  1. What kind of long range stuff do you have in mind for this match? Any short speed shoots? Thanks George
  2. Brian and Jake, Thanks, your words of wisdom struck a cord. I tried the eyes closed drills for a few days last month and didn't see any progess. In fact maybe got worse. Now hearing that it's some thing that might not show improvement in days, made me relax. Being relaxed and spending a few minutes on this over the last two days, I've seen improvement. George
  3. I'm still trying to get a handle on how a team match works. On say on the first stage do I shoot the rifle stuff and then tag my team mate and and he shoots the shotgun part, then tags the 3rd guy who does the handgun stuff? Or do we all shoot the stage and and combine out score? One team member handles each stage? George
  4. Update: I swapped out the carrier and bolt and it ran real well. On closer inspection one of the bolts holding the gas key on was sheared off, but was held firmly by the stakeing. Thanks to everyone for your help. George
  5. There was a time I was running a shooter and he made a mag change and had his finger so far through the trigger guard I could see his first knuckle. He shot the last three targets. We did the whole "if you are finished...." Then I said "STOP" I then issued the DQ. So it's not too late to issue a DQ at the end of the course of fire. On the other hand, at one of the local steel matches I saw so many fingers on triggers during jams, reloads and unloading, I stopped shooting it for a while. George
  6. Nik, After I get this MultiQuote thing to work, I'll come back with a some kind of wise-guy remark. See you on the range George
  7. A lot of great ideas, thanks guys. Gas key looks and feels tight, the gas block looks straight, but kinda hard to check as my super smart alter ego put a 16 inch carbon fiber tube over the gas block. My ammo is loaded with 24.1 gn. of AA2230 with Wolf primers not Wolf ammo. Chronos at 2975 fps. with 55 gr Hornadys. The last time I shot this rifle it functioned just fine, locking back on an empty mag. Now it won't even move the next round at all. I'm going to try my spare bolt and carrier on Sunday, then if that is not the problem, attack the gas block then the gas tube. Thinking back to when I assembled this upper I think I made a mistake, and shaved the mushroom off the end of gas tube. I thought it was a manufacturing mistake. But it ran just fine until yesterday. Thanks for the help, I'll update you Sunday and see where to go from there. George
  8. Ok, I'll make that a new major goal in my dry fire routine. I know it won't be easy, in the past when trying to find my index and natural point of aim, it wasn't pretty. Rear sights higher then front sights, pointed off to the d zone at 10 feet. I couldn't come to rest on the a zone with my eyes closed unless I bladed my body with my strong side way back. Thanks George
  9. I have a fairly new upper on my rifle with about 250 rounds through it. It was working very well. But at the same time my Bushmaster two stage trigger was turning into a single stage trigger. I removed the hammer and greased the sear and hammer. The trigger seemed to be working fine now. In fact before I lubed it, it had a hard time setting off Wolf .233 primers, now that seems to be cured. Last time I shot the rifle it was 30 degrees out and today it was 65 degrees, I made no other changes other then lubing the sear and hammer. At the range I lubed it, changed mags twice( two of the mags were new, one was a known good working mag.) When that didn't fix it I took out the bolt alined the gas rings so that the openings were one third apart, cleaned and reassembled. still no joy. The rifle is a Bushmaster lower with a bushmaster two stage trigger, carbine length buffer tube, 20 barrel. What steps should I take to trouble shoot this? Thanks George
  10. I was able to get to the range today and set up my paper plate rack. I must not have a well developed index. I didn't feel a real need to move my feet. If I hadn't been following this topic, I would have indexed on the center of the plate rack and turned my center line to the plate I was drawing on. George
  11. Knowing your weaknesss is your strong point, in training, because then you will know what to work on. Good Luck George
  12. Lancer put a boatload of mags on the prize table for the 2009 Topton Pa. multi-gun match. Everyone I asked about them said they worked right out of the bag. Thank you Lancer! George
  13. That's pretty much how I plan to do it. But since the paper won't react, I think I'll use some brown cardboard for a backer, if nothing else, it will help me keep track of misses. George
  14. Wow, thanks! I may need time to try this as the range still has about 8 inches of winter on it. Thanks George
  15. I'll have to make a plate rack (paper plates on a long stick)anybody know how far apart and what size plates to use? George
  16. Brian, Why do you index differantly on 25 yard plate rack then you do on a 10 yard plate rack? Thanks George
  17. I thought I read somewhere that those dents are caused by to much lube.
  18. There once was a couple shooting steel challenge at my club. They were regulars but I didn't know them. One month, we were squadded together and I was running the timer. It turns out the wife was very hard of hearing. Sometimes you had to tap her shoulder to let her know when to start. But she was very dependent on hearing the steel ring to know when to move on to the next target. Sometimes she would stop and ask if she hit the plate. So after her third stage of each run being 20 or more seconds, I told her just to shoot, not listen for the hits and move to the next plate. By the end of that stage she had a couple runs in the 5 or 6 second range. She had cut her time down to one forth of her previous average. It was remarkable. She was so excited, she ran over to her husband and told him by not listening to her hits on steel she went much faster. He called her something bad and me a jerk and not to take advice from anyone. I didn't RO her after that but she went back to listening for her hits and she was even slower then before. It was very sad. George
  19. I will be switching from irons to Tac Optics simply because that's what most people are running. How will I ever ever know if I'm getting better if I'm one of 3 guys shooting limited, or should I join the pack of 70 shooting Tac Optics. This weekend my club is having it multi-gun match, I think I may shoot irons in Tac Optics division, just to see how I do. George
  20. My first 4 lb. jug of clays was gray and the second had the green tint. I called Hogdon and spoke to a tech. He assured me it was just fine. He was very knowledgeable about loading Clays in .40 cal. We had a good chat. he was very helpful. If you still have any doubt, call them, the number is on the jug. George
  21. Thanks Outerlimits, I understand now. I did notice that yesterday when playing around with the scope, but I didn't realize how important it could be. Thanks Jadeslade, The parts for my new upper won't be here for another 3 months, but I'll try to remember to post something here when I get it together. In the mean time I need to learn more scope stuff and work on reducing my 4 inch @100 yard groups Thanks all
  22. I'm sorry, I don't know what that means. Am I going to have to know one set of zeros for low, med and high magnafication?
  23. I've only shot irons up till now, but I will soon be adding a Millett DSM 1x4 to my new upper. At my home range we only have 100 yard rifle range so all my practice will be 0 to 100 yards. Should I zero the scope with it set at 2x and then see how much it changes zero when set to 0x and then 4x? Thanks, George
  24. Nik, Congratulations! I know you worked real hard and sacrificed a lot to achieve this goal. Please do not squash me like a bug, if I happen to make a joke about short white dresses and nurse caps. George Ps For those of you who have never met Nik in person, he is a big manly man.
  25. Higher round count, less money, more fun, and maybe prizes too? I'm in it, to win it. Thanks in advance to Topton, Dean and his Crew! George
