  1. Perhaps it is my web browser not properly loading the pages, but do they have prices listed on their website? I cannot seem to find any. Thanks.
  2. I went to a Dawson 0.170 plain black about a month ago and have been EXTREMELY pleased with the results. POI is still a little below POA @10yds in, but quite managable. One note if you do decide to swap out the sights; some of the front sights are in there REALLy tight and nearly take a press to knock them out. Whomever does the work might be ahead to just cut the FS out if it doesn't budge easily.
  3. My 18" JP absolutely LOVES this exact load under a Nosler 69 gr HPBT. The nice thing about W748 is that you can find it in nearly every gunshop.
  4. M&P9L in USPSA Production and outlaw 3gun. I also have an XDM 9mm I'm turning into a USPSA Limited Minor and outlaw 3 gun pistol with magwell and mag extensions.
  5. http://www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=185213 I went this route instead of a Daves MW due to time constraints this season. Even with the larger button on the bottom it is still very challenging to do weak hand loading (for me anyway ). Hope that helps.
  6. There is a lot of good advice here and sorting through all of it is going to be a challenge. I started USPSA and 3gun this year as well. Fortunately I already had a Rem 1100 and Colt AR15 to use so I only had to decide on a pistol. Although the 1911 is an excellent platform it does have some minor limitations in the 3gun game as others have mentioned (mag capacity, larger recoil impulse) however that doesn't mean you need to buy a new pistol just to shoot 3gun. If you are comfortable with these minor limitations shoot the gun you already own in SS and 3gun. This early in it's more the person pulling the trigger than the pistol so get as much trigger time with one pistol as you can. If you do decide to go the new pistol route Glock, M&P, and XDM's in 9mm are all excellent choices for both 3gun and USPSA Production division. They will also work for Limited Minor as well by adding mag extensions and a magwell, which coincidentally is also an excellent way to set up these pistols for 3gun to take full advantage of their double stack capacity. I own both the M&P and XDM platforms and would recommend either one. My current preference is the M&P mainly because it has the better trigger(Apex Parts). I just haven't gotten around to sending off the XDM for trigger work (Canyon Creek) although it is my intention to set up (magwell and mag extensions)and shoot the XDM primarily for 3gun next year. Good luck and don't get too overwhelmed by the information and equipment overload that is 3gun.
  7. Are you willing to add local monthly matches? If so: Durham Rifle & Pistol Club(Raleigh/Durham) 2nd Saturday March-Dec 2011 and Drakes Landing(Raleigh/Durham) 3rd Saturday Feb-Dec 2011 Thanks in advance!
  8. A slightly more complex solution is to utilize a two ammo system. I use 55gr FMJ 0-100yds and 69gr for 100+yds. The 55gr FMJ is ~3000FPS. The scope is zeroed for 200yds with my 69gr Nosler HPBT @ ~2750fps. My BDC dots are 250yds, 350yds, 425yds, and 500yds. By mainly dumb luck and a little bit of design the 55gr loads are POI = POA to +1.75 inches from 25-75yds so I can hold on or use a 6 o'clock hold on a vast majority of targets. Ultimately though as stated you do need to do some range work to determine what your rifle does with your ammo at varying distances. A good online ballistics calculator I've found is http://www.vortexoptics.com/content/lrbc I hope that helps more than it confuses.
  9. Charles that is excellent advice thank you! I double checked my loads ballistic drop table and the last two remaining dots in my BDC reticule happen to correspond exactly to 425yds and 500yds respectively. Hopefully I will be good to go.
  10. Thanks for the feedback guys! I've got my rifle load, BDC reticule and holds worked out to 350yds. The issue is I live in suburbia now and my range estimation skills over open ground have gone to pot. Glad to know that I won't have to be totally guestimating ranges as I travel to Fort Benning and Blue ridge in the coming months. Out of curiosity do they typically also tell you the size of the steel at given ranges? I know locally matches typically use 4" at 100, 6" at 200, and 10" 300yds. Some places will use 4" out to 200yds and some clubs have some 8" steel they throw into the mix. I recall a thread awhile back about how long range steel should preferably be 4MOA. Thanks again for the info.
  11. Having watched videos from several of the natural terrain matches on Youtube and also the 3Gun Nation TV show I was wondering how competitors determine the various distances on the longer range steel targets? Locally our long range stages are shot on tiered or sectioned ranges so guestimating a distance isn't too much of an issue or the RO's will tell us what the distances are. How does it typically work at the national level matches? Are the distances known/published or are competitors allowed to use a rangefinder during the walkthrough to distance in a target? Thanks in advance.
  12. This mornings show was the second half of the SMM3G. I'd imagine it might be another 2-4 weeks before the Vegas match airs. It takes a little while to edit a show together.
