  1. The VersaMax Tactical is a great shotgun.... I have one. I sent it to Mark P at Carbon Arms to open up the loading port, weld up the lifter gate and install the one piece mag tube extension..... all three of those things are really necessary if you are going to be competitive in 3Gun..... the first two are to maximize your shotgun loads...which will drive most of your time in 3Gun....the mag tube is really necessary to make your slug shots consistent. When it comes to the gas system....it looks like a Benelli M4 Argo set up and it runs just as well....I tried to make it fail and just could not do it.....Remington hit one out of the park on this gun! I have shot Benellis and the SLP and I have to say the VersaMax is simply a better gun..... reliability is king in 3Gun and if it goes bang every time..... you have a winner.
  2. Agree to a point.... if you plan on going to some of the larger matches.... you will shoot at flashers and LaRues/MGM self resetting targets at longer ranges..... the 3GN matches had targets out to 550 and 600....those get hard without a BDC reticle....
  3. Thanks....I have hear great things about the Razor 1-6 and would like to play with one before I make my next purchase.... the weight is the only concern I have....but it may be nothing once I play with it.
  4. The glass is clear and the reticle is really good for 7.62...the .5 moa aimpoint is very precise and the intermediate lines help a lot for targets that are not right at a specific yardage.... e.g. 435 is easier to engage with the line between the 400 and 500 stadia.... the scope is also short, light and rugged....well worth the price if you as me!
  5. What type of shooting are you doing? If it is 3Gun....most of your targets will not be obscured by the reticle but I do see how achieving a precise zero will be more difficult. My son's ACOG always had this problem.... we solved it by moving to a CMR reticle that has a .5 MOA dot which will provide a much more precise aimpoint for zeroing or shooting at smaller targets.
  6. Pat is definitely the guy you want to take HM advice from....even though he has been shooting the mouse guns this year....he really is THE guy when it comes to HM.... and an all around great and knowledgable guy.
  7. The new Mark 6 is a great scope.... I have heard great things about the new Vortex Razor Gen II but it is a lot heavier than the Mark 6... if 3Gun is you purpose you will love the Mark 6 because it is light, clear, great reticle and fast....all the things you need in a competitive 3Gun scope.
  8. The VIPER PST is a good scope but I think you will get great results from a 1.5-5 Mark 4 as well.... with the new Mark 6 and VX-VI 3Gun out on the street....picking up a good used Mark 4 will provide more scope for the money and still stay within your budget. The reticle works really well for 3Gun. just my two cents worth
  9. The LaRue mount is what I chose for my LRP-07 and I can't be happier. I use them because I run a 1-6 and Aimpoint Micro for 3Gun and tactical training classes and a 6.5-20 Mark 4 for long range shooting....all in LaRue mounts.... zero them once and you can swap back and forth without having to re-zero....it turns your LRP-07 into a very versatile high performance gun that can be used in very different shooting styles by simply swapping the optic and ammo....
  10. You are going to love that upper. The new JP silent capture spring/buffer system is a great companion to the LM carrier group...and will work well with any other upper you have.... I would recommend you take a look at that as well.
  11. My son has shot his 18" CTR-02 with the heat sink for the past three years. He has had great success with his gun. The heat sink does help....it isn't specifically to keep the hand guard cool it is to help the barrel shed heat to help keep the POI consistent. Over the years...the rifle has shot very consistently regardless of how many rounds there were per stage. I have had light contour barrels in the past than did have a noticeable shift in POI after heavy strings of rapid fire.... it may never be a problem for you but it certainly has not hurt my son's long range or rapid fire performance.
  12. I might have missed it but has anyone tried this scope out side by side with the new Mark 6? I would be interested in any feedback. I know they are in two different price points but I follow the buy once cry once policy now (scar tissue from buying things over and over again in the past).
  13. For a 3Gun scope...the magnification seems good but I just dont know how you can get away with that reticle if you are serious about 3Gun..... if you go to a lot of matches especially across the 3Gun Nation circuit.... you really need a BDC reticle to be competitive.... a 10" flasher at 423 yards across a valley in TX is not an easy target to hit....even with a BDC reticle....without it.... you better be really good or it would be a very difficult shot. For the money I would rather have a Leu VX-VI 3Gun. As for the glass.... Swaro quality???? I would have to see that to believe it.
