on the first stage (a speedshoot no less), on the 5th round in. After that it ran perfectly, I had several folks watch where the brass landed and it was consistent. Time to start looking at particular magazines though, 99.15% isn't good enough.
  13. I was reading this thread with great interest after last weekends match. On the classifier drew and starting firing on the right hand side. Stovepipe and then clang, steel falls by itself. Stop, etc. I'm thinking great, reshoot gods are smiling on me. On the reshoot, right side, reload, left side, stovepipe. Ugh, went to the back up gun. I put in a lighter recoil spring (8#), and began working on shaping the ejector so my brass would end up in a nice pile. Test fired at the range today, scope off, perfect little pile of brass 7 feet to my right. Scope on, brass went into the same place. Tommorow will be match day, we'll see how it holds up...
  14. Try this out http://www.greasecar.com/ One of my friends just hit 10,000 miles in his $300 VW Diesel rabbit, powered by the oil from our cafeteria at work. Of course he said it smells like french fries but he paid nothing for the used vegetable oil.
  15. I have two C-Mores and one OKO. I like OKO for its size and weight and I think the dot is slightly easier to aquire in the OKO. However I think the C-More is more robust and time tested. I've see the battery covers in friends OKO's let go and the switch actually wear out from being set to the same position. If you ever want to change to a different dot size with the OKO, you need to get a complete new sight whereas accessories are easier to come by for the C-More. My latest blaster has a C-More after shooting the OKO for 1.5 years and I am very happy with it. Norm
  16. Kattman, You might loosen the two allen screws and see if you can rotate the shell platform ever so slightly so the brass is better aligned with the sizing die. Mine had a little play in it and I held the shell holder tight in an anti-clockwise direction while I tightened the allen screws. Norm
  17. It wasn't noticeable that the shell platform was loose by pushing down on either side, however I did find it could rotate slightly in one direction or the other and that's what led me to the two allen screws. Norm
  18. I've had my XL650 for over two years now, primarly loading 38 super and .40 for IPSC. Over the last 1,000 rounds or so, I kept getting a crushed brass case at the sizing and de-priming station. This began to happen on a very regular basis and really slowed down my reloading speed. What was happening was that in about 1 out of 5 rounds, the edge of the case would catch the outside of the sizing die. Essentially the case was not centered as it entered the die and would often get crushed unless I stopped midstroke and aligned it. I thought I checked everything, the shell plate size, tension on the shell plate, etc. It was driving me crazy, getting progressively worse, and I read everything trying to find a solution. Well tonight I was loading for tomorrow's match and I found the problem. The two allen bolts under the shell plate that hold the shell platform down were loose! I aligned the shell platform and tighted down the allen bolts and every thing is silky smooth again. Just thought I'd pass this along in case others have the same problem. Norm
  19. Loves2Shoot is right on. Throw in a Speed Steel Match here and there to build your skills on steel and there is simply a lot of shooting to do in Portland area every weekend! Norm
  20. aXXman, The Douglas Ridge Rifle Club out near Boring is starting a training series of matches. There are several good folks out there that are very good instructors and are doing a great job getting these new matches going. Also be sure to check out the Columbia Cascade Section, you are welcome to join any of the upcomng matches at these clubs too! Norm
  21. We had a carbine match at my range one weekend and the only carbine I had was "FrankenMAC". A full auto M11/9 with a holotech sight on it. I was a little nervous to say the least, normally FrankenMAC is only used on full auto ranges or back in the woods. I loaded it up, checked the selector, safety on, Standby... Beep. Safety off, holotech on the upper A/B (only exposed target area) braaaaap. Geez that felt like two, squeeze again, braaap that WAS two!?!?!?! Looked at the selector while replaying MAC reassembly in my head from the past weekend there is no way it was on F/A, but it was. Sheepishly and profusely apologized to the RO, switch the selector back to where I thought it was in the first place, and finished the stage (with 4 upper a zone hits on the first target) and the rest of the match in semi.