  13. JP15/VTAC would make a great Tactical Rifle. Has everything you would need. JP has many different options in trigger "weights". A heavier trigger seems to be one item of consensus which has been covered extensively in this discussion. Jay One other minor aspect to remember with the JP15 is that you would need to change out the low mass bolt (LMB) for a standard bolt carrier since the LMB does not have the grooves for the forward assist. I found this out the hard way in the middle of a CoF. Take a look over the spec sheets that 1911vm added. The JP VTAC has a tactical operating system, not a low mass. This rifle is JP's TACTICAL WORK GUN. Jay Of course the JPVTAC has a standard bolt. I stated that the JP15 has a LMB. Two very similar, but different models.

  15. To get back to the original question I run a Vortex Viper 2.5x-7x with BDC reticle and a JP short range sight at 1 o'clock on the handguard. I utilize a two ammo system for 3 gun: 55gr FMJ 100yds and in and 69gr 100+yds. The JP-SRS is zeroed POA = POI at 25yds with 55gr FMJ 2 ~3000FPS. The scope is zeroed for 200yds with my 69gr Nosler HPBT @ ~2750fps. MY first two BDC dots are 250yds and 350yds. By dumb luck the 55gr loads are POI = POA to +1.75 inches from 25-75yds. I mainly use the JP-SRS for 25yd and in full size "hoser" targets. Everything else within 100yds I use the scope at 2.5x.
  16. Anybody catch today's episode on the RM3G? It was a "slam bam thank you mam" lets get this match in our rear view episode! What happened to the 2 episode per match format that has worked so well the entire year? The whole pacing of the episode just felt rushed. Am I missing something here?
  17. 0.180 (see post #55 for additional info)
  18. Before going over to the Dark Side of Tac Op's I was running the 0.52 bead sight from KNS on a 20in Colt HBar. IIRC it basically covered a 2 or 3 MOA target at 100yds. I believe that correlates with your observations as well, IPSC target is 18in wide? I tried the 0.34 bead sight, but couldn't get a decent focus on sight and target. Granted I didn't experiement too much with the irons because after two local matches with targets in the 200-300yd range with limited white paint and no backers I went Tac Ops and haven't looked back....yet I think there is still enough of my soul left to come back from Tac Ops....next year
  19. I'm a DIY type and have previously done my own sight installation for my Glock and Sig. I couldn't budge the FS with the biggest hammer I had, and my gunsmith BARELY got it out. I'd error on the side of caution and get a gunsmith to do the installation.
  20. I thought I'd give an update on my experiment. First, my gunsmith had a dilly of a time removing the factory installed sight. I had the Dawson 0.170 front sight installed and it has moved the POI up a little relative to the POA (~0.5in at 10 yds). I have not had a chance to shoot it from the bench at 25 or 50 yds yet to see how it is shooting at those distances. I'll have the opportunity to do some match testing this weeekend, but in practice I was much happier with my groups being higher on the target. I may end filing the sight down a little to move POI up farther. Dawson does make a 0.160, but I was afraid that may be shooting way too high at 25 and 50 yds. Also for reference I'm shooting factory loaded Amercan Eagle 124gr.
  21. Saw this on firearm blog this week, the new Remington Vera Max http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2010/08/05/remingtons-new-vera-max-shotgun-and-versaport-gas-system/ Glad to know Perry wasn't pulling my leg for the fun of it! Hopefully there will be a 22" or 24" model in my future around Xmas 2011 or early Spring 2012.
  22. I have JP fire control units (trigger, springs and speed hammer) in both of my AR's and am extremely pleased with them. My gunsmith set them to break a little shy of 3lbs and the reset is miniscule. A good friend has a Chip McCormick drop in assembly in his AR that is also very nice to shoot especially for long range work. I don't think between JP, McCormick, or Geissele you are going to find a "bad trigger". You however might find one that best suits your budget and gunsmithing abilities. JP also now has a drop in unit as well: http://www.jprifles.com/1.4.8.1_ezt.php Hope that helps.
  23. It does look promising! I had heard about this shotgun from one of my local gunstore owners who got to shoot it at an industry event. He was extremely impressed not only that it could handle all types of loads, but also with the recoil reduction. A $1400 MSP is indeed a bit steep, but well may be worth it if the gun pans out as promised. I doubt I will get one for 2011, but by 2012 a 22" or 24" model should be readily available. Thanks for the link to the info also. EDIT: I found this informative YouTube video about the VERSA-max
  24. Yes, just like you can put the mag release from the G34 in a G17. You must install one that matched the factory extended mag release profile (like ours.) I believe Springer Precision makes one that is Production legal, since it has the same profile as the factory one. The same question was asked and answered recently in the "XDM 9mm what changes to make" thread. I'm assuming that the mag release is identical for the XD and XDM. I can't recall all the parts they share in common. Hope that helps. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=82954&view=findpost&p=1263605 http://www.springerprecision.com/