  14. I use two different mags for my JP LRP-07.... First I only use the PMAGs for my 20 round mags. I have shot well over 6000 rounds through my JP and I have yet to have a single problem with any of my PMAGs. I cant imagine using anything else ever. They are perfectly reliable and I have used and abused them and they just keep working. Second, if you ever want a high cap mag for your LRP....I have been using the XS 50 round drum (mostly to just work rapid fire drills) and it has been absolutely great! It is really well balanced and fun to shoot. Here is a link if you are interested http://www.xs-products.com/x-25-308-caliber-drum-magazine
  15. jr. 3 gunner Jake here.... the JP trigger is a great trigger group (yes I am a JP shooter) and I use it in all of my rifles. I also like the LaRue mounts (not sponsored by them) and use them on all of my rifles as well. As a junior 3Gunner as well, I would suggest that you go for reliability first...and the JP trigger and LaRue mount will give you that. It looks like you are putting together a great gun and you should have a lot of fun shooting 3Gun. I would suggest that you think about a JP adjustable gas block as well.... I am not pushing the JP equipment but I also dont know what size gas port your barrel has. A lot of the barrels out there have enlarged gas ports to help run cheap ammo....if yours does as well....then you will be adding a lot of unnecessary recoil....the adjustable gas block will allow you to turn down the gas level and make the gun reliable and soft shooting at the same time.....it will make a difference in your ability to recover from recoil and will help your scores. Good luck out there.... hope to see you at a match.
  16. My son shoots a CTR-02 and we have tried a bunch of different mounts....in my opinion, the LaRue Tactical LT104 is just about the best you can do. You will have plenty of adjustment to obtain the proper eye relief and the scope can be removed and replaced with no loss of zero. We have gone to the LaRue mounts exclusively on all of our long guns now ..... and we ARE NOT sponsored by them....the mounts just work that well. The mounts have held up to years of abuse and I have yet to have a single complaint or have a single rifle loose zero. This is especially helpful when you have several different optics for the same rifle and you can swap the optics back and forth without having to go back to the range and re-zero. Here is a link if you are interested. http://www.laruetactical.com/larue-tactical-spr-m4-scope-mount-qd-lt-104
  17. This may be an entirely different point of view but....I have found that the "cheapest" mags are the Wilson Combat or the Chip McCormick mags....they cost more but when you go to a match and the less expensive mags jam....you match goes down the tubes and all of the cost that goes into practice and getting to the match goes right down with it....so the more expensive but perfectly reliable mags seem to cost me much less in the long run. If you are betting your life on the mags....it becomes even more important. Just my two cents worth.
  18. My dad and I put the new JP silent capture spring set up in my CTR-02 and it made a noticeable difference. My gun used to have a slight "rowing type" motion to the recoil impulse under rapid fire but the new set up now shoots flatter and has a softer feeling recoil impulse. I am glad we made the upgrade.
  19. They may be a bit big but how about CDs..... you can get an entire container of them for real cheap now.... hang it by the hole in the middle and they should work great. They will break on anything that hits them.
  20. Jesse, How about shoot off side matches that you can pay a small fee to get into the bracket.... then we all could get an opportunity to experience a shoot off.....
  21. Phong, We have the MGM 4" plates.... we shoot pistol, rifle and shotgun at them. They are a great value for what you get.... the only problem is chasing them after hitting them with a .308 ;-}
  22. Love the show, the website and the entire idea of the 3Gun Nation Tour! 3Gun Nation is taking the sport to an whole new level. It is a driving force to bring more people into the sport.....the publicity, shoot off format and the prize money will keep it growing.
  23. 1 - Zip lines! 2 - Cool stage guns (at the beginning of the stage) like mini guns (and other automatic weapons) and grenade launchers....stuff you would normally not get to shoot 3- Just about everything AMU does.... armored vehicles, trench lines, sniper towers, shoot houses etc. 4- All slug stages 5 - All 3 guns in most stages If you are going to travel, spend a lot of money to shoot and take the time off.... let's have some fun! ***Oh yeah, shooting with juniors and super seniors..... getting razzed about being smoked by a 15 year old and a 67 year old..... great fun!
  24. 1- Unreliable stage guns at the end of a stage.... especially when you have to fly to a match and you only brought enough ammo to shoot the match and do the usual make up shots..... having to shoot a stage two or three times really kills your ammo management! Please put those guns at the beginning of the stage so it is the match's ammo we are shooting over and over again. Thanks! 2- Stages that take a long time to score and reset (especially when you are in rough terrain).... it is usually the stage that backs the entire match up. 3 - Stages that are dropped from the match after you rocked it. 4- 0730 first stages.... especially when the time zone is working against you 5- Rain - precipitation should be unauthorized during a scheduled match!
